    No it wasn't. More like the late 1960's. Just because you didn't start using the Internet until 1994 doesn't mean nobody else was using it. People read e-mail, chatted on Usenet, transferred files with FTP, telnetted to other machines, etc. all before 1990. Saying the Internet was born in 1994 when Mosaic started becoming popular is stupid. You might as well say it didn't become really REALLY popular until Napster was born. Free music on the Interweb!!

    Arrrgggghhhh! How could I have so foolishly said The World Wide Web? It's nothing compared to the tasty wholesome lean goodness of a George Foreman Grilling Machine grilled burger!

    You have to admit, before the George Foreman grill it was basically impossible to make a hamburger indoors during the winter. Sure you could throw it in a greasy pan or use a skillet, but it just sat in fat and grease. George Foreman is a true hero.

    If you have bothered to look at a map you'd see where our military force is "busy" on either side of Iran. Seems to be a perfect position to be in for an invasion. Bush is a tactical genius IMHO.

    Agreed. People that release security announcements, especially a root exploit on Friday around 5pm should be shot. Now I need to wait around for 2.4.29 to come out so I can update my shell server. Son of a bitch.

    If I were Tivo, I'd try to set up deals where shows can be distributed over the Internet via a BitTorrent-like protocol.

    Hahahaha. I stopped reading after this sentence. There's no way in hell the MPAA or networks would ever allow that. ReplayTV was almost sued-to-death over their show-sharing over the Internet support which is why they had to drop it in new versions. What I'm wondering is why MythTV and other free PVRs haven't stepped up to bat and come up with that BitTorrent sharing thing. ;-)

    A G4 with 256MB of RAM and an 80GB hard drive and a combo drive is a very low-end system. They could easily put it out there for under $500. The software of course costs nothing to them since they're just bundling their own OS and Appleworks, iLife, and some game demos, etc.

    Again, this is a 'switcher' box. Most people already have a crappy PC monitor that will do fine. Over time, HDTV's will become more ubiquitous and perfect for this as well (DVI out).

    Speak for yourself. I have a nice 21" Dell flat-CRT monitor that I have no interest in getting rid of for an LCD. :-) I will probably pick up a sub-$500 headless iMac if they really come out with one just to throw it next to my PC.

    Except Thinksecret is saying the headless iMac will feature a G4 processor. They're quite a bit less expensive than a G5. Their lowest system (around $750) is the eMac and already has a G4 with built in monitor. I don't think the $500 price point is that far off for those specs.

    They could, but they won't. I'm betting the price will be between 700-800 dollars also.

    Then what's the incentive to buy it? You can already get a G4 system WITH a monitor for that price, it's called an eMac. Remember, the headless $500 iMac will feature a G4 processor, not a G5 according to Thinksecret.

    $500 isn't inexpensive, I can get a Dell system WITH a monitor for less than that and it includes Windows and an office suite. Try again Apple.

    I remember the only semi-major thing I noticed were all the bulletin boards using a certain software (don't remember what it was) all of a sudden started displaying Jan 1 19100. That was kind of funny.

    the word "wiki" has always put me off. I didnt' bother to even visit a "wiki" because that word reminded me of things like "flooz" and "Beenz" - useless marketing words that meant nothing and weren't creative. According to Wikipedia, Wiki wiki comes from the Hawaiian term for "quick" or "super-fast." Doesn't seem to be a buzzword. Now, wifi and blog are buzzwords and need to die, but wiki is fine in my book.

    Sorry I always forget the regular SA Tivo's have this enabled but DirectTV wont turn these features on for people. tivocommunity.com has plenty of links in the forums to enable features that are locked on DirectTivo's but they're not for the faint of heart.

    So you can technically do things with the TiVo that other products and open source software can do, it's just incredibly difficult. That's a glowing endorsement of TiVo. ;-)

    Haven't you wondered why TiVo is getting so much press about this when ReplayTV already had these features?

    Not at all. Especially on Slashdot, people seem to have blinders on that TiVo == DVR. They even use TiVo as a verb. I really don't understand it either since there are other alternatives to TiVo like ReplayTV or even free ones like MythTV. Why do people so vehemently defend TiVo even when they do stupid things like announce wanting to put commercials on while you fast forward and openly oppose copying the shows off your system in order to archive them? BTW, "Hacks" don't count, that functionality should be built into the system to let you copy the digital movie format off the hard drive and transfer it to your PC with little trouble.

    Sure, they MAY become ASPs (doubtful), but who do you think will supply the software these companies run to supply services to the users? Microsoft. They will make server licensing comparable to retain their current profit levels so nothing will change.

    Oh, come on! When will the submitter realize that stableis what most of us want to run on our servers and mission-critical hardware.

    Unless you need to run PHP4 in which case, the last time I checked last week, they were still arguing about whether it was even a necessary package, much less whether to update it in order to fix a major vulnerability. I've been using testing on my server for months now and it's rock solid. It's nice having fairly up to date packages vs. stuff that the author doesn't even have on their web site anymore!

    Maybe I lose a CD I like, and I want to hear it again.

    Then you have to buy it again. You should have made a backup of it. If a CD has copy protection then there should be a means of getting another copy for free in case the other one is lost or damaged.

    I guess that's the first thing I thought of. Why would I make an international call? For the life of me I can't think of a single person in another country than the United States I have ever called. Weird. If I wanted to communicate with someone in another country I guess I'd just use e-mail or Yahoo Messenger voice chat.

    Which is why there are only 79 /.ers signed up. When they get the Linux client, they'll get 79,000 /.ers.

    Actually that's a good point. I installed it for 5 minutes until I realize my Windows desktop is in standby mode 95% of the day so it's kind of pointless. If there was a Linux client I'd throw up a nice'd copy on my Linux file server and my MythTV backend server which run all the time. Oh well.

    I've noticed lately that more and more spam is making it past our DSPAM installation. Spammers are getting craftier by the minute.

    But to what end? If I've went to all the trouble of implementing an anti-spam system, the chances are just around 0% that I would buy anything from a spammer. So, why do they even bother trying to get around anti-spam filters in the first place? Clearly the people DO NOT want their spam and have taken active efforts to block it, yet they continue to try and circumvent the systems. Where is the equivalent of a DMCA law for e-mail? Circumventing an anti-spam device should be punishable by 5 years in prison and a $100,000 fine.

    No, it's designed to defeat bayesian filters. If you're sending out millions of emails, and making a tidy profit, you don't want to lose that profit. So every once in a while you send out a million emails that are worthless crap, blank, not really selling somethings, etc. to confuse the filters. Then you send out the next wave of spam, wash, rinse, repeat. See, what I don't understand is how any court in the entire world would uphold that what these people are doing is a legitimate form of commerce. They are crapflooding my inbox. If I went over to a judge's house and dumped my trash on his lawn they'd haul me away to jail, yet spammers do this to my virtual residence every day.
