My bet will be at some point, M$ will have to stop this altogether OR they will make a huge exception for the other half of the world.

It will be interesting to see......

Wait until he wants to do some really cool networking toy playing with his shiney new Mac and he will soon see the shortcomings of the Mac as well. You still must jump through a few hoops to get it to work.

It all depends on what you need to do to make a living. I too am sick of ppl expecting Linux to be desktop ready right now. For the most part it is. I still use windows, i still use *BSD, I still use Macs I mean there are no 'One size fits all' desktops out there. They all have shortcomings.

JWZ, get one of your beers you sell, sit down, and quit trying to be that 'Last Angry Man!'

People ALWAYS forget, that the most important 'innovation' MS has is MARKETING and very little of it is actually unique and innovative technology.

Is Pascal used mainly with Delphi these days? I wrote software in Pascal years ago, when you could get Borland's Pascal.

I went on to other development tools but always liked Pascal and its descendents Modula and Oberon. I never understood why Oberon never took off either.

  9. I dont see this happening on Could Microsoft Buy Red Hat? · · Score: 1

But if it does it would be a hostile takeover as they say. I don't think Management is in this for the short haul but rather the long haul. Selling out to MS right now would only give Management short term gains.

On the other hand, stockholders are nearly always short term junkies and would probably want it to happen if the price were right.

Out of the box Solaris 5,6,7 and 8 are VERY insecure if left unpatched. Even when patched they can be rather insecure and crackable with ease. Though more secure than Windows servers, Solaris is MUST be patched and basically run with RPCs all shutdown, if the server is running outside your intranet. Placing it in a DMZ is also a must.

  25. A TEMPEST in a Teapot? on NT vs. Linux: Again · · Score: 1

I think it is a tempest in a teapot... Practical experience has shown ME that NT has been unreliable and slow on my nets compared to linux. Fact of the matter is, why would i run a webserver using samba? I would never do that. I run linux, and apache for my webservers. They never crash and they hand 70000+ potential users, using a .cgi script. I have NEVER....I repeat never had a crash OR complaint from my users period.

Without regard to the tests conducted at ZDNET, practical experience has shown me which webserver to use, not to mention, which one i use for more mission critical applications and services.

I suppose that those that are tired of the crashes will turn to linux. Those that dont experience it will continue dishing out the bucks, and stay awake at nights wondering if when they go into work in the morning whether or not there will be a 'blue screen ' waiting for them and then they go on.

I find it really odd that some system admins find it entirely acceptable to have a server and/or workstation crash. I would like someone to explain that one to me!
