We have a steep driveway that goes down to the backyard (probably 30 degree slope). In the winter it's relatively difficult to get up, but it's amazing how many people just floor it and spin their tires on snow and ice. Then I laugh, tell them to back up, and accelerate with any slippage, and they get right up.
Reminds me of people in the south who panic when there's an inch of snow on the roads.
From both a pragmatic and principled perspective, the best foreign policy is one of non-intervention: Refusing to interfere in the internal affairs of, or intervene in the disputes of, other nations.
Sort of how US policy was in World War II... the entire world is dang lucky that Pearl Harbor got bombed, since the policy then seemed to be exactly this.
The long term capital gains tax rate is 15%, substantially lower than the 25, 28, 33, and 35% tax brackets that affect people making $29,000 and up.
...to encourage investing in the long term, something that is not limited to the wealthy (and if it is, how do you think they got that way?)
The Social Security tax, and the hidden employer contribution, is capped at $87,000 income. The people making over $87,000 a year pay proportionately the least to Social Security, will require its benefits the least, and stand the collect the most in payout.
Someone who makes $87K/yr will get the same as $300K/yr because they both put in the same amount.
If you make over $87K/year, they figure you can figure out how to save for retirement yourself. Social security is security that you'll be able to live, not enjoy retirement. Personally, I'd rather be able to choose not to contribute at all, and handle my own retirement planning (but don't recommend that for The General Public, because the people are instant gratification-following fools.
My strong guess is that they would quickly approve eye surgery for entrance into military service...

VoIP Questioned

Great story -- I'm very seriously considering getting VoIP (just haven't gotten around to it). Is there any software with it that you can configure on a file level?
e.g. I'd like to delete voicemails (and not even know about them) if the WAV files are 100K or something (to delete the hangups).
Also interested in eventually having an in-house speaker system read the Caller ID to me instead of ringing the phone.
I'm just imagining that since it's getting closer and closer to the computer, that I can get the functionality...
That's because those two headlines they comment out say the following:
A 2002 Microsoft-sponsored study of total costs of ownership over five years for working corporate infrastructure in North America shows that lower staffing expenses are a large part of an 11-22% cost advantage for Windows.
Microsoft-sponsored benchmarks prove that multiple Windows Web servers perform better than a Linux mainframe acting as a Web server consolidator. An independent review by Meta verified the integrity of the results.
(emphasis mine)
Apparently the PR slamming they're taking for those studies made them (at least temporarily) remove them from the site...
In case you're looking for a job, you can work for a high quality company. Here are some of our openings:
Accounts Payable Accountant 26 May 2004
(to many bills, not enough income) Senior Software Engineer 13 Jan 2004
(location: New Delhi, India) Inside Sales Manager 09 Jan 2004
(we don't have Outside Sales Managers because nobody outside our company uses our products)
The point is abuse of monopolistic power; the abuse arises from the ridiculous profit margin.
They're not "competing" since they don't have competition.
An attack helicopter sent in against a tank and other mechanized infantry is going to get shot to pieces with out a GREAT pilot
What?? Tanks are an attack helicopter's primary target -- a tank is not going to take out a helicopter, nor is mechanized infantry without attached ADA.
If a higher salary is the sole reason someone is going through 4+ years of post-secondary education, I pity their philosophy.
I got a degree for many more reasons than just a higher salary (e.g. self-actualization growth through accomplishing a goal, opening options of career paths (whether high paying or not), more respect (to a certain extent), but above all, gaining knowledge *efficiently*).
That's a great idea, but I think I'd base it on something more useful.. the median salary at the company. There will always be some minimum wage jobs in most companies, and that's okay.
Using the median instead of the average will prevent the upper end from getting big raises, since there's only a few at the top and many at the bottom.
Good luck and I applaud your efforts. My wife recently found out she was sensitive to sugar beets and needed to flush them from her system (by not eating any). She doesn't really even crave any kind of sugar now.
In March, we had 7 people leave off a team of 30 within a month, and all of us (yeah, I was one of them) got huge pay raises.
Maybe that's the moral of my story though... you have to leave to get that "raise". In my experience, Raise = Switch Jobs.

Makes me think there si NO encryption on any of the data...
What's that word before "NO"? Hmmm... it must be encrypted.

Actually, almost everything is buttons (i.e. even quieter)

All I have is one word: Jared.
It *does* matter what you eat, even if it's the same thing every day.
Granted, I think you do need a balance, but a sub is more likely to provide that balance than a BigMac anyway.
"Blocking another driver"?? So in rush hour, am I driving illegally because I'm "deliberately blocking another driver"?
Please, show me this law.
Quite the contrary, many states have laws that state that the driver who hits another driver from behind is at least 90% at fault.
Oh, since I asked for a reference, I suppose I should give one to backup my statement. Okay, here it is...
Yuk. One of the primary reasons why I go to google is because it's clean.. Verizon page: 66.8 KB Local Google page: 9.67 KB
The point is abuse of monopolistic power; the abuse arises from the ridiculous profit margin. They're not "competing" since they don't have competition.
Marking up the cost of a service by 30-60% (compared to what an independent business would charge) seems like an abuse of monopoly power to me.

It is quite the opposite of what you say.

Most people don't want a keyboard and mouse sitting in their living room, nor the awkward use that would come from it.
Saying "that's why I have a remote" doesn't work either -- you get no more functionality from an HTPC remote than a component remote.

No kidding!
It was so cold in the winter we wore gloves
Wow.. that sure is cold... in Mpls, I have to wear a winter jacket, hat, gloves, and multiple layers of clothes!
Alabama is not even close to cold. Ever. Especially considering the average winter low is still above freezing.

The parent (that I was replying to) also said:
I don't regret not buying SCO.
That's like passing on a lottery ticket that you know is a winner.
Good luck and I applaud your efforts. My wife recently found out she was sensitive to sugar beets and needed to flush them from her system (by not eating any). She doesn't really even crave any kind of sugar now.
You'll be better for it.
That's it. If you buy SCOX, you're buying a lottery ticket
Tell that to the people who bought at $1 and sold today. They've cashed in their lottery ticket already.
