    Those were the exact same reasons I predicted Windows CE devices would never take off all those years ago.

    I find the workflow of Office and its clones stifling, unnatural and outdated.

    Give Ragtime a try (Ragtime Download). It's marketed as a publishing tool, but if you're interested in a different take on office suites, it might do the job for you. There's a free version for non-commercial users.

    Well, there's no doubt the figures are fudged, but the reality is that in some areas, Australia is in the middle of a labour shortage.

    The unemployment rate is high enough in Australia that all of these can be satisfied at the same time.

    I'm not sure which Australia you're living in, but my Australia has a 28 year record low unemployment level.

    It is not against the law for a company to "loan" politicians expensive toys (ie, large plasma screens). It is not against the law for a political party to accept money from a company. It is not against the law for a politician to accept a sinecure when they leave politics.

    The AU govenment (of either party) has shown it is more than willing to institutionalise corruption.

    The governments (US and AU) do not want to win. They do not want to use OSS. They want to keep funneling money from me, you, and every other citizen of the 52 states into the coffers of their friends and supporters.

    There will be isolated areas where IT departments or individuals with a clue buck this trend, but the bulk of policymakers will always endeavor to support the deep pockets of those who finance their campaigns and employ them when they leave politics.

    They will do this to ensure the pockets remain deep.

    Weed won't kill you, it'll just make you stupid as hell and because of the nature of nerve cells, unless there are some major advances in science, you can't reverse the effects of weed.

    Nicotine does mess with your brain, and is an addictive chemical. On the other hand, THC works by affecting serotonin levels, not by killing brain cells. The effects will wear off as soon as levels return to normal.

    The Australian government has also tapped journalists phones and used the conversations for political advantage during the Tampa "crisis". They played the terrorism card yet again to make it legal for authorities to covertly view digital communications (email, VOIP, text messages etc) without a warrant.

    I noticed that comparison between web browsers is missing all 3 of the browsers for Amiga: IBrowse, Aweb, and... I forget..

    For slightly large values of 3, Voyager, AMosaic, Chimera?, Amiga Lynx, and (at a stretch) Emacs W3 mode

    Thing is, Firefox defaults to the Firefox website!

    Not only that, but the default page on the Firefox site has a Google search field right in the middle. Most of the people I know (including IE users) have set Google as their start page. With Firefox, there's no reason to change. Smart.

    Yeah, afraid so. Cheer up though, programmers who can apt-get gcc will be fine. It's probably best to think of it as evolution in action. Those capable of apt-getting to a new environment will survive to pass on their memes. Others; well sadly...
