The XPS series is under the gaming tag, and they claim right on the front page of the Dell.com site that, "We take your gaming experience as seriously as you do." The next line: "XPS show just how serious we are" is more telling. If the Dimension XPS400 is any indication, Dell considers computer gamers a joke. Harsh, yes. But we think it's accurate. ~~~~

    ~~~~~ f you've read our [H] Consumer evaluation of Dell's XPS 400, you'll remember that "value-added" software got in the way of our everyday use of the machine. Well, I've recently been made aware of a third party's attempt to remedy this situation for those of you that may not want to mess around with uninstalling unnecessary software yourself, or would rather have an unattended way of completing the job. It's a sad state of affairs when you buy a new computer these days and it comes pre-loaded with a ton of garbage software that brings your new machine to a crawl. If anyone's bought a Dell PC in the last few years, you probably know what I'm talking about. ~~~

    linking to stories on Salon.com with their force history channel ad to read the story is also a problem.

    I have generally been able to reuse my old computer stuff...as I upgrade my main pc i move old computers to new tasks...(my old PC is now the Domain Controller for my home network) my 2nd oldest PC is now my media server....etc.

    additonally this or that parts I no longer needed have been given/sold to other people for reuse.

    I did have a really old computer that i really had no valid use for...I took it to a recycling facility (along with some dead items broken monitor/printers..etc..) I guess hopefully they are more ethical than some of the companies in the story.

    yeah... I don't know, usually when i'm travelling and i'm trying to get online i'm trying to connect to my VPN, or check my email...etc..not trying to look up what the capital of Georga is?.. plus how many people have a spare 80GB's on their laptop?????? (NOT ME)

    plus i don't know where they are staying but the hotels we use have free HS Internet in the rooms?

    I don't have **knocks on wood** problems with mal / spyware.

    I have a m0n0wall Perimeter firewall.... w/ the windows boxes behind this..... the perimeter firewall is your first and one of the best ways to keep the windows boxen protected.
    i have spywareware blaster installed and updated on all the windows machines, in addition to current updated antivirus (F-secure) or (AVG). blah blah blah m$ antispy, and spybotsearch and destroy.

    for the computers using wifi i have VPN over wifi using monowalls VPN capabilities in conjuction with RADIUS authentification from my domain controller.

    I don't use IE, Firefox is used as the browswer on all the computers

    hmmm let see what else.. software firewalls on each pc kerio or sygatePF

    and of course brain power not clicking on stupid things not opening strange email attachments.

    It is a little bit of work setting everything up, monitoring, updating...etc. but it is alot easier to keep this crapola off your pc's then deal with the aftermath.

    I just had to help my dad and a couple other relatives work out some malware issues.... and really honestly after looking at the situations... the reformat options really seemed like the best... I certainly could have spent the time, running this and that malware scan and/or some online scanners then looking at hijackthis logs and maybe if i was really lucky more time digging about with something like system internals process explorer....

    but really it seemed much more Expedient to backup their documents and just start over....and at least i could be sure that all the nasty crap was gone when i was done also.

    however really the best option is keeping the junk off the network to begin with if at all possible.

    all this bandwidth may windup being moot if the people that want to end network Neutrality and or switch to bandwidth used pricing models have their way.

    why is it people in korea have like 20000000000Mbs connections for $10 a month (ok maybe i exaggerated slightly)

    and in the US we will be lucky to keep only paying $50 a month of 3.0Mbs connections.

    We in the US are getting Screwed on data pricing and speed.

    I actually do commute via bicycle frequently... i also use the train to get to work regularly...

    the car my g/f and i have is fuel efficent~ish (we're looking at getting a hybrid.... we use energy saving light bulbs and appliances in our house...

    in short ..... step the fuck off, I'm doing pretty much as much as i reasonably can to reduce my energy consumption.

    as i'm reading this they are saying the storms now are 50% worse than the storms in 1950 (which should have been the high point of storm activity based on natural cycle)... and that the natural cycle would point to natural warming for next 20~years........

    I'm honestly starting to wonder if humanity even has time left to get our stuff together or if we've already taken things to far, with our climate impacting activities.

    I was reading the other day about artic wild life...seals ..etc that were moving further north.. leaving local indiginous people that had lived in the areas affected for well..... a LONG ASS TIME. for the first time w/out the food recourses to survive as they have for centuries...

    human caused global warming is close enough to completely proved for me.
