i got a new iBook about 3 weeks ago, and my biggest IE issue is slashdot. i mean, it literally freezes the browser until the page loads...if the story is over 100 comments, i've taken to using netsape 6.2 (hahaha, now THAT'S a POS!).
if you have a microcenter near you (www.microcenter.com), they have it on sale for $14.95 this week...of course that's 2 weeks after I buy mine online for $25. :-p
Jon,
I just wanted to let you know that I am currently reading 'Geeks'.
I bought it at a thrift store where I normally buy old pc parts for.50 cents. The small, green, hardcover version...
I have always disliked your movie reviews on/.; I find them glib and shallow.
I also find your articles here on Slashdot to be deliberate bait. I usually skip them.
However, I am really enjoying 'Geeks'.
Your writing style seems more fluid. More personal and yes, it definitely seems to be better edited.
In particular, I like that you advanced the boys cash. That seems human; I'm currently at the point where they are planning their 2nd move, and I really hope that I see more interaction between them and you.
As most geeks now, once you find a mentor and someone that believes in you, things go better. I'm betting that your interaction played a big part in the success of these boys.
Additionally, have you done a follow up on the book? What became of these guys?
Anyway, I'm going to try re-reading your stuff in the hopes that it lives up to 'Geeks' on a second reading.
It can't even keep track of my username. "Welcome VISITOR" after it tells me 'signin successful'.
It's a big endless loop of 'sign in', choose a movie, 'sign in', etc.
Already slowed to the point that it's worthless...
Also, no 'Clerks' or 'Chasing Amy'. Or the search function just doesn't work...
In 1997, I wrote a cruddy VB app that removed cookies from the users PC.
It was the first 'cookie killer' program, and demand was high.
In 1997, I registered over 700 copies at $10 each.
According to ZDNet/Cnets downloads, there were over 60k downloads from their links, and I know that my server was kept quite busy too (this is before major b/w restrictions on hosted servers; who'da thunk any small guy would ever hit 10gb transfers, haha)
Anyway, the hassle of a day job and real life got to be too much, and in '99, all of my utilities were made freeware/some of them open source.
I got maybe 10 emails a week with thanks,etc.
In 2000, I wrote another little app that really caught in in a big way.
Now hosting actually cost me something, and I needed to recoup my losses, so, I put a "paypal donate' button on the site.
Almost 2 years later, I have built in the donate buttons to all of my my about boxes, and each month, I average 12 donations of about $5 each.
It's enought to cover hosting and also: beer money...
Anyway, my point is that no schema is going to help. Either put it in a damned box, or accept that fact that human nature means that if it can be stolen over the net (or even in the box), it WILL BE!
I suggest that Ambrosia focus on charging for support or insulting and let the software speak for itself.
When you're pulled over in most states, your license is checked in the issuing state.
If your offense is particularly bad, it is usually ran through NCIC, which IS national, and even international. Some states automatically use NCIC (CA,FL,TX), regardless of the offense.
Privacy be damned, making this easier for law enforcement is a good thing; and the first time someone is caught in another state, whether it be for terrorism or wife beating, it will have earned it's stars.

My point is that wasting money and time like this, on something as trivial as a movie is plain stupid.
Why not go at night, or on a weekend?
Waht about all of their clients that can't do business because some jackass decided to take his company to a MOVIE?
Forget the 'what a nice guy' stuff and think about the actual business aspect.

Frank Capra's "It's a Wonderful Life"
What would the Christmas season be without the proverbial film about that holiday? You know the one I am referring to, where we all learn "every time a bell rings, an angel gets it's wings". Of course you know the one I am referring to.
It is called "It's a Wonderful Life", and over that past years has come to represent, on the whole, the meaning and spirit of the Christmas holidays. People coming together to help a friend, coming home for the holidays, and the comfort of having a warm and safe place to call home. Today's FamSite is one that celebrates the film, and the persona around it. Here you can find out little known details about it, as well as biographies of the cast and crew. You can check out links to other sites, as well as collectibles. There is even a contest, and you can catch up on reading the Bedford Falls Chronicles.
Enjoy this site. It is a fine tribute to a film that helps us all remember that "no man is a failure, as long as he has friends". It isn't on television as much as it used to be (for various reasons), but be sure to watch it when you can. Enjoy your stop here.
the sound card is some crude chipset which can't be used at the same time as the CD ROM because they share an interrupt (though why would you want to?)
Did you know that some people listen to these new things called 'audio CDs'? It's a new technology, but I think it will catch on.
A B C, easy as 1 2 3 ...
sigh.
How sad that you don't know...
The Who: Who Are you?
read the story.
he got away with it.
and why would he reboot the machine?

PS:
I was really intrigued to learn that you're 'post middle-age' and have a college age daughter. Not sure why...

"Hey democracy lovers, add Quorum as a custom slashbox! "
you *do* know that doesn't work, right?

Open or not, proprietary or not, unless the quality is as good as *at least* television, I don't want to waste my time.
If I'm paying for it, I want to enjoy it; nothing political about it; Real SUCKS.
:)
"Sorry !!

Thank you. "
I'd rather not watch than have to watch it in Real.

anonymous coward suits you well.
probably by selling $500 worth of hardware for $1200.

In a sense, this is really already in existence.

Can you still download the archives? If so, where?
All that info would be incredibly useful!
What format do you think it would be in? Threaded text or database format or what? How would you read it or search it?
Also, what do they do with the attachments? Imagine THAT archive. Heh heh heh.

That's an Americanism. It means the same as 'in the boonies' or 'bum f*cked'.
Essentially, it means in the far reaches of nowhere.

My guess is that we will see your company on fuckedcompany pretty soon...
OK, enough of the silly unimportant searches.
Where's the FIRST mention of goatse.cx?
That person = internet king.

This thing sounds like a joke.
