  13. When was the last truly evil virus? on Why Virus Writers are Useful · · Score: 2, Interesting

After reading some of the comments, it seems that people agree that almost all viruses used lately are somewhat harmful, but not as bad as they could be.

What was the last virus that really did exploit a serious security hole to the worse possible extent? SQL Slammer maybe? I would imagine that any virus that has access to run a process on a remote machine with administrative rights could do some real, permanent damage (e.g. delete all system files that don't happen to be in use at the time).

Why do virus writers write malicious viruses that aren't *that* malicious (or at least as much as they could be)? I mean, some of those lately are set to expire! Do they hope that if they get caught, the judge will go easier on them since it "wasn't really that bad"?

Personally, download size matters little to me with a broadband connection and the option to download in the background/ahead of time (though this depends heavily on having broadband vs dialup).

Reboots absolutely, positively are the reason I wait to actually run the updates when I see the "Windows has new updates to install" message. When you have 20 applications open, the last thing you want to do is close them all, run some updates, and reboot.

It'd be nice if, when displaying the mouseover text in the systray, in parens they could say "(no reboot required)" or "(reboot required)", and maybe be bold if they're critical updates.

A question for you all -- (please answer! I need to make a decision within a week and didn't want to do an "Ask Slashdot".. thanks!)

Is it normal when switching positions within a huge corporation, to not get a base salary increase, even when the job requires much more technical expertise?

Here are some details.. I am currently in an IT job, due to the market for software engineers and the fact that I just recently graduated with my BS in CS.

I was hired, believe it or not, technically under a "help desk" position, and was transferred within a couple of weeks (as they had told me I would) to deskside support, since they didn't currently have a slot for it.

I'm now in the position of taking an application installer developer position within the company, that also requires some programming. They need someone pretty bad, and I have two years experience and much more education than anyone that's currently on the team now.

My current manager is strongly hinting that I'm just going to transfer with my current salary if I take that position, but that they'll try and "catch me up" in terms of base salary, though also hinted that a rough amount would be 10%/year if I'm lucky. I should be paid about 30-40% more right now, if I took the job (no, really -- remember they started me at the high-end of a help desk salary).

The question is, is this normal? Isn't it the case that the employee I'm replacing was making X, so I should (based on experience, technical knowledge, etc) be possible to be paid up to X amount? How do I confront the new manager on this issue? Thanks a lot for any insight!

One belief states that the world and the human race is 10 000 years old (give or take) , and that both were willed into existance by God. The other states that world is several billion years old.. This is not necessarily true -- there are plenty of creationists who believe the earth is several billion years old (me included). The difference being what the word "day" means in the book of Genesis. Original Hebrew can show it to mean "period of time". Similarly, the Bible says to God "a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like a day" (i.e. human's time is mostly incomparable to God's time) Ergo, the 6 days God took to create the earth was actually a lot longer.
