I've always found it strange and a bit sad that women seem to put up even more unobtainable goals for themselves than men even want them to.

Going way OT now, but I find that this is a symptom of tabbed browsing for me. I love tabbed browsing, but I do have a tendency to middle-click on far more links than I ever intend to read...

Just yesterday I saw someone in a post who had mirrored some data across three servers and put up links to each of them, saying afterwards "three mirrors, to combat slashdotting" & somebody responded: "Sorry dude, I opened all three links in Mozilla before I read the rest of your post..."

Um, and to say at least something on topic, my personal feelings about this is that this would be something that would be intended to be carried under one's arm, rather than in a bag or backpack like a laptop, but would be too heavy to carry for too long... but maybe I've got the wrong mental picture of these things, which I can't correct b/c the server is slashdotted.... =)

    4) Root around in the KDE menu system looking at arcane (to me) program names.
    5) Find volume control - don't remember the name, but it starts with a "K" :)
    6) Discover that, by default, all sound is muted.
    7) Un-mute sound. Sound now works.

  11. Re:Too much complexity on Capturing Gaming Feel Not All About Complexity? · · Score: 3, Interesting

Just to another voice to the complexity sliding scale: I used to get all the big-name RTS titles like Warcraft II & III, TA, Homeworld, etc., but would always find that about half-way to 2/3s through most games the complexity of the games got to high -- too many units to manage, to many avenues of attack -- that the games became no longer fun, either because I was losing all the time, or contantly pausing (Homeworld became a pretty, 3D turn-based game soon after the Gardens of Kadesh for me, even though its a game that many consider to be 'easy').

Anyway, what I'm trying to get at is that not only are there many differences between people for their tolerances for complexity, but people themselves frequently have ranges of tolerances that can change over time. I've recently gotten very much into Morrowind after nearly giving up RPGs a few years ago, and I love the open-ended 'choose-your-own-adventure' feeling of it. Of course, the last game I really enjoyed was Call of Duty, which is so linear and focused that the game even tells you "You cannot open this door. You will never have to open a door in this game." the first time you attempt the cliched FPS "try every door to find the one that opens to the next room" technique.

The most important thing, when it comes to complexity, is interface design. Homeworld had incredible interface design for the first true-3D RTS, but apparently it still wasn't enough for me, as I would frequently lose entire squadrons of fighters that could only be found with frequent use of the 'pause' button. But I don't want to go off into a rant, so I'll leave this comment off now.

Your use of the word "formula" is interesting, as movies that are primarily focused on a "formula" (and I mean in a positive way) are the ones that are most likely to have a good sequels of the sort games have. The best example would be the James Bond series: we don't want anything stunning or new from these movies, because they have a winning, well-honed formula (read: gameplay). We'll accept a new James Bond movie every couple of years that may be very similar to its predecessor with minor technological upgrades (cooler gadgets, bigger effects, better film quality) (and no Sean Connery vs. the rest flames, please). The James Bond series is of course an extreme example, but you'll find that many of the best mainstream sequels are ones which have a very popular, repeatable formula. (which is why, in hindsight, the Matrix sequels were doomed. we all thought that the formula for the first film was the kick-ass action or the philosophical underpinnings, when it really was that sense of awe and discovery that the others were unable to repeat).
