Wrong buddy. Usually jobs are cut because an organization has gained too much
fat and costs are too high. Cutting is a means to regain the competitive edge.
If a company doesn't optimize costs, competition will and the company goes bust.
Usually lower level jobs are optimized because there are so many of them and
the (mass) processes involved can be optimized.
My experience in IT is that operators and code punching jobs (where designers
supply VERY detailed classes/methods/COBOL-programs) are easily moved to India.
Analysis, architecture and design jobs are more likely to remain because these
require high(er) skills and complex social communication. Hotshot Indian workers
don't come at 1/10 of the price of local workers.
That doesn't mean job loss is tragic for some of the concerned workers. But
individuals have a responsibility at developing skills in order to remain
competitive. Also, smart people loosing jobs tend to create new opportunities at
making money.
All large/huge organizations I have worked for have exactly these issues you mention. This is mostly about human nature. Not about political inclination. And maybe a tiny bit about culture. After six years of working you should have figured that out. Maybe by taking your eyes off the monitor for a couple of moments a day.
That means the voltage of batteries usually behaves more constant than that of capacitors when discharging. This surely has it's repercussions through the power lost at the power management units.
I like the tape recorder saying stuff in a female voice like "What a nice set ballpoints you have?!", "Obesity makes me hot!" and "With you, olfact is what it should be in a mate selection process."
Got to get myself ready. Am I allowed to see a PS3 add without having to license one? Have to be careful about them free newspaper I get at the train station.
Can Ordinary PC Users Ditch *nux for Windows? No!!!
I like my *nix distros as they come. Vanilla Fedora with Gnome is good enough for me. Any other valilla distro is fine with me. I believe I could even get to appreciate Solaris and Java desktop.
And don't let me have to configure twm because I cannot be bothered.
So, I'm an ordinary PC User and I wouldn't know what to do on a Windows box. I would have a hard time running Cygwin just to have a normal shell. Also, the Windows path names make me feel uncomfortable. I would have a problem ditching *nix.
So the other way around is identical. Only a few weeks ago, my sister-in-law remarked that I should make the leap and try Windows...
I remember. People telling people to RTFM. And most people not RTFM.
I tried Nautilus years ago when it bombed constantly. So I never actually used it.
Now I'm pointed at the two options that make it work (view as list and open in browser) I
might actually use it. And when my wife calls with a problem I can refer to it.
Thanks again to woz and jobs for coming up with the finder concept.
Sure, CPAN is a collection of stuff that works. And you can hack your way around with the modules.
The think that irritates me horribly is that the Perl name space is guarded by a bunch of dickheads. I know. I am -was- a CPAN contributor and gave up on it because of this. I refuse to waste my time over name space issues.
Any other Perl modules I'll distribute will have my domain name as part of the name space. Something like Org::SpaghettiPattern::SuperDuperPkg. Or, I might distribute Java code like Org.Spaghettipattern.duperduperpkg.
I like the way Sun is keeping java.* and to an extent javax.* reasonably clean.
The Java class library size doesn't bother me. What would bother me is that I would have to select every trivial package I need in my distribution.
Also, when was the last time you reviewed Perl code?
What Ferrari will do is go into electric car business. It's a racing car manufacturer after all.
Once the technology is there, it'll be possible to have a very light weihgt motor on each wheel. Provided batteries/cells will be lighter, a totally new concept will be there. Imagine the curves you can make with alighter, more powerful car.
It 'll be like with foto cameras. The most experienced manufacturers will rule after the change. Getting a car to behave well on the road isn't easy.
I hope the nervous system constitutes a discovery protocol of some kind.
It'll be something like:

We want cheapness! Even at being cheap.
make 10-15 per cent of employees redundant

Don't worry guys, those usually are the bean counters. People that do real work usually aren't fired.

...a computing center as big as two football fields...
Is that in FIFA or in American football fields?

There's a grey zone between good and bad. Somtimes, if you stick too much to being a goodie, someone else will take your place and be a real bastard.
In Google/China's case, MS might have wanted -and taken- the huge Chinese market.
What would have been the most evil case? You never know.
Nothing ever is completely good or completely bad.
And please leave the completely good/bad examples.
Anyone any chair jokes?
I like Nintendo but this sounds like "Nintendo penis enlargers". Or how about a penis like a flame torch? Or a hammer? Or a tongue like Joshi?
The list is endless.
OTOH, knowing Nintendo the adds will probably be non-intrusive.
I have a rosary backup policy. My prefered saints to pray to are Mary, Don Bosco, St. Ignatius of Loyola and St. IGNUcius.

How 'bout fora? Should this posting be taxed? Don't I already pay VAT on the ADSL connection I use?

and you'll never be lost on any Unix-like system. Trust me.
It's Daniel Wallace' not Daniel Wallace's.
Essential commands are not working. I mean, try ^[:wq or even ^[ZZ to write and quit. I tell ya, worthless junk!

I have a similar remembrance of the day.
It was on a Sunday if I recall (I was all of 9 years old)and I slept right through it.
Yeah, I was a bit older but I too slept right through it.
I kept waiting for the predicted ash fall, but it never got as far as Seattle.
Me too and it never got as far as Amsterdam.
Just kidding. Don't take it too serious... And don't touch that mod buttttoooooonn. Aaaargh.....
I couldn't disagree more.
