  1. 10 years too long on CSIRO Wireless Patent Reaffirmed In US Court · · Score: 2, Interesting

Considering the rate of innovation these days, a 20 year patent period is far too long. A good first step for patent reform would be to reduce the length of patents by half or more.

I actually went back to the original style safety razor, the one with big square razor blades, where the only thing you replace is the blade itself. It works great, but I think the biggest advantage is that it hardly takes more effort to go through a week's worth of growth than a day's, and it won't get clogged up in the process. 10 double sided blades cost $1.50 too.

  5. Re:What should NOT be done. on How to Hack the Vote and Steal the Election · · Score: 1

That's a good point. Sometimes people forget that everyone else doesn't think like us, and I would say that most people in America would not think like people visiting a tech news discussion site. Maybe the best legal course of action would be to file a class action lawsuit against Diebold. There aren't very many companies who have sold millions of dollars of useless junk to various government entities accross the US, and they should be held responsible for that.

After reading some of the replies, it is obvious that electing an actual politician, even from an obscure third party would be a bad idea, it was just the first thing that popped into my head. It would probably be best to elect someone who isn't on the ballot, perhaps CowboyNeal or Mickey Mouse. Then they would know that the election was rigged. Leaving a backup might make it too easy as someone pointed out, so forget the backup and make them run a second election. That should get them to fix the problem.

  7. What should be done. on How to Hack the Vote and Steal the Election · · Score: 3, Interesting

The quickest way to get the system changed is to create a scandal by actually stealing an election. I would suggest making a Libertarian, Green, or other 3rd party win the govenor's race. That should make it pretty obvious. Then the person who hacked the election should send letters detailing what they did to a major newspaper and the state election board. I would also suggest backing up the real results so that no real harm is done. That should get us secure voting machines by the 2008 presidential elections.

I would suggest that you build your own windmill. You should be able to build one with similar power for under a $1000 (I think), or maybe a bit more if you need to buy tools like a welder and such, but then you have an excuse to buy tools too. Check out Other Power for more details.

What the people who are worried about this don't realize is that particles with over 8 orders of magnitude more energy than this have been striking the Earth for billions of years. If these sort of collisions could destroy the Earth, it would have been gone a long time ago.

  13. Why should there be shadows? on No Shadow From the Big Bang? · · Score: 1

It seems to me that there should not be shadows from the big bang, because all the bits of interstellar dust should be in thermal equilibrium with the CMB by now, and thus radiate the same microwaves. Unless I've missed something, this would seem to cause galaxies and galaxy clusters not to have shadows.

Seriously, skip the loans. It does not make sense to take out loans so you can keep some money around to invest. If you go to a financial advisor (one who's not out to make a quick buck) that is what he tell you. Right now student loans are running 7-8% interest, and while you could get 11-12% from something like an S&P index fund, there is always the possibility that it could be down when you decide you want to pay off your loans. Also, you shouldn't invest money in the stock market that you don't plan to leave alone for at least 5 years.
