  1. Re:Consumer A/V devices suck! on Remote Controls On The March · · Score: 1

Yeah, this is exactly right. I set up a universal remote for my parents, but sometimes they don't aim it correctly, or the battery is low, and it will miss one of the devices. This confuses the heck out of them, because either the sound doesn't turn off, but the picture does, or the next time they try turning the TV on, one device goes on, and the other goes off, and they come running my way, completely befuddled. What really needs to be done is make each device have a seperate off and on button. That would fix all the problems.

There is no lack of oil at reasonable prices. Even with the recent price spike, US gas prices are lower in inflation-adjusted terms than they were during the "Oil Crisis" of the late-1970s. Prices would be a lot higher if we were running out of oil.
Ah, but the problem with oil is that it is not priced with the knowledge of how much is still in the ground, like other limited resources. So far, we have only been given educated guesses as to how much available oil is still in the ground. To give an example of the worst case scenario, the price could stay the same right up until the the wells start drying up, because we just don't know how much is really left.

Whether or not your monitor supports the resolution or not, this still does not mean that it can fully support 720p. It has to do with the length of the electron guns in your display. I cannot find the best source for this information anymore, but there used to be a page that explained the issue. Basically very few HDTV displays currently can display 720p correctly. 720p is MORE DIFFICULT to display fully than 1080i. This is the best I could do here:

"And if I can go completely geek on you for a second, there are very few HDTV's out there that can support 720p properly. Most HDTV sets have 7" electron guns, and they are too short to give a full 720p picture. So even if a TV says it supports 720p, if it only has 7" guns, you're missing some of the picture. Not a lot, but enough to shortchange you on what you're supposed to be getting. If you want a real 720p picture, make sure that your set has 9" guns. Most other sets will "downsample" a 720p picture into 1080i."

    Oh, and this:
Batteries will store energy received in daylight hours to fly all night.
Then, batteries will store energy received in nightlight hours to fly all day...right? Uh no.

So....seriously, depending on the time of year and where they circumnavigate, say they get 12 hours of daylight; how is this thing gonna get 24 hours worth of flight out of that? I would be very interested to know.

While I agree that they are no longer worth PRODUCING at some point, retailers still hold stock of these processors if they haven't been sold. These retailers would rather make SOMETHING on what they have already paid for, then not sell them at all.

But then there is a counterpoint to this. A couple years ago, when Pentium 4 processors had surpassed Pentium III sales, there were stores online not willing to drop their prices on the forced-to-be-expensive-by-Intel Pentium III's of 1 GHz and higher. It got to the point where even though they were not selling any of the III's, the retailers were not willing to lose any more money on them, and it got to where these Pentium III's were not even worth buying for UPGRADING (in other words, it was cheaper to buy a new mobo, ram and P4 proc).

Now I do know that Intel themselves placed higher prices on these procs, SPECIFICALLY to drive the newer Pentium 4's into the marketplace, but I really do wonder if these stores ever sold their stock of PIIIs, or if they are still stubbornly leaving them on the shelves.

And if you do the rom transfer from the cartridge yourself, I would assume this would be acceptable as well now. I understand the flaw in that analogy, but consider that it is only in the ease of mass-production where "intellectual property" differs from "real life goods". The amount of mp3s able to be produced per year is, for comparisons sake, unlimited. The amount of cars able to be produced per year is still limited. Hypothetically, if it got to the point where it was possible to mass produce cars as easily as it is mp3s, cars would become an intellectual property of sorts, and I guess we would be sitting here arguing about the illegal copying of copyrighted cars. My analogy is only there to compare the morality of it, and so "whether it is right or wrong" is what I was trying to get at. Yes, it is hard to create a valid analogy in this situation, but regardless, I still think that just because one wouldn't ever buy something (whether it may be because he just can't afford it or for some other reason), does NOT mean that he should be allowed to have it anyway.
