  1. Re:Who says there is a loss? on Student Loans In America: the Next Big Credit Bubble · · Score: 1

(Disclaimer: These figures are for a standard commercial loan. I have no idea whether repayments differ substantially for Stafford/Perkins/PLUS/whatever.)

Standard student loan repayment plans are 10 years. If the borrower is on this income based repayment, and their income is very low with respect to their debt, their monthly payments could be as low as $5 per month -- at which rate not even the interest is covered, so this hypothetical student would never pay off their loan. After 20 years of such payments, the borrower will have paid back $1200 of their loan(s), and the remainder would be forgiven. Of course, not every borrower qualifies for IBR, and you can assume that in 20 years, the majority of borrowers who DO qualify will find better jobs, or get married and have joint income, and so be forced to make larger and larger payments as their income increases...the reality (as mentioned by someone else) is that very few borrowers will see their debt forgiven under this program.

    You should reread my comment.

I didn't say you were a console fanboy, just that you sounded like one because you seem to think PCs die every day, consoles are infallible, and are capable of playing every game ever.

But then I read some of your comments in other slashdot stories, and saw that you mention playing various games not just on consoles. So I amended my opinion to say that you weren't necessarily a console fanboy. You certainly seem to prefer consoles, and your comments in this thread are certainly biased - but you don't seem to qualify as a fanboy in my book.

Clearly you need to work on the reading comprehension. I may be forced to reevaluate my conclusion for my first point though...

And for #5 - I know that with the subversion bundle, someone put together a nice command to bring up a comparison between your copy and the repository in the File Merge program. It's probably not a huge stretch from there to what you're looking for?

As for #1 and #2 - I believe there has been some discussion on the Mailing list regarding this type of thing. You can actually get into the language definition through the bundle editor and fix it yourself (which is really a ridiculous answer to give, I know - it's not your job to fix that kind of thing - but hey, this is Slashdot, we're all open source friendly here).

    Those games are dangerous.

I don't see how they could be more dangeous than TV... what's the difference between sitting on your ass for hours on end watching "Must See TV" (or Baseball/Basketball/Football or whatever), and sitting on your ass for hours on end playing a video game with friends?

They way I look at it, with TV, you veg out and passively let this entertainment wash over you. With video games, there is at least some interaction - your mind must be a little more active, at least... make decisions, etc. I fall asleep within 20 minutes of sitting in front of the TV...

Is playing WoW for 3 hours with my friends on TeamSpeak worse than Poker Night at my buddies house? Monday Night Football at my brothers? 10 hour marathon D&D campaings back in Jr. High?

I could be wrong, but I don't think it is. It's different, and many people looking at it from the outside see someone sitting at their PC, alone, for hours on end. But sitting there, playing a game, talking to friends? Doesn't sound dangerous to me. I'm not saying it's better - just no worse.

I could be addicted though, and in denial. But whatever. I get to keep in contact with friends and co-workers across 4 states, and have fun doing it. TV doesn't do that for me, and I'm not driving 6 hours to lose at Poker.

The danger is not in the game, it's (as others have said) in the obsessive-compulsive nature of some people.

Well, I can see this is going nowhere.

The 7-11 joke makes no mention of anyone putting the locks on the doors, or coming up with the idea to put the locks on the door, or hiring the locksmith to put the locks on the door. None of the above parties are mentioned, or given any consideration in the joke. One simply wonders why have the locks at all. When I heard the "lock on the 7-11" joke, I didn't think, "Ha, stupid Locksmith."

In Baseball vs. Football, I have to admit, I have never heard the version including John Madden, but I'm sure you're right, he is probably meant to suffer. But "Baseball's creators" are all dead. Everyone of them. They aren't suffering. Period. And being both a football and baseball player (when I was young and had my health), I can tell you, I did not suffer from any implied comments about my nature. It is the sport in general which is given the "violent" or "timid" nature; and neither baseball nor football can suffer.

My point is this, If you want to extend the focus of the joke to include everyone and everything even remotely attached to the subject, I'm sure you can find someone or something that suffers. I don't know that that is what makes the joke funny. But in any case, I'm done. I can see where this discussion is going now, and I really should be working.

Have you heard the Football Vs. Baseball skit? No one suffers there - not even baseball fans (no, they don't).

What about Gallagher (sp?) asking why there are locks on the doors to a 7-11 which is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week? No suffering, but it's funny (sorta). I remember him also doing an entire skit about how the English language is messed up (G-O is go, T-O: toe? NO, TO! or something like that).

Now, don't get me wrong, I enjoy someone elses suffering as much as anyone else. More than most, in fact; it's a sickness, really. But I just cannot agree that a joke is only funny when someone suffers (which in fairness is not what the original comment was, I don't think), it just helps.
