  1. Re:Thoughts from this Wii owner on Two Weeks with the Wii · · Score: 1

The day I got my Wii I was playing Wii Sports with friends and we go at it pretty hard getting our entire arm into motion...not sure if it made a difference in game play, but it made it more fun. There were a couple of occasions where after holding the remote for a while then going to bowl for example the damned thing almost slipped out of my hand. It wouldn't have hit the TV, but the wall, and hard, had it come loose and I not had the wriststrap on...because I don't think that wriststrap is going to do a whole lot....one thing is for sure though, I make it a point to put it on.

  2. Re:At least you got a Wii... on Two Weeks with the Wii · · Score: 1

I disagree. The stores (at least in Chicago) seem to be getting decent shipments at least once a week. I picked mine up the week after launch and hate to wait outside a few hours at Best Buy (where they were releasing 30 the Sunday after Thanksgiving) and my brother-in-law had no problem over the weekend at a Target which received 60 units the same day the Circuit City next door received 40.

Extra Wiimotes is where we've been having trouble. Its also a little annoying that the Wiimote and Nunchuck are sold separately.

As a side note I have to agree with the review, the gameplay is just so...fun...something to add, some games take some real getting used to play well, Madden 07 is a good example. Its a unique and rich gameplaying experience and helps train you to the remotes controls it still takes a bit of learning curve. However, once you get acclimated make for about as realistic football experience you can have without pads on.

A few years ago (6 I believe) a company called Cool Chips LLC (which was traded on PinkSheets.com back then) claimed to have done the same thing. Unfortunately outside of the first round of announcements (which may have even been on Slashdot), nothing more was mentioned. In the comments back then it was hypothesized that an energy conglomerate or oil company would buy Cool Chips out to keep the technology from ever coming to the market. Me wonders if that might have happened, or if some of the primaries from Cool Chips are now a part of this venture.

  6. Re:Quality TV will diminish? Huh? on The Mythbusters Answer Your Questions · · Score: 1

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a fan of watching commercials or product placement in TV shoes, but the shows we watch have to be funded somehow. What's wrong with an entire episode, shown commercial free, that touts a sponsor for the 1/2 hour time slot (or hour depending on the show)? I'd rather have a 2 or 3 minute commercial air before my show telling me about some product and how they are providing me the next 27 minutes of television than deal with commercials in the middle.

The unfortunate situation (depending on your point of view) is that we live in a capitalist society that is run based on profit margins. You've got to pay everyone involved. Would you appreciate it if you worked on a product, but because of circumstances you can't control your company is unable to pay you? In essence that is what we are doing when we are skipping our commercials or downloading the commercial free torrents. I'm not innocent, but commercials, unless we start paying the networks for each episode of a show we watch, are a necessary evil.

  8. Possible implications on Deep Impact Blasts Off For Comet Tempel 1 · · Score: 2, Interesting

We, as a race, don't know all that much really about "whats out there." But we are still able to figure out where a comet is going to be an how to impact it. But did we stop to think about the possible implications this mission could have on the universe? They were talking on the news about how it will probably make a crater the size of a football field. We already know that that is a huge amount of force.

Think about it like this, you have an 800 pound mass (the 1st rocket, destined for impact) traveling at 37000 kph. Effectively creating the force of 4 and a half tons of TNT going off. If this explosion happened at the surface it would probably make no difference whatsoever, but its not. Will this impact alter the trajectory of the comet? It might only slightly shift it, but for a planet far far away, that slight shift might be enough to cause a ELE on the planet that the comet might now ultamitely hit.

I realize its a longshot scenario, and I'm sure taken into account at some point. But was it taken seriously enough?

Anyway, just my little, "are we considering everything" thoughts....

I think you are well off base by saying that the "music seems to be striclty anger based musc. (the words may have a positive message) but the combination of the rhythm and mono-tonic notation of the singer, Just gives a feeling of anger to the listener." Quite the contrary, there are a number of artist around, though some of their music is anger derived, that I would argue, do not leave their listener angered due to the cadence of the music.

One person already mentioned The Roots, an inovative Rap/Hip-hop group that plays its own instruments in a soothing blend of melody and rhythm. Other examples also abound, which do use other musical pieces as their backdrop. For example, a song called I'll Be Around by Rappin' 4-tay samples The Spinners classic song and Coolio's C U When U Get There which utilizes Pacobel's Canon in D. These are only 3 examples, of which many more exist if one takes the time to listen to more than the songs with excessive radio airplay. I can understand if Rap is not a music you enjoy, as there is likely something that you like to listen to that I prefer not to hear. However, to say that it doesn't "produce any positive benefit and there is little diversity within its own type of music", is far from the truth as saying 2+2 = 5.

My thoughts don't necssarily pertain to your friendly neighborhood bar or pub. I enjoy going to my local bar and hanging out and shooting the shit with the bartender. The use of something like this would be more worthwhile in a club or big bar kind of setting with loud music where you are there to hang out and talk to the bartender. You are there to hang out with your friends and meet members of the opposite sex. I don't want to replace Sharon at Nanny Obriens at all, but if I go to a big bar or club I'd just as soon have a bot make my drinks because I'm not really paying attention to the bartender in that instance anyway.

  24. I want one! on Linux-Based Bar-Monkey · · Score: 5, Interesting

This is awesome! This has plausable commercial implications. How nice would it be to goto a bar and not have to worry about tipping someone, you just slide your credit card or insert your money and select your drink and you get it in 10 seconds. If I owned a bar I would consider it. After all, the money stuff would be pretty standard to implement, people have been doing stuff like that for years. So say you need 3 for your bar to operate efficiently and you would normally have 2 bartenders working. So you spend $500 a piece on the robots, and you normally pay 2 bartenders $5/hour+tips to work the bar and your bar is open from noon to 3 am each day. That accounts for $150/day in employee expenses.

Now you implement the robots and your initial investment in them is $1500 and cost to run is literally nothing but electricity. In addition you would need 1 person there responsible for checking IDs and swapping out liquours, so that is say $100/day because you aren't giving the person tips anymore. You've saved yourself approximately $50/day in operating costs which means in 30 days the robots have paid for themselves and you see profits increase by $50/day which over the course of the year is $18,250. I'd say this is a bloody good idea if someone had the resources to market and mass produce this.
