nvidia offer more things people want on their desktop with reliability...
I can't talk about the nforce3 chipset. However, I bought a Athlon 2500+ XP with a nforce2 chipset as a windows gaming machine. It is the absolute worse machine I ever had in my life (and that is a lot of machines). Random BSODs, crappy audio driver that stops working, network driver that works intemittently, and a guarentee of a BSOD if I try to burn 2 CDs/DVDs without rebooting after each one.(Occassionally I can't even burn one).
Also, I use a KVM switch for multiple computers. For this machine (and only this machine) If I do not have the KVM set to it for the entire boot process it will change my monitor refresh rate to something unusable that can only be fixed by going back to VGA and reinstalling the video drivers. If I leave a blank CD/DVD in the burner during boot it will not recognize the drive until I reboot. Twice I had to reinstall windows to get it to re-recogize the burner.
I prefer Linux to windows. I would love to blame these problems on windows but I know I can't. These are all problems of the MB/Chipset. That is why I will not by an nforce chipset in the future.
Dell is pretty hassle free compared to most local mom and pop shops...
I usually buy from the "local mom and pop shops." You can have your choice of Processor/MB/VidCard etc... If you look around it is not difficult to find one cheaper^T^T^T^T^T^T less expensive then Dell and I have not had problems with them backing up their product.
That being said I do go with the major brands for laptops. This way I know I can get service on them in a few years before complete obsolecense.
Folks don't mind paying $50+ per hour for their vehicle repairs, but nobody wants to pay that sort of money to get their operating system de-loused.
If they did pay that much I would do it. The only computers I fix are mine and my mechanics. (My mechanic fixes my car in exchange for my services.) I know what software is on my computer and I tell my mechanic not to install anything and to use firefox (to avoid a lot of spyware problems.) If he started installing a lot of unknown software I would stop our arrangement.
I agree with the article, when people start installing every program under the sun all problems break out. You need to know what you did to the computer right before it starts running wacky so that you can undo the problem. You need to use common sense to avoid viruses and not to install programs from sites that say, "WIN $10,000 just install this program!!!" Most people do not know what they are doing and the best way to fix their problems is usually re-installing the OS and teaching them how to use a computer.
I agree with you. I am also a web developer and life would be a lot easier if IE conformed to standards.
However, if IE followed all of the standards, web development would truly become platform independent and a viable programming environment. This would stop vendor lock-in and be a real threat to M$'s monopoly. That is why M$ will fight it all the way. I believe it is the reason that IE 7 will not support CSS level 2 standards.
IMHO, the solution is to get all web developers to use W3C standards instead of a IE only mentality. If more websites merely worked with IE, but had a better experience in standards-based browsers more people would drop IE forcing M$ to use standards or lose market share.
Someone tell the Secret Service to stop monitoring IRC connections and go after lazy banks instead, or something...
Banks already have tons of lawyers and financial resources to fight back lawsuits. They also have lobbyists on capitol hill. It is easier to go after and blame individuals. (Just ask Martha Stewart; she took all the press's attention away from Enron and MCI)
Actually, I believe in programming in whatever language and environment someone wants to pay me for.
I'm 35 and have worked on Mainframe/Cobol/DB2/CICS for most of the last 11 years. However, The last 3 years I have worked with Cold Fusion/Web Applications 80% of the time, Cobol 20%.
I still want to know why Battlestar Galactica worships the "Lords of Cobol"?
Of course Microsoft wants you to pay for the cert... they can certainly afford one. But what about all the little guys who write code for free?
Thank You. I only wish I could mod that statement up above 5.
Microsoft doesn't make enough money from its monopoly, it needs to shake down developers for money to buy a signed certificate. If you don't buy a cert we will make the OS warn people not to install you application because your software can't be trusted.
Your grandmother uses IE because she doesn't know any better? Well who's fault is that?
Seriously, the "just-wants-to-look-at-the-interweb-and-get-email user" looks to a geek that they know to install their computer and show them how to use it. The first thing you should do is install Firefox and delete all icons for Microsoft products. Then they use Firefox for everything and think that "Firefox" means "Internet." Doing this in the beginning also allows you to avoid the call two months later asking "Why is my computer running so slow?" by avoiding spyware.
I agree. Mandatory change forces less secure passwords.
For passwords outside of work I use hard to know passwords - Mixed-case, number added, no dictionary words, and the password is not a friend, relative, or pet name.
Most of my passwords expire in a month at the office, the longer ones every 45 or 90 days. I use a simple word (capitalized if needed) and this is December so I appended 1204. This way I can use the same word next month by appending 0105.
I'm sorry, I consider myself an intelligent person, but if I am forced to use a dozen not-easy-to-remember passwords that change every month I would forget them and need my password reset regularly (which would increase the number of new passwords I have to come up with).
Its ironic that the company that probably benefits the most (Disney) from the copyright extension owes it existence to the lack of long copyrights 50 years ago. Lots of the older "Disney Classics" were based on books with expired copyrights. Disney never would have been able to remake Cinderella if the book they adapted it from had a copyright as long the laws allow today.
Admittedly, There is a large power demand for life support and the needs of people. However, I think that can be taken care of with solar power.
You are correct that you need adequate power to accelerate and decelerate the space ship; but distance will not matter because of inertia. Once the ship is at maximum speed you can turn the engine off and it will continue to Mars at maximum speed until you start the deceleration process.
In an industry that can considers 64K of memory a luxury, 1MB is staggering.
Surely I am not the only one old enough to remember The Vic-20 with its 5K RAM that greeted you with "3,583 bytes free." (which was left after necessary internal storage and buffers) And if you had an additional $150 you could buy the "luxury" of a 16K RAM Cartridge.
Well, one good thing about this new Centaur is that it is less likely for Bush to fall off of.
This is still Bush we are talking about. He can't handle a normal segway; he can't handle a normal bike. I think the Centaur would be more difficult to for Bush to handle.
Who wants to buy a HD-TV if the only thing on the air is "reality" shows? Also, who wants to be force-fed a DRM flag for digital tv?
I currently own a nice 36" tv with decent resolution(even though it is analog). Personally, I have no compelling reason to shell out my hard earned cash on a HD-TV.

You get what you pay for.
If you were going to stay a hospital for a few days for a surgery or illness, Would you rather have a nurse that values her skills at $10/hour or one that thinks she is worth $50/hour. Also, a nurse that works for less will put in longer hours to maintain the same standard of living. She is more likely to be tired and overworked.
I know what you mean. I've heard people talking about the end of Moore's law almost as many times that I hear about Dell using AMD chips.
In the mean time, What does YMMV stand for? That is a new one to me.

Ok, refusing to take legal $2 bills is pretty bad, But isn't accepting $200 bills worse?

Richard Garriot (of the Utlima series and many others) is jealous.

Surprisingly, The house from the Dilbert TV series looks nothing like this. I Guess dilbert cannot afford the house on his pay in the dot bomb era.
Oh, I'm sorry, I actually meant they are full of BLOAT, not FAT.
