The point is that the wireless broadcast of your neighbors is entering your home, unencrypted. Thats a fairly friendly invite to use if you ask me. Simply turn on encryption and the invite is gone.

AMD's turion chip is quite competetive against the Pentium-M... even after Dell's steep discounts. Its not quite as low power, but its much more powerful and is the ONLY low-power 64bit x86 chip on the market. Period. If Dell is looking to incorporate AMD on all system types, I'm sure they will find a healthy market for Turion notebooks... they sure beat the hell out of P4 notebooks. On the desktop side, the Sempron still just crushes the Celeron and is cheaper. Factor in Dell's discounts and they probably cost about the same, but there is still a performance advantage to the Sempron. On the low end, AMD still makes more sense. Gaming desktops... well, that should be a no brainer why AMD makes sense there. Pricing issues aside, they are the fastest gaming chips around. If Dell wants a gaming rig performance crown, they'll use AMD. And as you mentioned, AMD has much more compelling server chips. Intel recently launched their dual core Xeons, but since they are based on the horrible dual core P4's, they can't touch the opteron... clock for clock, dollar for dollar, or however you want to compare it... The Xeon is overpriced flaming (as in really freakin hot) peice of crap... at least when compared to the competition. Even if AMD didn't have a performance advantage on servers, the power savings and reduced heat alone are enough to make them attractive in many data centers. Add to that the fact that they do have a MAJOR performance advantage... its just a no brainer and makes Dell look pretty silly for waiting this long... if this all isn't just another hoax. Either way, I have little respect for Dell.

Also, at the beginning of the paragraph he says that he is doing this to find better ways to prevent and contain the problems with spyware/adware/malware, not to bash IE. Personally, I've already come across some Firefox/Mozilla SPECIFIC spyware/trojans using Firefox/Mozilla's automatic XPI extension installation. If I were an average joe user, these could very well dupe me into clicking through and ruining the privacy, security, and integrity of my system... assuming I could even still use the system afterwards. I look forward to the findings of this poster, and the findings of similar articles. Security through obscurity is comming to an end for Firefox and Mozilla, so these are important issues.

Windows and IE are not the most used because they are better than the competition. The sucess of webmail services from Yahoo and Microsoft have historically been from their placement in a larger portal system that has nearly endless features and content to attract users. Google does not (yet?) offer instant messaging, gaming, sydicated content (Google News generates no revenue and is aggregation not syndication), career tools, finance tools, caladers, or any of the other thousands of little features Yahoo and MSN offer under a single brand. I believe that they are fighting for different users. Very few Yahoo and Hotmail users will switch over to Gmail, especially since they both have SOME spam blocking and lots more space than before. For most users, Hotmail and Yahoo! Mail will continue to be enough for existing users of MSN and Yahoo portals. For those who are in the future attracted to the MSN or Yahoo services, they will continue to sign up for Hotmail and Yahoo! Mail accounts. But, that doesn't mean Gmail won't take off... it just won't take off by taking mass numbers of users away from Yahoo and MSN.
