  1. For 8-bit nostagia and masochism on 101 Free Games for 2008 · · Score: 1

One of the hardest games you'll ever play: I Wanna Be The Guy.

A real throw-back to when games were hair-pullingly difficult, its a simple platformer filled with tons of references to old NES and arcade classics, like Mike Tyson's Punch-Out and Ghouls and Ghosts. Its surprisingly addictive, too.

Along this line, does anybody seem some unknown band on this service that I and other readers of Slashdot should listen too?

Anything that increases musical horizons is good.

On that note, I would just like to say that I am pleased to see that The Wrens are on there.

  3. North vs. South on The Crossing - A New Way to FPS? · · Score: 1

Does anybody remember the old NES Civil War-themed game North vs. South? It had a bunch of mini-games, one of which was essentially a basic side-scroller with one player trying to run to the end of the level (a fort, I think) controlling your usual videogame character: can take quite a few hits more than the common bad-guy, has longer-range attack, etc.), while the other player had a twenty weak (one-hit and you die) characters who he could throw at his opponent one at a time (essentially having twenty respawns). The second player's goal was to kill the single commando-guy before he reached the end of the level.

Anyway, essentially what it boiled down to was it was pretty fun getting to play on "the other side" as the weak but well-numbered cannon fodder. I can see this idea, if done right having the same feel.

  5. Re:Question 6 not understood - or lacking on Answers From Lawyers Who Defend Against RIAA Suits · · Score: 1

If NewYorkCountryLawyer in fact reads the above comment and wants to respond to it, I'd just like to explain that by "leecher" jafac means some one who downloads music but does not share it back -- he essentially answered this in question #3 and basically said that yes, leechers are safe.

I'd also like to say in regards to BitTorrent:
    1) BT in no way anonymizes you -- at least, the standard implementation does not. It is trivially easy to see the IP addresses of those who you are downloading from.
    2) In standard BitTorrent downloading, the seeders are people who by definition have the complete file and if there are no other downloaders or other seeders, you will in fact download the entire file from them (thus of course missing the real advantage of BT, but it certainly does happen)
    3) Lastly, BT is very "social karma" oriented, and for a reason -- Azereus complains when you try to remove a file you haven't seeded a fully copy back to the swarm, many torrent sites with user logins track the download/upload ratio of their users.

Why would people want a hip computer? You don't carry it around in public with you, you don't flash any iconic white earbuds on the subways with it.

Certainly there are some people who want stylish hip everythings, but there are some people who like those hideous Paris Hilton toy dogs.

Most people just want a computer thats just not completely ugly that they can stick in their home office or den and use. Thats why those black Dells sell so well (or at least one reason).

I still think this is a good move, and that Apple will sell a lot of these computers, but I feel like some of the people on this board are stretching it a little.

  8. Re:What is wrong with the current tools? on Yahoo! Releases Desktop Search Tool · · Score: 1

Yeah, I haven't fully understood what the recent crazy about Desktop Searching has been. Sure, there's a number of people who have a good use for it, examples I've read by other slashdotters in other threads, but seriously, how many people actually need this? The windows search tool isn't great, but its certainly been enough for the couple of times I've actually had to search for a file in the last couple of months. And I have a buttload of files: well over 200 gigs. Most people barely fill their 10 gig Dell laptop hard drives. As for the other uses for GDS: email searching? Every email program does this, and good enough. I don't really even want to get into the other features, they all are along the same lines, except for the text-searching, which grep and yes, windows search tool do too. Maybe not as good, not as fast, but how many people do that often enough to make it worthwhile to install a whole new program to do if for you?

What I'm saying is that while I certainly can see a use for this for power users, I don't see enough whiz-banginess for all these big-name companies to start pour vast funds into. I just feel like these articles should be about some no-name freeware software from nonags.org or a geeky open-source project from sourceforge. Does grandma really need this?

I don't have wine installed or any linux games, so to play a game I have to reboot my computer and wait for Windows to load up. Now of course, if I really am set on slacking this wont stop me, but for those "just a 10 minute break and then back to work I swear moments", its great. Now with this program, I'll be even more productive! Bye bye slashdot!

(Albeit still well after some of you old-timers who remember when text-based games were "teh hottness".)

More on topic, I also remember getting grossed out by the blood when watching my dad play wolfenstein 3d (specifically how your little face icon would get increasingly more beat-up as your health decreased -- how awesome was that, you didn't even have to look at a health bar to know how badly you were doing!)

Of course, a few years later when I played Doom with my friends, there simply wasn't anything cooler than shooting a barrel with a bunch of enemies around it and watching that glorious two-second animation of them turning into bloody mush. The sound effect that accompanied that animation is still one of the most satisfying sounds in videogame history. =)
