I can buy Madden 2004 for PC, Xbox, Gamecube, PS1, and PS2.
I can buy music in.wma,.aac, steal an mp3, or buy a CD. If you limit yourself to an ipod (as I have), then you limit your choices. And you did it all by yourself.
I've got an old 10gig, it's about 3/4 full. It's all legal music. None has DRM. I've never bought music online, except for CDnow.
The very fact that Linux can run supercomputer clusters, embedded devices, or just be a Windows replacement is one of it's core strengths. Some people really do like the windows look-n-feel. Let them have a distro too, all right?
I'm just a blue-coller guy (machinist/cnc programmer), but have been into computers since my Vic-20. And I have a sub-6 digit uid:)
While cleaning malware off a neighbors computer and setting up his dsl/wifi stuff this weekend (skills that totally amazed him), I was asked again why I don't get a real job doing IT stuff. I had to explain that just because I know how to change my own oil, I don't want to work at JiffyLube.
Funny you should ask. I was just looking at the wizards website last night, wondering if my son would be half as interested in D&D as I was at his age. I haven't played in at least 20 years.
I'm not blaming the Bush administration, I'm blaming the entire history of american government. There will never be an administration of any elected party that will support marijuana legalizaion.
And if cigs were illegal, and cost me $20 a pack on the street, they woulndn't be worth it. At $5, they're still an affordable luxury.
Am I bad because I just don't care? How many different residential 'solution providers' do I really need? Is the potential savings really worth the effort that it would take me to choose which the best VoIP provider would be?
I got cable/hdtv/broadband modem/telephone all coming into the house on one wire, and all being paid for with one bill. One phone number to call for customer service. Simple, I like it. And I don't have to waste any time checking to see who's lowered their prices or added new features.
Thank gawd for our Longstanding Telecom Overlords!
I can just sit back, know I'm not getting the absolute best service at the absolute best price, accept the fact that I'm getting boned, understand that there is nothing I can do about it, and not have to worry about the $5/month I might save or the one extra feature (that I'd never use) that I could have if I changed providers.
Which lets me spend more time on my crack style net porn addiction.
Unrelated to software, but a similar situation from my industry:
Honda has a patent regarding the routing of the front brake line on their motocross bikes. Yamaha is forced to use an alternate (longer) routing to keep from infringing the patent, which ends up decreasing sensitivity on the front brake.
Suzuki ignores the patent. Honda doesn't care. They aren't nearly as concerned about losing sales to Suz as they are to Yamaha.
And I have a bunch of short brake line kits for those yams, if anyone wants better brake feel.
I had a prof at the AFAcademy that had been part of the the weather crew at a base in TX. His favorite story, sorry I don't still remember all the details:
Radio call came in from a SR-71 somewheres near the east coast. Requesting weather info for a fairly specific time somewheres on the east coast. After the call, the guys in the office calculated that in order for the bird to make it to the described location at the specified time, it would have to be moving just over mach 4.
Now, I'm not normally of the tin hat persuasion, but the actual top speed of the plane remains classified. And I have a hard time believing they'd retire it without a working replacement.
The F-117 flew for 9 years before anyone knew about it.
Actually, the report was only $25,000. They paid it to a guy with a company named "Warp Drive Metrics" in Vegas.
His report recommended the $7.5m. Not the USAF.
What did the AFRL say? "There are no plans by the AFRL Propulsion Directorate for additional funding on this contract."
All they spent was $25k. My truck cost more than that. Its a bargain if they actually find a 'recommendation' worth following up. Just one of the costs of having the most technologically advanced military in the known universe.
I've installed many times, many distros, and can vouch for the validity of this problem. It got to the point, where I relized I'd glitched up the installation, that I've wondered if it was something I'd be able to fix on my own, or should I just restart the install from scratch.
On my last attempt, I borked the video just like you described. But instead of grabbing my iBook and googling for an answer, I just sat that and thought "Is this going to be worth it?"
It's running win2k, firefox, thunderbird, privoxy, it's behind a nat'd router, and just gets used by the kids for finding cheat codes, pr0n and grabbing.mp3s from usenet when their parents aren't looking.
And I haven't had to mess with it once since the day I set it up. No spyware, adware, virii, problem of any kind.
If I were really smart, I'd go image the drive so if something did happen, it'd be a quick recover. Hmmm...
Mod parent up!

focus on its core strengths

And yet, you failed to register ebay.com, mp3.com, and slashdot.com.
and register.com.
Don't matter. None on TOS looked real for that episode, anyways.
What other non-IT folk hang around /.?
:)

Hells yeah. If I could get something like this that'd replace 10 mills and 4 turning centers, I'd be stoked!

...a replicator?
If it doesn't match, you get a half-assed apology
No, they just find some other route to fucking you.

And god knows this administration isn't ever going to admit when it's wrong. That crime will be on the books for a long, long time.
I do, however, propose making cigarettes illegal. Maybe then I could quit smoking.

If I couldn't look at net porn and rub one off every so often, I sure wouldn't be able to deal with the stress my wife lays on me.
Just think long and hard before you pick your branch. I was enlisted AF during the first gulf war. Spent the entire time in Kansas.

Or, so I hear.

To big a project for too small an audience, I think. How many years would it take to build an open-source app equivelant to solidworks?
I've spent serious cash on cad/cam software, and I'll continue to spend it until a tool comes along that can help me design and program parts faster.
Which means I might try an OS cad program, maybe once a year, get disappointed after about 20 minutes, and delete it for another year.
It wouldn't have the loyal following of users that strive to make it a competetive product.
If the Gimp isn't "as good" as Photoshop, big deal. If OScad isn't at least as good as Solidworks, I'm losing money.
Ahh, the days of walking into a Kmart, typing a few lines of code into the display model to start poking random valus into random locations.
And doing it over and over and over.

Beautifully fucking said.
Paltrow mentioned on The Daily Show that they did use blue screens.
Death comes at the box office.
I've seen so many comments where the poster was describing how easy it really is to cancel Netflix. I just cancelled my account with 3 clicks.
Why's y'all cancelling your accounts? Just to prove how easy it is? Really, only one of you needed to do it. Not all 20 of you.
