    Do you remember the Internet before advertising? I do. It was mostly educational, and technical. It was also low bandwidth. The modern Internet is a lot of expensive to produce and deliver content. That money has to come from somewhere, and Universities are not financing it all like they used to.

    Use adblock, it gets rid of ALL the adds on youtube. And if it's not your device, just hit F5 and you should get something else.

    The amusing part is that youtube know this and has not "fixed" it. I guess they realize we are not a receptive market for that crap.

    Then you have something broken as well. I use adblock and never see the intro ads. And it looks the same since I am always surprised when they play on another computer.

    Updates are scheduled in if they are needed.

    They are always needed. Sometimes eventually, sometimes quickly, and sometimes right fucking now. But you can never just be OK with old versions for long.

    So it's like Windows?

    In the sense that both are made by man and imperfect, yes. In the sense that patches come rapidly, no.

    Which has nothing to do with a dome, and everything to do with Dubai... The reaction to the dome is unfounded panic. Dubai will separate the people because Dubai separates the people. Dome, or no dome.

    Look at the price for a nice watch today, like a Tag or Longines, not to mention Rolex. And my Tag has been worn daily for 14 years and still looks good. Why would I replace it for cheap looking trash? But why would I invest in something that can not last?

    This is dead on. I have a rather nice and somewhat expensive watch. Yes, it is nice to be able to check the time riding my motorcycle, or to know how long I have been scuba diving. And yes the new watches can do that. But I have had my watch for 14 years, and it is still a nice and stylish piece of jewelry. I also have a very nice watch I inherited that is significantly older. Performs a time keeping function, but is mostly jewelry. But I would have a hard time investing a few grand in a watch that would be obsolete in 2 years, and would need a new battery (or charging) every night. So for me, the answer is "It ain't happening."

    Surveillance is only the tool. How it is used (abused) is the key. For example, a camera in the break-room kills good will. Pointedly saying we will be monitoring, but not the break-room increases good will.

    Mostly from experience. I have worked in a few third world places, and in Africa for 6 months. And older, solidly built tech was preferred. Even in the "rich" companies, solid and proven technology was a benefit.

    For stuff they can't use, we ought to keep it and recycle it expensively, rather than shipping it there and have them die young of heavy metal exposure recycling it cheaply.

    I understand your sentiment, but think how it feels to be told by the first world "You can not have this stuff that you want because you can not use it responsibly." Talk about arrogance!

    These TVs are waste because they are not digital, the countries they are going to are probably a long way from going digital.

    CRTs also hold up to the elements much better, and some places do not have 24hr AC. Or any AC. (Air conditioning, not power)

    My current main television is about 10 years old, and I bought it used two years ago to replace another that was 14 years old and needed an expensive repair.

    You are not the "norm". For the majority of consumers 2 years old is obsolete.

    For the majority of consumers in the first world. If you ever traveled more than 10 miles from your house you might find that other people live differently than you do. A 10 year old TV in some communities in India is a luxury!
