  1. Austrian Wildlife to Blame on Austria's 'Bionic Man' Dies In Car Crash · · Score: 5, Funny

Recent updates to the story via the Slashdot tagging system suggest that he may have swerved to avoid a Kangaroo, a common cause of accidents in South Eastern Austria.

Kangaroo pouches are only so big.

Kangaroo purses, on the other hand, are huge.

  3. Pink Salmon on Australia's Vast, Scattershot Censorship Blacklist Revealed · · Score: 1

The intention isn't to censor, the government is using the censorship (also known as 'protection') furphy to get it's foot in the door of Australian ISPs.

What this is really about is the first step towards putting a stop to the downloading of TV shows. The web censorship hype has always had the monitoring of downloads riding on it's coat-tails.

Aussies downloading prime-time TV is hitting the hip-pockets of some very influential people, the television station that backed Rudd from the beginning by giving him free air time has recently announced that they will be entering the ISP business, providing pay-per-download via the web.

Odds-on Conroy will end up being thrown to the wolves, word is that he's been given this job as a way of discrediting him and getting him out of the political scene (he is something of an idiot, so no loss there), the censorship thing will die a natural death and everyone will applaud a victory for democracy. In the meantime, the government will have done it's tests and internet users will get fines for copyright violations as automagically as those for traffic offenses, pay-per-download via the good folks at Channel 7 will be there as a convenient legal alternative.

  6. More Specialization Required on Lego to Stop Producing Mindstorms · · Score: 1

I disagree with most of the posts here, Lego needs to become more specialized to deal with the changing tastes of it's customer base - Lego Porn is the way of the future.

  7. 2 Things in Life on Software Exorcism · · Score: 1

There are only 2 things you have to learn about in life - people and systems.

If you focus too much on one, you're always going to be at the mercy of people who have focused more on the other. It doesn't mean that you'll be taken advantage of, but the potential is there.

You can learn people skills anywhere, but for some of us it requires a conscious effort.

I develop software and work in the real estate industry where the basic rule is, 'If it aint written, it aint true'. People forget things, getting it written down and signed off is the only way to conduct business to ensure that there are no dramas waiting for you further down the track. Sometimes bad things happen intentionally and sometimes they happen because a situation gets confused and people do whatever they can to protect themselves. You're an asset to yourself and whoever you work for if you keep things as clear and business-like as possible.

  8. The Effects of Technology on People on Spider Robinson And The State Of Science Fiction · · Score: 1

I remember a friend telling me a about a French author who wrote about automobiles some 50 years before they became common place, the interesting thing was not that he wrote about cars but that he wrote about traffic accidents.

  9. National Treasurer on Preserving the Sound of America · · Score: 1

I remember listening to some sound samples from the Library of Congress about a year ago when I heard you could get to some of their library.

I got to listen to a blues harp player recorded in a Southern prison some time in the '30s by a couple who were travelling around the US making recordings of folk music for posterity.

That's the kind of thing that makes the net something special for me.

  11. Truth in Advertising, Breaking News on Slashdot on Microsoft PR Rep is the Switcher · · Score: 4, Funny

The ramifications of this are astounding, imagine if this sort of thing is going on in other industries. You know those housewives who give testimonials about the effectiveness of washing powder? The fast cars that are guaranteed to improve your sex appeal? How can we trust anything we see in advertising anymore?

  12. Re:If you have to write a mailing virus... on Bugbear Windows Virus Making the Rounds · · Score: 1

Actually, here's the interesting thing. The first of these e-mails came through our system earlier this week from a company we deal with (at least the return address was a company we deal with, it looks like the virus uses other address book entries to hide where the email is actually coming from), had a subject line and message content that was valid for our industry and even had an attachment that looked sincere (except for the .scr extension).

I've spent a lot of time educating the users at this particular company about spotting attachments that are suspect, however, two people opened attachments because at first glance they appeared real.

Say what you will about user stupidity but for someone who's main focus is not technical and who's just trying to get through their workload it's an easy mistake to make.

That's the most interesting thing to me about this virus, it's the social engineering aspect that has been so effective in spreading it, not the fact that it tries to use an old vulnerability in OE.

Anyone else noticed the same thing?

Yep, same thing, all the printers in our office went nuts (nice touch).

This turned out to be a pretty easy one to remove however.

Just rebooted into safe mode, removed the files from startup and the entries in the run registry so that the AV software could work and then cleaned up.

  14. blender interface on Mouse Gestures Gain Followers · · Score: 1

The blender interface has an interesting variation on this theme. To rotate/size an object you click and drag the mouse either elliptically or in a straight line and the program goes into the mode that you have indicated. It's a little bit like the shorthand you use on a palmtop.
