  2. Re:Warriors of the Wind on Miyazaki Talks to the Guardian · · Score: 1

Agreed. I think that you're referring to Carl Macek, the butcher of anime. Everything he stuck his hands in was horribly disfigured. Macross Saga (Robotech in the US), Nausciaa of the Valley of the Wind (Warriors of the Wind), I think he was also responsible for the maiming of Fist of the Northstar (the original anime movie in the '80s). I think his offspring are the people that run Funimation (those who mangled the release of Dragonball Z).

As long as someone can wrench it free from the hands of Harmony Gold and Carl Macek. I remember waiting for Robotech II: The Sentinels and when it finally came out... it was terrible. I would enjoy a movie version as long as it stayed true to the original Macross.

I wish there was a way to mod you higher than a 5. You have really pointed out something that we have forgotten in America. What happened to a company that exists because the people who started it loved an idea or thought that they could provide something that no one else was providing? Why is it that the American dream has now turned into "become so rich, make so much money that you could not spend it in two lifetimes"? It really is depressing...

  7. Re:How far does this go? on Lyric Sites In Trouble With The MPA · · Score: 1

I am having a weird day, I am actually going to defend the MPA and the RIAA here (probably the ONLY time I ever will). To use an example (and I know this example may negate my point out of pure principle if you are not a "Weird" Al fan): "Weird" Al and others who parody music have to ask permission and/or pay a fee of some kind to make a parody of a song. They have to get that permission from every aspect of the song's creation (unless there is one source/owner of the song). If they are merely doing a parody of a style of a song, using similar beats, riffs and vocal styling, then there is no need to get permissions, because, for the most part, a style of music is not copyrighted (who knows how long that will last). I know that the easy counter here is that parody singers perform for profit and I would agree with you. But what about citing written works? As I recall (please correct me if I am incorrect), the words to a song fall more under the written version of copyright law. As with a book, you can quote bits and pieces of a work without plagarizing, but quote a paragraph or two and you could be in trouble. There are also books out there that implicitly state that if you want to quote ANY part of the book you must ask permission from the author. I think the online music lyric publishing is like that. It's annoying as hell, and I completely believe that if someone is putting up song lyrics and not making money off of it, it should be allowed, because I have also gone crazy trying to find a song via its lyrics only and I have also gone crazy trying to figure out what someone said in a song (The Cure are notoriously difficult to understand...Rob mumbles). This is all my opinion, anyway...

yes! this was a great film that almost no one knows about. The bummer is that there are no plans to release it on DVD which is sad, because I read somewhere that the theatrical release was actually a cut version (there was a three hour laserdisc version and the original was over 5 hrs). It would be nice to see the whole film. Another plug for another underappreciated film would be "Dancer in the Dark" with Bjork. Great film, very very sad, depressing story.

    >Why? You'd have to be an idiot to ignore reality, but that's what you're advocating here. No. What I am advocating is a change in thinking. Yes, the reality is this is how the system works right now (has worked for a long time). It does not have to continue on this course, true it would take near anarchy to make an effective change, but remember that small changes can ripple to become large shifts in thinking. You'd have to be an idiot to sit around and do nothing about the things in government that you don't like. >>Mass media exposure is everything. Without it, the people who vote won't know a thing about you, and therefore won't be able, much less willing, to vote for you. The mass media is owned by a few large corporations with agendas. This is another example of a status quo that we allow (to an extent...I know it exists and has, blah blah blah). I know there are necessary evils and this is one of them. It can be controlled, but enough people have to care though. >>Wrong. Repeat this until you fully understand it: You cannot vote for someone you don't know about. ?!?If you allow your voting decisions to be made strictly by what a candidate says in an ad campaign, then you deserve what comes to you. There are plenty of venues online to research a candidate. Try using critical thinking for once. Final note: I would rather be naive and try to do some good than to be jaded and do nothing.

  11. Re:aol staying afloat on The Sinking Ship that is AOL · · Score: 1

the only thing about AOL that could possibly keep them going is their community atmosphere, I'm pretty sure that's the only reason it has been around as long as it has anyway. But, with other options for evolving a community (MSN instant messenger, ICQ, ICUII, etc... blah blah blah) that are just as free without the AOHell experience, maybe people are migrating for that reason. As far as cost, I used to work for a small PC outfit and we would get people who would come in fuming because they used a free AOL disc, but didn't bother to check and notice that AOL had no local dialup numbers, so they paid 1000 hours worth of long distance charges. Many of these people also called AOL before they used the free hours and AOL failed to inform them that they would be dialing long distance. Perhaps this is also indicative of their growing failure as an ISP?

While I agree with you in that the only people who have their hands in this are the ones with the bills (read: dollar) in their hands, we cannot continue to think that way. The idea that the only people who are making the laws are the ones with the the money or the ones who can give the money to the lawmakers is false logic. It is only that way because we, the people, LET it get that way. I said this before, but I feel that it bears repeating until everyone gets it in their heads. You can make a difference in this. QUIT BUYING MUSIC. See how long the DMCA lasts against a consumer strike on digital goods (read: CD's). And yes, I can bitch because I no longer buy music of any sort (nor do I download it)....

  13. Re:I've just realised something. on Why Software Piracy is Good for Microsoft · · Score: 1

It's not that dumb. MS can pick and choose who it goes after for piracy. They can let some piracy rings go on for a while before they take action. Others they can take legal action on right away. This would allow "some" piracy. Also, MS can benefit from piracy in that if they come across a site (say a small business), that has "accidently" loaded pirated copies of Windows, that company has to pay fines and then purchase legal copies of Windows.

  14. War Patents on Wright Brothers vs. Glenn Curtiss · · Score: 1

I think that if we went into a major war today, we would not see the same thing that happened in World War II. Companies can profit from war if they get military contracts. If a company develops a technology that the government can use, they (the company) would want to keep those ideas as close to them as possible so another company doesn't come along, develop the same thing for a cheaper cost. At any rate, selling to the military is big business now, and unless this hypothetical war went on for a number of years, like World War II, then I don't forsee anyone working together for the common good. Just look at the medical industry for many examples. Drug companies hold onto their research because they want to be the one that develops the cure for cancer, so they can sell it to the world.

I agree with you on all but one point...we can do something about this. Whether it is not buying DRM enabled equipment for a year or so, boycotting those vendors who sell DRM equipment and software, or finding alternate venues. There is always a way to let those with dough know that you are not happy with what they are doing. The real problem lies in peoples' dedication to a cause. Sure, many people talk about how they dislike Sen. Hollings maneuvering in Washington, but how many have written to their Congressperson to let them know how you feel. Many people grip about the RIAA, but do not boycott CD purchasing. When was the last time you saw a group of people picketing your local Virgin Megastore? Things can be done to stall and/or kill corporate maneuvering, mainly..don't buy into it! Unfortunately, not many people are left with the resolve to do so...
