if it gets installed on all the pcs that currently have google toolbar installed it will be on 90% of pcs in a year. all they have to do is bundle it with pdf readers, driver installers (or whatever ) like they do with the toolbar
hrm, i suppose you could say not moving forward is not really a setback, however i disagree with your point that 4 evenings being on the easy side, it's still 10 hours trying to kill one guy with no reward (and a hefty repair bill). The *only* punishment an mmo has is taking your time (through denying you resources that you have to grind back or whatever), which means that making it harder would mean that it would tilt it the other way towards making you spend every moment on there.
most of the bad stuff you're saying about wow doesn't have to be true:
Re setbacks: we got stuck on gruul (end game boss) for 2 weeks, i'd call that a setback.
Re no life outside of wow: We have raid signups, i sign up for sundays and wednesdays and play from 8pm till 10:30pm, i'd hardly call that not having a life. Most guilds just want people who can turn up when they say they will, not spend every moment on there.
the problem is that it's a short step from "no pirated code" to "no unsigned code". when the whole thing falls to pieces ms would probably lobby pc manufacturers to not allow any unsigned code to run at all, which means suddenly it's a much higher barrier to entry for small & open source players.
It's a good idea, and i'd jump on board whole-heartedly if that was all it did... linux suddenly looks a lot better when you actually have to *pay* for windows. however it gives people who are not me too much power over my computer. In order to have a chip that stops piracy in your computer you'd have to trust microsoft. Nobody (smart) trusts microsoft.
ext2 works pretty well for ext3 drives so they don't care enough to do it. Anyone who does care about ext3 that much i'd guess probably doesn't care that much about windows.
Sound is gone out of there, so it's just 3d networking, input and peripherals and networking. I don't know how many devs use dx networking but i'd *guess* most of them would roll their own, and sdl does a good job with peripherals and input on other platforms, so imho the extra stuff in dx isn't that much of a deal breaker for opengl.
Unless there's a major shakeup at ms i can't see them releasing windows 7 on time, it's a major re-write rather than the spit shine vista was. (Just my opinion, no hard facts were included in this post whatsoever)
meh, the amount of effort involved is pretty low, imho it's worth doing just so people can find uses for it. Games are a good one, i'm sure there are a few more.
Dude, if you wanna install the nvidia drivers you just click on the little green pci card on the top right and tick the box in the restricted driver manager. duh.
I don't think mandating HD be this resolution is useful, however mandating that all channels having to be clear as to what resolutions they're broadcasting at would be very useful indeed. For the market to self correct people have to know what they're buying.
I'd say in most(!) cases a specialist makes less money than their nonspecialist manager. However, my real considered opinion is that so much energy is wasted in every life that jack of all tradesing it is always a better spend of time than at least one in five of your friends, so why even bother justifying it. on the whole it helps (slightly) with a goal you find important, and whilst you could spend your off time catching up on your day job as an accountant and working towards 100% efficiency, your buddy who spends all day playing wow and getting stoned is fucking up your averages.
From what i saw of RE4 i don't think you actually kill the zombies, you just run at them with and empty gun and feed them your brains.... I kid! I kid!
You bring up an interesting point: Would it just be easier to euthanise all the vb programmers than kill off the language?
Villian? Sounds like a stand up guy to me.

I'm pretty sure he stated he was happy with his gift horse, even after a dental inspection.

i thought doom got big because it was fucking awesome for the time.
maybe he just wants jim to slap himself. It's probably part of his job desc.
I could care less about whether you prefer could or couldn't care less.

true, but i suspect it would be as fruitful as trying to catch clouds.
Remind me not to get on your good or indifferent side....
even more amusingly, you can simply sign up someone you don't like via a website simply by knowing their phone number. good times.

So what, now that balmer is free of gates' meddling he can finally express his love of oss ? :)
