It's neither possible nor impossible until someone observes it. If it's impossible nobody can observe it in any case. It follows that the only case in which there is uncertainty is if it's possible. Because we are uncertain, it must therefore be possible. But if that is the case, there is no uncertainty. We can therefore conclude that the only thing we can be certain about is that we are uncertain.

And how is this good news? Once a scientific theory is established, we should ignore any evidence that may disprove it because it has become the accepted truth? I don't see how teaching evolution as "the truth" is significantly better than teaching intelligent design as "the truth". Science is not dogma.

Presumably reflashing the BIOS is normally performed by code within the BIOS. If you can corrupt the code in the BIOS you would have control over the flash programming, so could prevent the user from overwriting the infected blocks. I doubt this refers to physically removing the PROM and reflashing with an external programmer.

Nineteen Eighty-Four is a classic dystopian novel by English author George Orwell. Published in 1949, it is set in the eponymous year and focuses on a repressive, totalitarian regime.

The book has often been misinterpreted as an attack on socialism; Orwell himself had occasion to refute such claims, both privately and in public.

Perhaps you should set about editing these pages, as the people who wrote them are obviously as clueless as me. While you're at it, the page on Brave New World doesn't yet have a treatise on the book as a criticism of facism, so you might want to fill that in too. Personally, I don't see any connection with facism in brave new world whatsoever.

  8. Re:Translation on Chimp Found Plotting Against Zoo Guests · · Score: 1

1984 was about Socialism "IngSoc" gone crazy. Of course it was totalitarian, but totalitarian is an extremely broad characterization. Communism or Socialism are more descriptive of the actual type of government.

So, saying 1984 was about totalitarianism is to miss the vast majority of the point. Brave New World was, likewise, about totalitarianism, but when you state that as if it meant anything of interest of value it, again, completely misses the point.

You should really read the book again. The fact that the government regards itself as socialist is neither here nor there. If the goverment was facist in nature, do you think the book would have been significantly different? The book is about the effects of a government exercising absolute control over it's citizenry in order to achieve it's political ideals, which you will notice are not at all socialist or communist in nature. This is totalitarianism. If he had wanted to portray a true socialist state he would have made it classless.

So presumably we should all still be using RS232 for everything?

Apart from the obvious advances in technology which make protocols obsolete, different protocols are better for different tasks. In general there is a trade-off between high bandwidth and low latency. There is also cost versus performance to consider, and performance versus flexibility. USB, for example, is great for what it was designed for - a low cost general purpose interface for computer peripherals - but it's very inefficient at large burst transfers, e.g. disk drive access. A lot of new protocols get developed because the existing ones are far from perfect - some of these don't work as well as expected, or just don't get adopted because of market forces. Hence the large variety of protocols.

... and to answer your first question, wireless USB has almost 500x the peak bandwidth of bluetooth.
