  1. Re:Anti-Sunscreen on Miami Installs Free Public Sunscreen Dispensers In Fight Against Cancer · · Score: 1

No need to dismiss contrary points of view. It's clear excessive exposure to sunshine is unhealthy. It's not clear that sunscreen is safe to use. If you have to choose between the two, then yes, choose sunscreen. But there are alternatives, like wearing long sleeve shirts and long pants, and wide brimmed hats (be aware of reflective surfaces, like snow or water, that probably bounce UV rays under hats). Personally, I dislike the feeling and smell of sunscreen. I'd rather find another way to cover up or just limit outdoor exposure during high UV periods (use your parent's basement if you need to :)

  2. Re:Desktop multitouch: a tool looking for a purpos on Windows 7 Touch, Dead On Arrival · · Score: 5, Interesting

I use handheld computers on a regular basis at work. When I switch back to using a laptop after spending some time using a touchscreen device, I naturally want to touch the screen to move windows, select items from the taskbar, etc. It's silly that the functionality is missing. There's no need for this to replace the mouse. Touch-display and mouse input should complement each other.

  3. Accept it as part of the game on Fighting Online Game Cheating in Hardware · · Score: 1

From the perspective of playing FPS: It's easier to just consider cheating as part of the game. You're invariably going to encounter someone who's better than you - whether they're cheating or legitimately great at the game. It's just part of the challenge. There are, of course, the people who use cheats to make the game pointless (ie. they become ridiculously efficient at winning) but when this happens it's usually pretty easy to see what they're doing, and kick them out.

  4. Is the audio clipped as well? on Why Music Really Is Getting Louder · · Score: 1

It may just be the crappy audio on my PC, but it seems like a lot of the audio is clipped as well. The Johnny Cash remake of "Hurt" starts off fine, but when he gets to the loud parts, it just sounds awfully distorted...

Is clipped audio represented on the CD or in MP3s? It seems like you should always be able to represent a non-clipped waveform using digital audio - that it would be the playback equipment that would introduce any clipping based on it's capabilities. Is this accurate?

  5. Re:CD drives! on A Silent PC Solution? · · Score: 1

Your first guess is right, they are for balance and vibration. From the Lite-On website:

Why is my CD-ROM drive so noisy?

Swishing noises when CD-ROM drive starts to spin: LITE-ON IT has designed high speed CD-ROM drives with ABS (Auto-Balancing System) which uses tiny steel balls in enclosed ring to minimize vibrations during operations. Between the time the disc starts to spin, and the time it attains prefect balance, the steel balls will continue moving until they have found the ideal "resting" location.

Loose parts when moving the CD-ROM drive: In the application of the ABS system, the steel balls are allowed to move around in the ring shaped encasings with little or no friction to ensure the proper placement. However, this means they are free to move when the drive is shook, tilted, or moved in such a way that changes in the plane of the CD-ROM drive has changed direction.

  10. Re:One of the first cases on Hardware Review Sites and Vendor Relationships · · Score: 5, Informative

One of the first cases of this was when Tom's Hardware (then only a startup site) reviewed a Riva TNT and said it was twice as fast as 3DFX voodoo (obviously untrue, but it's unknown if Nvidia paid him anything to say this). Eventually 3DFX picked up on this and demanded that Tom changes it, which he did.

Here are the reviews from Tom's site:

Comparison of Graphics Cards with NVIDIA's RIVA TNT Chip
Addendum to Banshee, Savage3D and TNT Preview
New 3D Chips - Banshee, G200, RIVA TNT And Savage3D
Preview of 3Dfx Voodoo Banshee, S3 Savage3D and NVIDIA RIVA TNT

I only skimmed the articles, but he doesn't seem to be saying that the TNT is twice as fast. The last article concludes:

"NVIDIA's RIVA TNT is not the new wonder chip as some people may have expected. However it is sticking up very well against its toughest competitors from 3Dfx. 3Dfx has still got an edge in applications that are available in a Glide version and in games that don't strain the CPU as much, thus giving a dual Voodoo2 configuration the chance to show its power. However, there are many occasions where TNT is at least as good as single Voodoo2, dual Voodoo2 and certainly better than Voodoo Banshee."

Seems fairly objective to me. Did I miss something? Maybe the articles have been edited?

The best part is that its got such a cool narrative and storyboard, and the way it takes you through it is awesome.

It's the freedom of the game that I love. I've played enough mini-movies. It gets boring. GTA is awesome becuase you can just PLAY. I have more fun just driving around than I have playing the missions.

Contrast that to one of the LOTR games I recently played. I swear I felt like a hamster on a wheel. The objectives were clearly laid out, easy, and boring, and there was nothing else to the game.

Freedom is what gives a game staying power. That's why games like nethack are still around. (nethack rules :)

Don't be so quick to discount what hasn't been proven. Vaccines are a huge source of income for drug companies. How difficult is it to get a study to show whatever you want? A quick search on google shows several studies supporting conflicting points of view on this topic.

Here's a couple of things that strike me as interesting:

Some vaccines contain thimerosal, a preservative which contains mercury.

Children can recieve unsafe does of mercury from vaccines. (from the FDA: depending on the vaccine formulations used and the weight of the infant, some infants could have been exposed to cumulative levels of mercury during the first six months of life that exceeded EPA recommended guidelines for safe intake of methylmercury.)

The symptoms for autism are similar to the symptoms of mercury poisoning. ("Autism: A Unique Type of Mercury Poisoning" by Sallie Bernard)

Maybe there's no link, maybe there is...
