  8. Why are they not doing this already? on Debian Working on Reproducible Builds To Make Binaries Trustable · · Score: 1
I was doing this 15 years ago. Your build document specifies the build computer (Brand, model, OS version, etc.), the tools needed to do the build (Compiler(s), Script to code translators, etc., with exact versions), and the source version, with instructions on how to pull that version from the repository. And all the steps in the build.

Our build package included copies of the OS install CD, install media for any tools needed, and the complete code set as text files.

You wipe the disk on the build machine, install the OS, install tools, run the build, and you get a known result.

This should be standard procedure for any software released to the public (Or purchaser). If not, you are open to chaos with releasing software. (Been there, as user. Not fun!)

In your area, look for model train shows. You can get lots of ideas, see what is available, and usually pick up old stuff at low prices.

    Second tip:

Look up your chapter of the NMRA. They will have meetings, contacts, and activities where you can 'talk tains'. And fine new buddies.

    Third tip:

Find a local train club. They can help you get started or show you what not to do.

    Fourth tip:

Model railroading has something for everyone, but one person has trouble doing it all well. From automated train control and Loco management with computers (JMRI) to painting buildings to show soot and grime, there is something you can enjoy.

On the finance side, clubs unfortunately have experiences handling estates of former members. My Club has 3 estates for sale at this time. (Lots of old farts like me!)

    Good luck and have fun.
