  2. Other factors on Understanding Burnout · · Score: 1

Reading the posts, most seem to fall on the demand from job. Maybe we are not seeing the bigger picture as to why burnout is getting so much attention lately. This is certainly not the first article I read on the subject and is certainly not the last. I have always wonder if our society is reaching a critical mass where burnout is a sign that a big crash is imminent. Burnout may be a sympton of the Technological era where jobs now place increasing demand on the human brain for work as oppose to the demands on the body of the Industrial age. We live in a services economy driven by new ideas. However, to produce those new ideas, we need to first incorporated hundreds of years of knowledge through endless study then apply it. Moreover, that knowlegde increased eponentially in the last one hundred years. Another product of this era is the devaluing of the professional cause by the increased enrollment in college. The percentage of workers with college educations is larger than in previous decades where now employers have a larger pool of potential candidites. In addition, many professional jobs don't have the protection of unions as they were not traditionally needed. Yet, these jobs are increasingly being exploited by employers in the form of reduce benefits, wages, and layoffs. Then, the final blow may be consumer economy driven in large part by the media. We are buying more yet selling less thus a creating a society of debtors. As anyone with debt knows, life can get real stressful when you can't make a payment. All this originates from the growth of our society with technology, media, and economy. I think were seeing a trend of increasing burnout whereby our society collapses under its own weight.

  3. A phone for Mac Users, Apple needs to do it itself on Apple's Smart Phone Depends on OS X Tie-Ins · · Score: 1

The early mp3 player market didn't provide a good alternative for Mac Users thus necessitating Apple to design the iPod. Similarly, the smartphone market ignores the Mac user (oddly, we're not a good group to ignore since we like paying high margin premiums). Thus, Apple needs to yet again do one for us. They will probably do a good job considering they would bring integration with Mac OSX and the iApps, the iPod click wheel, and a good design (the good at that). I like my Razr with its sleek design. But, its click wheel is slow at cycling through menus and it doesn't play mp3 ( at least this early model). Though it syncs with iCal, it doesn't do it throughly enough where I can set the phone alarms for events leaving me to do it manually. In the end, we want a well design device that can be our cell phone, our iPod, and our PDA and be fully compatible with our computers. I am afraid Apple is the only company that can design it.

I think the spies have watch too many James Bond films. It would have been better to have taken him to an abandon house, clipped him, and then pour lye over him to removed the evidence. Or here is a better thought, stop doing bad things. Russia should try to be more civil and stop offing dissidents and take a more American approach- brand them unpatriotic.

Jobs is basically dictating how you use the computer, and although that does not seem like a good thing, most users actually appreciate the elimination of the extra complexity they don't need.

I would agree but add that Apple has a considerable amount of experience on how humans interact with the computer with specific regard the gui. Aqua is not just arbitrarily laid out and then blessed by Jobs but is a culmination of years of research, listening to customer feedback, and the application of the rule we all learn in programming class- Keep it simple stupid. How many would do that much research on their own to find the most efficient way to use their computer? With career, social life, sleeping, and being active, there are few that would want to spend hours tweaking their gui's till it is just right. I certainly wouldn't and haven't even change the default background in OSX. I am happy with it! The infinite configurations that Linux GUI offers and the features that Vista offers are just wasted effort. Just pay attention to the people using your device and focus on the more popular functions as the development strategy

I would rather wait for Linux to be ported to Apple intel-based computers than for game developers to see value in porting games to Linux.

Isn't likely that those elements were formed in nearby stars with a close proximity to our sun given the fact that inverse square relationship to particles dispersion and our solar system has rocky planets. Since we apparently have a good supply uranium, our sun would have be near a supernova early in life. This doesn't seem like news because the lone nebula theory would seem unlikely because it would have accounting for all the heavy element material that made up the planets. I don't recall any clause in the user agreement where the ISP promised not to keep data on your activity. It is a tough question but I am glad Gonzales is making an issue of it because I think we all need clarity on what ISP deal with our Internet activity.

It appears Hollywood is showing signs of burnout. Their best bet to pull out their slump is to rehash old movies and old actors? Where is the creativity to develop new ideas that resonate with the audience? Creativity isn't making Arnold look 20 years younger while allowing him to balance making another movie while doing his day job. I suggest Hollywood go on sabbatical, take a vacation, or lavishly spend their millions. Another thing to do is the exact opposite by taking themselves off the pedestal and go with live with ordinary people (their audience). The audience is usually never in a car chase, an explosion, or being chase down by a fire breathing dragon. Their lives don't seem interesting at first glance but if they pay attention long enough, they might just get that idea to make the next blockbuster.
