    so their plan is..

    1)Create new layer between bios and os
    2)Say it helps when your OS crashes
    3)have it log system stats so users can see what went wrong
    4)Re-invent all the kernel-logging utilities
    5) Profit!

    seriously folks, a graphical kernel logging utility would be pretty handy. you could have it start after a crash instead of kdm/gdm/xdm, so you can find the problem before you go under again.

    whats a bios? in all the newer computers ive seen that havent been built by the users, there is no bios. when i finally got into the bios on a friends compaq, it took twenty minutes for me to look up the "security codes" so i could change his boot sequence.. most users dont know what a bios is, so it might as well already be dead

    there was, (or still is, i dont remember) a distributed computing project to map out all possible end games, and put them on a local internet server. the point being, that anyone with a large amount of disk space could access the perfect moves for end game. when i last heard, they were up to 7 pieces on the board, and each combo fit compressed onto a dvd.

    In my public school (k-8 in nowhereville, maine) the sysadmins quote is "my steak bomb comes before this computer.." the school uses macs primarily, with one windows/linux dual boot box. I had to pull hairs to get support for setting up the dual boot, even though I did it all by myself. In any case, it works nicely and runs off of a cron-compiled kde3 cvs snapshot.. The teachers love it, once they actually used it they apologized to me. Just give the common person a chance and they will see the right thing.

    When I was in Japan, where everyone has cell-phones and very few people (I staw) had decently powerful desktop machines, if you didn't have a phone you were toast. I thought it was all kinda stupid, and typing kanji on those stupid little things is nuts..

    You mean you're supposed to solder it? Jeesh, when I tried to put my hard-drive in, there was this one peg, that didn't have a corresponding hole on the cord..aren't you SUPPOSED to pull that one out? Computers these days..

    Yeah, Blizzard's Diablo II was pretty bad there for awhile. It took the "Pindle Revolution" for me to wake up and stop playing. Of course by then, I had only paid for the copies of the game and 3 months worth of WineX. No big deal. The downside is that Warcraft 3 is out and its pretty cool....
