Can't provide citations since the numbers I saw were internal, but the smartphones thing is very much a Western and developed Asian phenomenon. In terms of numbers, the biggest seller out there is still the Nokia something-or-other, 1112 maybe, despite being pathetic in comparison to any smartphone. In large parts of the world, the only thing that counts is price and battery life.

She works in HR. That is the kind of thing HR people know about. Hardly a surprise. How do you think the right amount arrives in your bank every month? And you should suggest to her that it is a good thing for her to keep her mouth shut about it. No, she's not likely to be caught, but if she doesn't have her own internal boundaries, then she will get herself into more trouble somewhere down the line.

The problem is that if you as a doctor choose to treat someone with the powdered remains of a diseased duck, that's fine. If you choose to carry out an experiment using the powdered remains of a dead duck and comparing it to the current treatments, suddenly you must comply with a vast apparatus of test facilities. The loser is, of course, evidence based medicine.

There is something in that, I think. You can argue all you like about rights and what makes just law, but the fact is such events tend to drive the national mood squarely towards security over civil liberty.
