OK, just wanted to use my philosophy words- but in any event- the argument for the bamboo bicycle relies upoin the argument that it is more sustainable, which in relationship to bicycles is true, but, and this is a major but, the reality is that the unsustainability issues we face as a planet today come more from cars and industrialization, not so much from bikes. If bikes were the major form of transportation for the US (the most horribly unsustainable country in the world today) then this would be a major news piece, but its not. The answer is for more people to get bikes of steel, aluminum, carbon, hell even ti and worry about the sustainability of bikes after cars are on the downtrend (not that this will ever happen it seems)
The point of having that quality is that you archive in it knowing that there are better formats to come. Also not all of us listen at 16/44.1 (the resolution of a CD) at home. I listen at 24/96 and 24/192 at home:-) Sounds WAY cooler and deeper.
Well both allow for a digi in which renders the pre needless. Its a progression but for the same money I can have a laptop and a motu or a multiset or even one of the emagic convertors and have a much better piece of gear.
I'll tell you why not MD for recording. ATRAC compression sounds HORRIBLE. Also you need a good mic pre & a/d convertor none of which MD has. MD is greatly frowned upon by the recording industry. It is a purely low grade consumer media.
Ok, there are some problems with both of these units. I've been following their production from the get-go as I work within the audio industry. First off every single thing core sound has made in the past is CRAP. Poorly made, known to occasionally damage audio gear and so on. Look at their sony 7 pin cables. They are horrible. On top of this these units arent ready for their intended purposes. They are supposed to be for live concert audio recording, however at 24/96 or 24/192 neither unit can handle over 2 hours of recording (most live shows run over that). If I want to record in 16/44.1 Ill go back to using my DAT's.
There is a definate need for these. Think about all the times you've gone to the mall and seen those "personalize this P.O.S for your loved one" They need engravers that are small as possible.
Now all I need is something to engrave my CD's so people stop yanking them.
With major airlines folding, profit margins slim, a bear market because of any number of reasons, and a new highly expensive plane. I mena you do the math... what major airline is gonna want to dump a bunch of money into basically untested hardware that doesn't have a safety record while attempting to pay out stock dividends. If I were in charge of a major airline I wouldnt consider picking this up for now either. Now if the airline industry gets a major rebound then is the time, just not right now in this shitty economy.
There are 2 problems with this article. First off, as the article says it really isn't fair to compare these two companies as their individual focuses are entirely different. Disney is a media giant, and is not focused on its video game market solely-- so it would make sense that ea could surpass them. its the same reason why nintendo has a better shot of surpassing the more diversified game makers.
It also fails to recognize brand recognition. A lot of parents (the ones with the money) buy video games for their kids purely on the brand name of Disney (albeit a misleading name).
Just a few things I noticed.
First off, there isnt even media out there that burns well at that speed. Even the highest quality CD-R's have high failure rates at this speed.
Also Asus cannot even begin to compete with Plextor in this market simply because of the quality of Plextor burners. Plextor is the gold standard for burners and this shouldnt be denied. When I see a burner with this quality ill think about it.
My first pressings of this kind of value never ever get played, they get either framed or archival stored. I have repressings to play:-) besides most first beatles pressings are mono:-)

This, to me, is the best story I've seen in a long time here on/. The story does a great job at capturing the quality of vinyl. I personally own much more on vinyl than I do on cd. Now I know you might think im in my 50's, but I'm 22. The fact is that CD's cannot replicate that beautiful warm sound of vinyl. Also, dont forget that owning vinyl is similar to owning history. Its beautiful. I gues sI've got a true passion for it, and I'm their niche market. Also, a lot of the old jazz I love just isnt put on to cd, and that which is has been remasterd so poorly I can't stand to listen to it.
CD's will never ever be true collectors items as they can easily be reproduced, vinyl is hard to reproduce, it has actual monetary worth (ie my first pressing of every official Beatles release).
This just goes to show that another service with crappy audio streaming is going down the toilet. I'm not paying for an audio service unless it delivers 16/44.1 sound or BETTER. I don't use kazaa or any of that dumb mp3 stuff, Id rather have the quality of my sound. Betcha when someone comes out with a way of nicely streaming 24bit sound then the music service will do well, until then see ya...
