    I think the power of XBMC isn't in the default installation. It's in the streaming add-ons that are available.

    I've got one installed called freecable. It lets me stream from any TV episode that's available on basically any TV show's website. ie: The official CBS website will stream episodes of CSI. On XBMC, I just go to Free Cable -> CBS -> CSI -> Full Episodes. My wife and I are seriously thinking of getting rid of our cable subscription completely. Haven't watched anything that wasn't streamed through XBMC in several months.

    With XBMC v10, add-ons are easy to install and update, via repositories. v10 add-ons (and repositories) seem to be compatible with v11, so there's a lot out there already.

    It's still a streaming service. Can't put it on a laptop for a trip.

    I'm leaving the country in a couple weeks. Taking my laptop and a couple hundred movies on it. I'm not going to watch much, but at least I'll have a nice selection to watch from.

    Agree 100%.

    I am currently in the process of ripping my DVD collection on a 3 year old computer. Every day when I get up I take 2 DVDs out of the computer and put in the next 2 DVDs. When I get home I take them out and put in another 2 DVDs. Wake up the next morning and the process continues.

    Been doing this for over 6 months, and just now making a dent in my DVD collection. Slowed down my DVD purchases while I'm doing this, BTW.

    P.S. : Thank God I didn't buy Blurays. I couldn't just put those in the system and just come back a few hours later. Too much hand-holding, according to where I read. Anyone know differently?

    Or even better:

    Someone can take the edits and make a script out of them.

    Then others can run the script, insert the necessary DVDs, and create their own copies.

    Potentially it can be posted on a website and not even break any copyrights.

    I'm wondering what sort of hospital this was.

    Is it the local equivalent of the best in breed hospital, or it just some local hospital where the surgeon ran amok and no protocols were followed?

    There's apparently demos of Raspberry PIs running XBMC. However, it really depends on the codec the video uses. They've only liscenced a few codecs. Raspbmc (http://www.raspbmc.com/) is a distro that may be of interest once these devices are in people's hands.

    Here's what I want:

    Someone to bundle an Acer Aspire Revo 3700 with an appropriate IR receiver and remote (ie: Noah Company MediaGate GP-IR02BK Windows Vista Home Premium and Windows Vista Ultimate MCE Remote Control).

    Load it up with OpenElec and a couple of the standard repositories (bluecop, etc.).

    And just sell that as a media center.

    I did it myself, but it took some trial and error to get the right stuff together. But now that I have it's it's easy to duplicate for the family.

    I donated for the first time when the whole SOPA thing was the pressing matter. I'll probably donate again today.

    The EFF matters. Their core beliefs match mine more so than most of the places I donate to.

    I'm a geek, and they do good for geeks. That's good enough for me.

    I would definitely use this. I drive the same route every day. I still put it in my GPS. I like knowing when I'm going to get there, and how many miles I have left to go. Also, sometimes the GPS will tell me there's an accident along my route and try to route me around it. While I never use the alternate route, at least I know that there's a slow down and mentally prepare for it.

    The added benefit of potentially improving traffic flow (for those around me, if not for myself) is a no-brainer.

    The nice thing about VLC on Windows is that it can be a least common denominator.

    I want to give a friend a video to watch. I don't have to research what codecs and container formats it was using, and what my friend has installed on the computer. I just add the VLC installer on the disc and tell him to use that if their default player doesn't handle the video.

    I think SCO's original plan was a buyout from IBM.

    But it's better for IBM's reputation to burn SCO to the ground, salt the earth, and put up a plaque describing the events for anyone who would ever fuck with them in the future.

    IBM wins the game. The money is worth it to them. It buys them a reputation that no other use of the money can come close to.

    No one will play this game against IBM again.

    Forever is a long time.

    You may think a couple million years is a long time, but it's nothing compared to forever.

    I think that I would go mad with the possibility of living forever.

    To see everyone and everything I cared about die, and then just evaporate away, as all matter must do.

    To survive the heat death of the universe.

    To be so completely alone and live with just memories.

    Sounds like a curse that I wouldn't put on anyone.

    Interesting.

    I've run Ubuntu since 5.04.

    I stopped updating with 11.04 (Or was it 10.10?). I can't handle Unity and not interested in learning it.

    Next time I upgrade it's going to be Mint or (maybe) Debian. Debian scares me a little, so probably Mint.

    Of course it matters. Just like it matters when OS X does something better than Linux.

    It's not a zero-sum game. One OS doing something in a better way allows the other ones to copy that better way, making the world a better place for all.

    At least in a reality without design patents, of course. ;-)

    I'm surprised if someone hasn't patented this already. It's sure obvious enough:

    0. Download an app with the current 4G hot spots in the country
    1. Use GPS/map to remember 4G hot spots.
    2. Use 3G triangulation (which is always available) to see if you're near a 4G hot spot.
    3. If you're near a 4G hot spot, look for 4G.
    4. Once a day search for 4G.

    This idea is better:

    Have the computer figure out if you're talking based on the video feed (facial recognition). If so, activate the microphone and figure out if you're issuing a command to the computer. This will prevent random noises in the background issuing commands to the computer. Bonus points for developing a voice fingerprint to assist in the future if you're issuing commands.

    Best part: This will work with any laptop or desktop with a video cam pointed at the user.

    (So, if this isn't patented already, let's call this obvious and not let anyone patent it. :-) )

    You don't need to make a call. That's what signing a medical release is for: You go to the new doctor's office BEFORE your visit, sign a release, and the secretary there calls up anywhere you say you've been treated in the past and get all the records.

    No muss, no fuss. No embarrassment of making calls yourself.
