I have never, EVER purchased a CD single before. Why should I pay $10 or more for a bunch of remixes of the same song? If I want remixes, I go to Napster or a similar service..

BUT, I hardly ever download any full albums from Napster -- in fact, yesterday I went out and bought two Pink Floyd CDs, PLUS both Radiohead CDs, simply because I had downloaded a few songs off Napster, said "Hey, this is great!" and felt obligated to follow up.

  5. Re:5 words: I'm happy to live in Canada on The Modem Lives On · · Score: 2

I live here in Winnipeg as well.. and I am more then pleased with Videon's cable service. Instead of one of the old, black, COOL looking cable modems, I got a new, beige Motorola Surfboard modem with doesn't appear to be capped at all. Combine that with the fact that NOBODY in my area has cable, and you'll discover that I'm playing $40 a month for a T1-like 'net connection.

Hooray for the west end, babyeeee!

  11. My Take on Hannibal on Hannibal's Return · · Score: 2

I, like many people, was anticipating the release of HANNIBAL for a long time. Naturally, I went and saw it the first night it came out. Later that evening, I was asked by one of my female friends "How was Hannibal?". I liken getting asked this question to being asked "Do these pants make my butt look fat?". She was really anticipating the movie, read the book, etc etc etc, so I had two choices: Lie, and say "Yeah, it was great!" too be nice, or tell the truth and scream out "NOO! The pants don't make your ass look fat, your ass IS fat!"

Hannibal was quite bad. In fact, it broke the laws of physics, proving that something can both suck AND blow at the same time.

Wait for it to come on PPV; it will only be like a month. And you won't get screwed out of $20 per person after food.

  13. This Isn't Necessisarily (SP) Bad .. Really on Did You Do the Long Form? · · Score: 2
    From the article:
Knowing, for example, the names and addresses of wealthy people in a certain area who endure a lengthy commute every day would allow marketers of cellphones, car stereos, books on tape and other driving accouterments to home in on likely customers.
Now, wait a second here -- I know that if I was somebody who made a rather lengthy daily commute to work, I would be interested in products that would make the trip easier. It's comprable (kinda.. sorta..) to targeted advertising on television. People who watch sports channels tend to buy more beer and sports magazines.. you don't see those ads on a children's channel, right? It's just targeted advertising..

.. on the other hand, I don't really want somebody knowing how much money I make, what kind of car I drive, or how many children I have. I think that this is really pushing it.

  14. The @Home Tech Support People Snoop, etc on DSL Woes · · Score: 2

When the @Home tech came to my house to install my cable modem, he was quite friendly. While I watched him work, he did not poke at my files, explore anything out of the network settings, and that was it. He was quite helpful and friendly.

HOWEVER, when I was having problems with my modem constantly dropping, I called @Home and had them send a tech over, who was, for lack of a better word, a complete prick. He came in, sat down at my computer, and proceeded to go through the "My documents" (yes, I use Windows on this box. No flames please.) folder. When he heard me go "ummm.." he clicked down to Control Panel, and went and started fucking around with my network configuration, even before he asked me what the problem was. It was attrocious -- I take my computer to LANs all the time, so I have a few extra protocols, etc installed. He, without asking me, proceeded to remove ALL of them, except the ones that are required for the service. Naturally, I lost all the settings.

It was awful. Plain and simple. Anybody else have a similar experience?

  18. Sneakemail on Norway Bans Spam · · Score: 4
Sneakemail is a free service that you can use to generate disposable email addresses.

    From their website:
These "sneak email" addresses are aliases of your real address, which is kept hidden.

You can enter these Sneakemail addresses into web forms or use them to contact e-businesses without the risk of your real address being abused or bought and sold.

Consider each Sneakemail address as an informal agreement between you and an online business or organization.

You agree to allow them to contact you through this address, and they in turn, by accepting and using this address, agree not to abuse this privilege by sending you unwanted solicitations or to give or sell your address to others.

The best way to understand Sneakemail, if you don't know the technology involved, is with a telephone analogy.

Imagine you discovered that, due to a technical error, the phone company freely gave you a new phone number whenever you asked and didn't revoke the previous number. If you kept asking you would accumulate a bunch of phone numbers that all went to your one phone line. You realized that, if you could find a phone that showed the number somebody was using to call you (reverse-caller-id?) you could do something very useful.

Every time you needed to fill out a credit card application, or a store clerk asks for your phone number, you would give out a unique phone number obtained just for that purpose. That way, if you start getting calls from telemarketers at that particular number you could call up the phone company and tell them to disconnect it. Not only do you succeed in stopping the annoying calls, but you know who gave them your number.

Sneakemail works just like an unlimited supply of phone numbers and a "reverse-caller-id" phone, except, of course, the phone numbers are sneakemail addresses, which you can create freely, and the special phone is your inbox.

  19. While Not A -TECH- Job .. on Forbes' Five Worst Tech Jobs · · Score: 2

.. I thought I should share my worst job experience. Before I went to work for GameSpy, I worked for Famous Players' Silver City Polo Park in Winnipeg, MB, and it was the worst job ever. Let me tell you why.

Let's start with the physical stuff, and work from there. While I was working at Silver City, I was a member of the 'floor staff.' It's not as glamourous as it sounds -- we were responsible for cleaning up theatres and bathrooms. 'Pfft, that's alright' you think. 'Popcorn, drinks.. easy' Oh, yeah right. Over the 9 months that I have worked there, I've had to clean up many a puddle of vomit, blood, alcohol, and a used condom. And all that for minumum wage. ($6 per hour.)

Don't get me started on the management. Favouritism ran rampant -- some people would get tons of shifts, while others would get one per week. In fact, that happened to me (one shift a week) -- I even wrote a nice long letter expressing my discontent, but it didn't help.

    So, that's MY sob story...

  24. I Hate New Years.. on Slashdot Readers Write The History Of The Future · · Score: 5

.. and I'll tell you why. All it does is serve as a reminder, to me anyway, that I am alone. Not ALONE alone (I have my wonderful parents and friends, whom I love very much,) but rather I am alone in a relationship sense. I've had no less then 10 ICQ messages that include the phrase 'be sure to kiss someone on New Years.' Guess what? I have nobody.

It's not that I'm quasimodo-ugly; I've had people tell me that I am actually quite attractive. However, here's the catch -- women don't seem to be interested in me IN THAT WAY. They'd rather be my friend then my significant other. (In fact, my female friends outweigh my male friends about 5 to 1.) I'm nice, warm, caring -- exactly what these women are looking for (I'm generalising, of course, but this is what I've been told.) and yet they can't see the forest for the trees.

So, what will the New Year bring? The next 100 years? Women will bitch and complain to their best male friends that there are no decent guys around, and all men are assholes. They will whine that they can't find a decent guy to go out with. I have a message for you women who say that -- WE'RE RIGHT HERE -- we're the ones that you're complaining too. Give that geek who you're best friends with a chance -- we're great listeners, and have fantastic job prospects.