The question I have about this is where will this lead to with collectors assuming this catches on? For example, I collect vinyl, and much of the vinyl I own there are very very limited copies of. Because of this they are worth something. This is not meant to say that CD's are worth money (for the most part they arent worth the plastic they are printed on) but I wonder how labels will go about structuring things to limit them for collectors. I just hope people keep pressing limited quantities of vinyl:-)
If you feel strongly about this then change it. We often forget that the government is US. It is we the people, not you the people. Run for office, don't sit back and complain. Vote dont bitch.
Oh I just love that you referred to Shatner as "too cool" ha ha ha ha actually made me laugh out loud.
Oh and by the way- I saw Nimoy speak about a year ago. Very down to earth, interesting speaker.
If you knowingly create a problem then you should knowingly have to be a part of fixing the problem. For example, if I buy my car for transportation I need to pay the state based upon the emissions of the car (hence higher registration fees for trucks vs cars etc) and thats the price I pay. Kow that there are certain restraints put on the manufacturer of my vehicle that says they can't sell me a car that gets 2 miles to the gallon unless they and I pay hefty fees. The circumvention of this for the computer industry is saying- hey you can build whatever you want, even pack it in styrafoam (which they need to stop doing anyways) and if you are going to do that then you need to take on some of the responsability for the destruction you will knowingly create. I don't think the company needs to bear ALL of the burden, but the consumer and the company should bear it together.
Ok, I know that this probably doesnt jive with the majority of people who post here, however I'm not a tech person totally. I have my moments, but over all I'm just not. I'd like to get a better understanding of the inner workings of microprocessors from a laymans perspective... kind of like I'm in 4th grade. I feel like if I had that understanding I would better understand my machine, but this stuff is just too much for me...
In the live setting this often is the case. Go to a larger venue show, the stuff we often record, and look at how far the mics are from the main boards where a lot of the mixing is done. You are talking about large distances in the running of the snake. The longer the distance the more noise that is possible to be introduced into the cable. I'm not about spending money in unneccesary places, believe you me, however cable is really not a place to be skimped on. Take ratshack cheap speaker cable and run it 75 ft, run well made copper cable the same distance and play the same sound through the same speakers. you will definitely hear a difference. Mics are even more important than speakers. Canare Quad Cables and Audio Magic Cables carry sound noticibly differently even at 20 foot sections. Compare those to Hosa Cables. You will certainly get a difference not only in sound, but quality of soldering, signal/noise ratios, and in life of the cable.
You laugh at paying 100-500 on speaker cable... speaker cable is cheap at that rate. run it over 75 ft and you will hear a difference, believe me. Try running quad star mic cables over 500 ft. You are talking thousands per cable. It's expensive, but for sound quality its way worth it if you are in the industry and thats your profession.
Agreed, as an etree member (the real proponents of shn) I hate the MP3. I also hate new technologies such as this that compromise sound quality for size. What really needs to happen is that we audiophiles need more compressions like ape and shn and flac to come out that are lossless compression schemes. I dont want to hear my symphony, or even my phish for that matter, sampled down to lower rates or to have highs and lows cut off of them. If i wanted that I'd listen to the stuff through cheap speakers and a cheap system. But hey, what do I know? I just do pro audio work to pay my way through school.
I think the real question to you is what do you consider a devout Jew? I mis-presumed this when I said this--- I should have been more clear... not to take this to a discussion of relgion, but Judaism does not advocate a personal God, but rather a God of community. God rarely speaks to personal interest in the Torah, but rather interest that serves the community. This is what Einstein is believing in. Also do your research on Spinoza... most research indicates that Spinoza was excommunicated for a tax liability, not for anything having to do with heresy.
This is a really great article, especially for people like me. I don't understand science at all, but when I get to see the humanity behind the science it definitely peaks my interest, especially the part about Einstein being a peace activist. It never really mentions also that he was a pretty devout Jew and believer in god. He didnt really believe that spirituality and science were neccesarily very far apart. Even cooler was that he was friendly with some of the biggest philosophers at the time!

I too came across this, but I was searching for something entirely different... MegaSquirt oh come on :-)
