    Well, if a picture is worth a thousand words, then you've got 4 pictures for 4,000 words. Basically it says Google followed by a description of the vulnerability, where to go to patch it, and a brief history on why you should switch to a more secure operating system. Yes, in 4 chinese characters.

    They are not doing this to make you mad. They don't want to interrupt your dinner.

    Of course not, that's why they call between 5pm and 7pm on weekdays and Saturday instead of say.. between 9am and 5pm during "normal" business hours.

    If they could catch you at your most inconvenient time, they would.

    Don't you mean convenient time? They already catch us at our most inconvenient time. For me that's between the hours of 9:01am and 9am.

    In fact, if they could tell without having to call that you were not interested, they would not make the call.

    I have an idea: What if we setup a national do-not-call list and everyone that doesn't want to receive telemarketing would put their phone number on it. What? They didn't like that idea? It doesn't sound like they're interested in my convenience anymore, just their profits.

    The answer is simple. Do your research. You'll find out that Verisign is owned by a bunch of very-well-connected people that seem to know their way around Langely all too well.

    Ding ding ding. We have a winner. Verisign sounds like basically any other government contractor. It's probably comprised of a lot of ex-civil servants who retired from their old high-power jobs in the government to take big contractor jobs with Verisign for much higher pay. Since they're still known around the government circles they're worth far more than non-government contractors would have been.

    Bah, forget it. Reloaded comes out on DVD on October 14th. At least I can watch it on my projector and get some theater-like experience before catching Revolutions.

    Gosh, I was kind of hoping they'd release Matrix Reloaded on DVD before Revolutions came out. I didn't get to catch it in the theater so now I won't be able to see Revolutions in the theater or I'll be completely confused. :-(

    Open source software packages are following closely behind with their "major root exploit of the week" tracking database. OpenSSH, OpenSSL, Proftpd, sendmail, etc. Jesus tap dancin Christ!

    Most people don't realise this but America's space station gets smaller all the time. Russians always design their space stations for three. America's Space Station Alpha was supposed to accomodate around 20 people. Since 80s it is getting smaller and smaller. ISS is nothing but a glorified Mir Mk2.

    Hence the OTHER major problem with the ISS. The notion that it's "America's Space Station". ISS=International Space Station. If it was America's Space Station then you can be damn sure it would've been finished by now. Since it's the "ISS" we had to wait around for other countries to finish their modules while in the mean time single-handedly propping up the Russian space agency with US tax dollars. The ISS is about politics, not exploration or science.

    Ah, thanks. I wonder if Aragorn will use Narsil to cut the ring off Sauron again. Such questions. Anyone know of a good spoiler site or is the script kept pretty well locked up tight? (BTW, don't tell me to go read the books, I'm not interested in anything but Peter Jackson's interpretation of Middle Earth).

    As an aside, I've installed BeOS on every laptop I've run across (to me, the ability for an OS to run successfully on a laptop is the ultimate test of the capability of the OS) and I've found far *fewer* laptops that BeOS *cannot* run on, than I have found in regards to *nix.

    When I tried it, BeOS didn't even support my Nvidia GeForce 256 card in anything but black and white low resolution mode. That was probably 3 or 4 years ago with the BeOS 5 personal edition. I obviously never took another look at it since the GeForce was THE best card to have at the time. It's amazing a supposedly multimedia OS didn't support it. Worked fine in both Linux and Windows though.

    What's a Narsil and who is Elrond? Aragorn is the tall hippie guy with the beard right? I guess I could've read the books, but I didn't want to spoil the ending of the movies. I wonder if it's a trick ending and good loses and darkness washes over the land. That'd be really cool.

    A big company like Verisign can make a huge difference (1-2%?) simply by moving their domain parking facilites over to a different platform.

    No biggie. ALL unregistered domains now run Apache on an unknown OS (probably Linux) according to Netcraft now. :-) Apache is the undisputed king with 99.9999999999999999% of the possible mistyped domains.

