The stated purpose of most laws, including gun laws, is the intention of reducing crime.
However, we have been given precedent, at the highest levels, that maybe laws (or the constitution) don't matter, if your intentions are good. For example, see how politicians try to satisfy the intent of certain rules, while ignoring the letter of the law.
Seems to me, a law abiding citizen ignoring a few laws that aren't intended for them are doing less harm than those politicians.
Sorry, I thought I had a joke there, but my mind seems to be failing with age. Anyhow, that sentence fragment amused me, so I am quoting it out of context for my own enjoyment. Consider this reply my contribution to randomness.
Although I understand most folks do use dihydrogen monoxide in their evaporative coolers and misters. Not that is scary stuff! I sure wouldn't want to aspirate too much of it.
It seems to me a lot of lawsuits come down to "what are the damages"?
If someone steals a physical item, how is its value determined - retail or wholesale? The "actual damages" are a lot lower than the retail price of lots of things, but especially phone service.
Most military and government equipment only looks cool from afar. Up close, it looks like hammered dog meat.
If you don't want to shatter the illusion that high tech stuff has the fit and finish of a fine automobile, you really don't want to see it up close and personal.
On the other hand the sense of history can't be duplicated...
You sound like it is a bad thing to take money from NY and give it to other "loser" states.
However, from the wording of your post, I suspect you have no qualms about taking money from "rich" individuals, so that politicians can dole it out to losers^h^h^h^h^h^h "the needy".
While I don't doubt AT-Robots was a "funner" game for you, I do seriously doubt the average, needy 13-16 year old recipient of the donated computer would find it so.
I'm not saying there aren't needy nerds, but I would go with the odds and suggest that games that don't involve too much thinking would be much more fun for them. (And there look like plenty of winners, listed in other threads.)
But what the hell, toss some stuff like that on there too. Maybe put it in a folder called "keep out" to get them to look at it.
The US Constitution, on balance would be no worse off if every amendment after 15 never happened, especially the 16th.
Of course, the Constitution has a history of not standing in the way of politics... for example, H. Clinton might very well be the next Sec State, despite constitional prohibitions> , as that clause has been ignored before, as if lowering the salary lets the new Executive squeak in under the intent of the law rather than the literal law.
I am just waiting for the day an average Joe is let off the hook for a crime, because he didn't intend to break it... thereby not violating the spirit, if not he actual law.
For example, if I carry a firearm, but not for criminal purposes, should I be ok? I may break the letter of the law, but not the reason for the law...
CheckFree, what can I say? At least now my Nigerian account can be linked in and I will finally get my cut of the money that I fronted 1% for, to get it out of the country...
heh, thanks for reminding me of Retief.
I need to dig up my old Keith Laumer books and flip them over to my kids. They read everything.

I once had some memory that did snap and crackle, then it wouldn't pop any more.
we are quickly running out of entropy

The result is called your average voter.
Maybe even a multiple voter, in Chicago.
print each frame as a still picture on good quality archival paper.
Did they also rule out long whiskers? Or perhaps other unsightly hair. A blind person might not have the best grooming habits.
(Am I going to hell for posting this on Christmas eve?)
You realize we are talking about water, right?

This is an interesting legal point.

Yeah, but if it is a van made in India, it is probably about the same size as a US "compact" car, so the car analogy holds.

But for those that do need to be on paper, you can save 20% just by using a 10 point font instead of a 12 point font!

ask me how!
There is already an illicit marijuana distribution system in place that would still exist, if just to avoid taxes.
If you think marijuana laws are bad, I'll bet being popped for tax evasion is a far worse crime than getting caught with a joint or two is now.
So you don't like wealth redistribution?

...banks created all these funny rules...
I think you meant to say "banks created all kinds of workarounds to funny rules that politicians created"

I propose the "recycling zone".
You start with two guys who have lots of (pick some) brains, luck, tenacity, etc...
As you add people to the enterprise, generally you will pick up "normal" people and experience regression toward the mean.
After that you bring on the bureaucrats to wrangle the herd and it goes down hill from there.
A decent Perl distro for Windows is free.
vim works perfectly well under Windows.
If you can't find a replacement for the others, look at cygwin to run many more *nix programs and utilities... including a real shell ("cli").
You can work around many Windows shortcomings and end up with something that works for you.
You need more than one copy of your data. At least one of the copies needs to be off site. If this is not the case, it is not backed up.

CS != programming.
The current "professional tools" for programming change. The fundamentals of CS, much less so.
Knowing the CS helps you select the proper tool. Many tools actually hide the CS from the programmer.
