I think Google's really hit the nail on the head here. Google works, it's gonna be tough for MS to overcome unless they just do it a lot better, and that's pretty doubtful. What they need to do is concerntrate their efforts on the next big thing, rather than trying to outdo Google at what it already does.
This guy I used to work for used his iPaq to make him appear to be constantly busy. He refused to turn off the crazy sounds because its sole purpose was to inflate his perceived importiance to the organization. Beep! I'm importiant. Buzz, got 1000 things to do!
This is the same guy who came into every meeting jabbering on his cell phone before saying, "I've got to go, I'm in a meeting. I'll get back to you", slamming down a huge briefcase full of worthless printouts and filtering through them before settling down and pronouncing, "Ok, let's begin."
He was a master among masters. Never did anything, but his bosses deemed him invaluable.
Dude, lay off the guy, he's a phD!!! Not only that, but he speaks Latin, that much is apparent just by his sig! Who knows what else he's capable of? I don't see any credentials in your sig, just a link to some proof about where your numbers came from... Just who do you think you are buddy?
Large companies like to keep things the way they are. One of these days, some punk with a million dollars will start a web based TV network and light a fire under all the major television networks.
Radio stations became TV stations when someone decided to invent the TV. This is just another step forward in technology and eventually it'll drag the big companies along with it kicking and screaming.
I don't know about this idea. I mean, people come out of the woodwork when a pizza is nearby, scrambling for a free piece of the pie. Then you'd just have to explain that you have a laptop in there anyway, and the thieves would overhear you and steal your pizza box with laptop inside and you'd never get that sorted out with the cops.
YOU: "Well, it's a pizza box, with a laptop inside." COPS: "Why did you put a laptop in a pizza box?" YOU: "It's not a pizza box really." COPS: "I thought you said it was a pizza box?" YOU: "Well it is, but it isn't. see?"
Plus, you would look pretty silly walking to work with a Pizza box every day.
I also worked with Virage for archiving our video broadcasts. We used to create the archived clips by hand, slicing and dicing the files up. Virage saved our guys a lot of time and made our site a lot more functional.
Did you use the Perl interface? I ended up writing a Java based package that made XML calls to their server. At the time it was experimental, but keeping it all running under weblogic was nice.
I was very happy with Virage, and thought the same thing when I saw this article. Wonder if Google should just buy Virage?
No man, I get you! I think the thing with Apple is that they use the best stuff, which, as you pointed out, is overkill for most people, and always more expensive because the components are new.
I wonder how much a PC would cost if you used dual 64 bit chips from AMD, top of the line Nvidia cards, etc. I wonder if they would come out at about the same price as the dual G5 or not...
Oh, and why was I modded "Offtopic" on that? I was just responding to you...
I my work machine is a Dell and it's fairly equilivalent to a top of the line G5. The prices are about the same.
You're getting a really crappy dell for 700 bucks (with screen). Everything on the MB and shared memory. You really can't compare that to the higher quality innards of the mac.
I realize this program is new, but I'd be very interested to know how many of these students get gaming jobs after graduation. I tried to break into the industry for a while, and came close a few times, but it's a very hard thing to do (looking back I'm happy with where I am now). If this program (and/or others like it) can prove itself valuable to game companies such they their students are quickly snatched up, it would remove a major hurdle for interested developers.
Bottom line seems to be that nobody is going to be switching over to MSN Search from Google anytime soon.
The bottom line is not quite so overcast as this statement seems to imply. None were negative, but most mentioned that this is beta quality and had the potential to tackle google in the future.
I mean, if you're giving it away for free, and you don't feel like working on it anymore, why not just open the source and allow it to continue to grow?
I'm happy for you. I wasn't maligning the community college aspect of it, but the problem is that someone who is responsible for a family and obligations (debt? cars? child support? etc) cannot afford to spend 2 years in school, even if they make 500 dollars a semester.
You might say that he should have saved better, but that's just not the reality that we are looking at today.
"That's why I'm such a big fan of Community College!"
Woo-Hoo, that guy should just go to community college, then he'll be able to find another great job. Isn't it so great when everything is so black and white?
Damn dude, you are bad! I can see you in the store now, crowd of Best Buy employees (Besties as we call them) standing around you, shouting, insulting your wardrobe, ridiculing your taste in fine bargain house electronics. You stand, resolute, solid, refusing to give ground, waving your coupon and your rebate form with an air of intelligent superiority.

Then your iMac Mini will be about as valuable as a melted iMac Mini! This will give a whole new meaning to the Rip, Mix, Burn media campaign.
that's a great idea! I'm sure it will involve temporal shifts or something stupid like that though :(

His second head, in the movie, is in his nose (so you can't see it). Seems like a cop out to me too.
Apparently you haven't been keeping up with your news for nerds: Perhaps you will be around... So Start Caring!
The guy who wrote this for the Morning News maintains a hilarious blog. One should be so inclined to check it out at www.defectiveyeti.com
Just think of all the murderers that will be walking the streets after they serve their consecutive lifetime sentences! OH THE HUMANITY!
very cool, thanks for the reply!

I bought 30 shares of AAPL at 26 dollars early this year. I did it because I like their products and I like their direction. So far, I'm up over 100%.

I'd like to know where that number came from?
So... what is the difference, exactly, between "the future" and "not anytime soon"?
Syntactically not much.
The difference is in the connotation.

Buy on dude, buy on!
One consipiacy theory suggests that this is the reason the exit polls for both Florida and Ohio showed Kerry leading.
I'm not sure I subscribe to that, but it's interesting.
