You're not getting all the bits anyhow. Studio recordings are at least 24-bit resolution samples now, and sometimes 96KHz sampling rate (or greater). The CD you get is a maximized, squashed, crappy sounding 16-bit 44.1KHz version of what the final (pre-mastered) mix sounds like. Welcome to "louder is better".

Maybe the Purdue CS degree is above average. He did say "most", not "all". My sense is that the spirit of his comments are right. Industry expects a certain set of skills for entry level jobs, which unfortunately has lead many real CS programs to shift their focus from science to skills training. Alan Kay has earned his place as a leader in computer science. I'd suggest listening to what he has to say instead of dismissing him as a jackass.

Probably not short sighted, but rather an space and cpu efficiency issue. Space - If you have 64-bit doc ids, even if you index 2^48 documents you're still wasting 16 bits per stemmed word per document. CPU - dealing with 64-bit integers on 32-bit hardware usually involves multiple loads, and decreases what can fit in the hardware data caches.

  19. This "patch" leaks memory - and other bad stuff on Open Source Firm Releases Patch for IE Bug [UPDATED] · · Score: 5, Informative

A list of the bad things about this "patch", just at first glance:

    1. Leaks 256 bytes on every URL navigation
    2. Leaks 512 additional bytes if it finds an exploit URL
    3. Creates a string with the \1 char in it on every call, but does nothing with it
    4. Will overwrite stuff on the stack if the URL has the exploit and is very close to 256 chars in length.

It's a good thing these guys aren't on the real IE dev team.

Also, head phones aren't allowed in my office, because if a plane is about to crash it can make them feel ignored.
