I look at this as someone who's been directly involved in bringing ogg/vorbis to both streaming mediums, and hardware players. Put quite simply if you want ogg vorbis support to pirate music you might as well stick with mp3pro, or mp3. Roughly (if not less than).5% of music on the P2P networks is in Ogg Vorbis format, and quite frankly we're happy to see it that way. So how can Ogg Vorbis be supporting piracy, if none of the pirates are using Ogg Vorbis?

I'd really like to see something like this support ogg vorbis or flac or somesuch, cddb and cd's themselves are outmoded as far as I'm concerned (except as an archival medium) for media playing.
yes but under extremely bright (dangerous) light levels, your eyelids are not 100% effective in blocking light. A blink also is not enough time to trip the lenses, it generally takes 30-40 seconds for them to go from clear to dark or vice-versa.
This sounds cool, but really it's not going to be easy, or desirable. The automatic darkening lenses are nowhere near perfect, and don't notice sunlight but UV light. Ask anyone who wears them in a car, they don't darken because the windows/windshield have a UV coating. Quite frankly in combination with the HUD display, I'd like to see what electronics can be built into sunglasses in the future. obvious note: IANADR (I am not a Doctor, but I work with an optical lab where doctors write perscriptions for these lenses)
With a bit of work (And hopefully photos of my new house and this setup upcoming) a wraparound TV isn't all that impossible. Using a wrapping screen and an LCD projector this should be only minimally hard to achive. I'll post pictures when/if I get this working in my new house. I'm thinking of throwing the front speakers BEHIND the wrapping screen so they aren't in the way.
Dual headed X11 running Enlightenment with the nifty LCARS ETheme. Assuming both screens are touchsensative, and hopefully someone writing an LCARSesque qwerty applet for E, I think they'd really be on to something in looks, or at least the headturning factor. Laptops are cool, but the entire Star Trek look (which most phones have no gotten) hasn't quite made it to them yet. This thing is really REALLY cool.
just in addendum however, this would require a serious rewrite of the current "shoutcast style" media servers. Shoutcast style servers are basically glorified HTTP servers, run on a different port. The stream itself is a "mountpoint (really a URL location)". A stateless setup would have to simply broadcast out over the wifi channel (Say at the broadcast address) and just disappear into space if noone is listening. Basically the switch from active to passive streaming should be noted here. Perhaps a DHCP style mechanism to log in, and the client just recieves the stream from the broadcast.
valid point, for streaming mediums other than wired point to point setups, (or basically wireless broadcast to the masses, a stateless streaming setup would be much more scalable, with minimal if any client return data)
I'm gonna stick my head out on the chopping block and talk about the term possible. Mathetmatically ANYTHING is possible. There is no perfect mathmatically impossible situations. Thus mathmatically speaking it is possible to build unbreakable encryption.
I would personally say it's roughly as probable as IIS never having a security flaw again, or say cw.net removing all the spammers from it's systems.
in _THEORY_ every encryption is now unbreakable, since doing so violates the DMCA. Well we all saw what that got the world, now, didn't we?
anyways my two cents.
Two big bands already allow bootleg tapes, under terms somewhat similar to the GPL, support these bands, such as the two in the subject, and you support trading music in a free and fair environment.
One of the GREATEST freedom espused by the GPL is the freedom to SELL what you make, in the case of the distros this is the packages and the installation system. This fee also covers support. The big different between Microsoft software and GPL software is that the GPL requires you distribute the original source with the binaries.
perhaps they're only worried about THEIR sales as opposed to say, everyone else's who are all MAKING MONEY off MP3, and related distribution.
The problem is the Music Industry (note that I hate this term, music should never be an industry) decided they wouldn't embrace the Internet, and when they did this the same decision was to squash anyone who does use the Internet. This is basically the same strategy our friends up at Redmond have been using, and debating the finer points of in the American court system for some time now.
this has become a prerequisite of such a story but here goes.
IMAGINE A BEOWULF CLUSTER OF THESE!
now that it's done and over, please no more beowulf posts:)
Quite frankly steve, I'm impressed, you got it this time, you can't beat your opposition when they're giving away their product for free. No matter how much betters yours is if ours is free they'll use ours... AOL is learning this lesson right now. So steve, I mod you +5 for insightfulness, and hand you a shovel to assist you in digging your grave, you can't buy us this time steve-o, sorry man.
Really... he isn't that bad. consider the crap the industry tries to pawn off as music. The boy bands and britney spear(me)s comes to mind immediately, don't bash semi-decent bands when there are so many horrible ones to beat on.
Mc Donalds has for years kept coffee overly hot bceause it keeps LONGER, that means fewer thrown away half pots of coffee, and thus more profit. This woman was not the first to sue McDonalds, she was just the first to clean up on it. The jury saw a case of a Corporation simply feeling that more money would be saved on coffee than spent in litigation of neglect cases. Yeah the amount was excessive, but the fact that the coffee was served too hot for suspect reasons is why the price attached to it is what it was.
The above poster is EXACTLY right. They do not unilaterally ban P2P protcols but simply take action against those who abuse them. 99% of what I download are Dave Matthews Band concerts (which are legal to transmit per the DMB Taping policies. The other 1% are songs in my CD collection that quite frankly I am TOO LAZY TO RIP. Furthermore my computer is in 100% compliance with all licenses of all software installed (note IANAL, I pay for it I install it, I don't share it etc etc, I might be breaking something somewhere but I've paid for it so I'll simply scream fair use). There's no excuse to pirate anything. It's free! (no it's not, someone paid for it, or stole it) It's Easy (Download install use... install use... yep two steps is certianly easier than three). Those bastards deserve it anyway! (now here I'd agree but question your morals if you use spite as a reason to trade content... and if you don't like them why do you have your content on your computer in the first place.
I salute what USC did, the letter itself which is posted later in this commentary is superbly written and explains in clear language why this is harmful... I do question however, why is a taxpayer/grant based establishment in the business of creating intellectual property... I thought you were supposed to create graduates?
You're scared Xiph.Org is going somewhere? I can safely assure you we're not. Xiph is still rocking, Vorbis is just the beginning, the Ogg Vorbis Streaming archatecture, Ices/Icecast is on the way, a guy named trelane (well me) has been doing a lot of shellscripting and automated integration work to take a stock *ix box to a streaming multimedia platform with a few keypresses, and next year... ooh baby next year, the beauty of Theora will be released upon the world. That's all the iceburg, save the tip, and the tip is a supersecret (not) project that you're just gonna have to wait to find out about. Worst part of this one is they put me in charge of it... MUAHAHAHAHAHA! GO XIPH AND GET FISHED BABY!

While Icecast does support metadata, without a plugin to xmms or the source or whatnot (some poor sob typing) Ices cannot send metadata onto icecast.
This is really pretty cool, and is more or less how I tested icecast over the lan... I hope my neighbors wern't listening.

can we hit them with it for a change? Just because the law is inherantly evil doesn't mean that we can't use it to our advantage, for bloody once!