    In all seriousness though, do these people really get hurt by movie piracy? I would imagine they get a salary and not a percentage of the movie revenues. Why would they care if somebody pirated the movie? By the time it's hit the screeners he's moved on to another job. It's not like people are going to stop making movies because of piracy, so who does it hurt besides rich movie executives and actors pulling in a percentage of revenue?

    Jabber IS a uniform way of sending messages on a network, not to mention open source and unencumbered by one company controlling it. I have never understood what people see in instant messaging that we didn't already have in a more open format with IRC, but hey, I'm open for improvement.

    Jabber seems to satisfy their "instant messaging" definition, but people still try to jury-rig a client to connect into AOL, Yahoo, and MSN. They're just hacks and these companies have made it abundantly clear that they'll never cooperate with third party clients willingly since most of them strip out advertising. So why play with them at all? Trillian should concentrate on being a completely kickass Jabber and/or IRC client and stick with open formats.

    The trailer in cinemas now will be released for download on monday. Of course, there is a leaked version which is pretty low quality, but still it is STUNNING. Return of the King is going to ROCK!

    Not to threadjack, but... feh. The Twin Towers wasn't particularly good in my opinion. As I go back and look at the FOTR I find it was boring as well. When is someone going to do an interesting modernized fantasy movie like around Dragonlance or the Forgotten Realms world? I just have this issue with these wizards supposedly being so powerful yet never use their magic. Where are the fireballs? Can they at least give us a measily magic missile? Tolkien's wizards are completely weak. Raistlin would've kicked all their asses.

    Oh god, I am such a dork to say that, but it's true.

    I think Apple's original strategy with iTMS was to create a cool premium service that you coudld get only by buying a Mac...then later launch it for windows in order to capitalize on the whole market.

    And if Apple had used the FLAC format or some other lossless format unencumbered by DRM baggage they would've been even more successful. As a Mac user I've NEVER visited the iTMS and have no intention of every buying anything through there. If I want crappy lossy recorded tracks I'll download them from a P2P network. If I want to actually BUY a track then I'm going to get the perfect CD quality version at the store.

    No, to compete with Apple you just need a rabid fanatical customer base that is content at paying higher than industry average prices for average electronic equipment.

    I agree that keypresses saved are minimal, if not sometimes nonexistant in simple equations. In fact, for many simple single-operation equations, the process of learning RPN is far too complicated to justify using it at all.

    You can take my HP48GX when you pry it from my cold dead hands. The main advantage of the HP48GX and RPN in general is that I've never had it borrowed in a class by another student for more than 10 seconds. Meanwhile I can watch with a bemused look as they try to figure it out. Then they give it back and grab someone else's lame TI.

    At this point it should be made very easy for this woman to sue the RIAA, but without the resources of a large corp. it is just going to seem like an impossiable task for her. Thus the lawsuits from the RIAA will just continue with the harassment and scare tactics.

    Correct. I guess what we need at this point is tougher penalties and stricter enforcement on the part of the government. The RIAA shouldn't be suing people in civil court, the government should be pulling these people in for massive criminal sentences. Have 1000 pirate mp3's? Go to prison for 10 years.

    Good answer. Someone is abusing something, so let's just scrap the whole idea altogether. Let's see how this idea applies to other things: Someone is using a computer to steal money from a bank. Abolish computers, and this won't happen ever again.

    That's a flawed analogy. You wouldn't abolish computers, you would abolish money. Without money there would be nothing to steal.

    But irc isn't unmoderated, we have botnets and generally (outside of the occasional EFNET DOS) have pretty good control over our channels. Oh you meant THEIR control...

    Are you insane? You can't just have unmoderated instant global communications networks without SOME kind of government regulation or corporate oversight. What do you think this is, 1995? It would be anarchy! IRC channels would be filled with child molesters and pedophiles, copyrighted material would be sent back and forth without the owners' consent, and the government would be unable to effectively monitor your communications for terrorist activity.
