I have no idea exactly what Bram intends to do, but there are so many pro-business uses for Bittorrent that I'm amazed nobody's really done it in a major way. It would be nice to see a really good real-time audio/video streaming implementation. Alternately, it would also be nice to see some plugins for apache and/or FTP servers that allowed people to download in mass quantities and share the bandwidth with everyone in a more normal way. In other words, there's no reason I should have to have my desktop on to share/seed a torrent file.

I was thinking about this recently and it is a tough one. I assume a US carmaker would jump on this, though I'd rather see KITT 2.0 as an Audi since the convertible Jag is too pricey (unless you buy used, since they fall apart fast). So what that leave us with today? Mustangs? (God please no!) The new Dodge Charger? (Ick) And Ick goes for just about anything GM these days, though I do kind of like the look of the Solstice (though it is only a two seater and I don't think that would work for plot reasons). Someone mentioned that the talking robo car was cool in the 80's and that wouldn't work with today's politics and fears (though I thought the Superman movie suffered from that big time). I think the bigger issue is that today's cars are just mostly... 4X4 automatic transmission super minivans. Super shield or not, I can't picture little KITT going head to head in the desert against Lincoln Navigators, let alone an H2 or something. So does KITT then have to be an SUV too? Maybe a Ford Fusion! That would kick so much ass!

Actually somewhat seriously, I recall seeing on tabloid TV some thing about Jim Carey appearing in porn (or at least a B-Movie) before his career really took off. Not sure if this was pre Living Color or not. Anyway, they showed him covering himself up most of the time while walking around naked in some group sex scenes. Very strange.

I am by no means an expert on Linux, but I have this stuff working on AMD 64. However, not the way you might think. To get firefox and plugins fully working, you need to look up the instructions on getting Firefox32bit running. There are install scripts that work, but follow them to the letter! AMD64 is more trouble than it is worth in some cases as binary-only (32-bit) things like flash and java create some really bit headaches in 64bit browsers. I'd point you to the instructions on this if I could remember, but if you search the forums on ubuntu and kubuntu (which I'm running) you'll find it.

  14. Re:Not true/My Fios Copper Line Experience on Verizon Copper Cutoff Traps Customers · · Score: 3, Interesting

Actually in seriousness, I did the research and was sort of informed that my copper would be shut off. I told them that I didn't want the service unless they left my copper lines alone. The Verizon folks agreed. However, to them copper left alone, meant converting my phone lines to fibre anyway and taking the phone company box with them!!! I called and complained and they said my copper lines were still there. Yes, soft of true. I was extremely pissed off to say the least.

There are 2 problems with having your copper lines switch to fibre. Aside from the obvious vendor lock-in, fiber telephone service isn't going to stay on for too long if your power goes out (they don't run their own generators to keep it going unlike with copper). (We have terrible power here near Washington, DC.) My wife and I work at home. With two of us using the phone, the batter backup on their router won't stay going for long. Plus batteries age!

So if you want reliable phone service do what we did, change local service on (at least one) of your phone lines to another company. It took months to get a Verizon guy to actually come over and rehook one of the lines up and a ton of bitching. So my advice is DO THIS STEP BEFORE GETTING FIOS! However, I don't know if it can be Sprint anymore (that's what we used) since Verizon bought Sprint. If you use another local carrier they have to work via copper.

If you have another local carrier, you can still get Fios. Apparently, they then have to bill your credit card. There really should be some class action suit about this stuff. It is nuts. However, Fios is still pretty darn good Internet.

  16. Re:for always and eternity on No OLPCs for Cuba, Ever · · Score: 1

I'm a Canuck who's lived in the US for the most part. I find the anti-American thing really odd actually. Sure many Americans are a-holes, but Canadians rarely know where most of the a-holes are from and assume we all wanted Bush "running" the country. I found it really funny when Buffalo was in the Stanley Cup and my Canadian friends were cheering on Dallas!?! Dallas couldn't even sell out their Stanley Cup games and is also more or less where GWB is from (along with many other A-holes). My relatives constantly pick on the US, but when given chances to take jobs in California they jumped on that in a second. They all assume we're super rich. (Not even close, especially compared to some of them.) There's a strange jealousy going on. I'd rather be living in Canada for many reasons myself (health care, clean air, 4 seasons, winter sports). But if Canada is so much better, why do people constantly feel the need to put down Americans to make themselves feel better? Pretty pathetic actually. Oh and by the way, Canadians aren't any better at geography. My 60-year-old Aunt (who is a teacher and has lived near Toronto her whole life) thought that Buffalo, NY was 1 hour or so away from NYC. Come on! Then again, my relatives make me want to sever all ties to Canada. I want to go on vacation anywhere they aren't going! They can have Cuba. ;)

  17. What about Rebates and Coupon Codes? on Puncturing the "PCs Are Cheaper Than Macs" Myth · · Score: 1

I just put together a new PC with Case with an AMDX2 for well under $350. Case and 500 Watt PS were free (rebate came back a while ago). Mobo and Chip ~100 (integrated 6100 NVidia). 2GB (2x1GB) 800 mhz RAM for 45 (after rebate). AMDX2 3600s aren't top of the line, but you don't have to pay much more for a C2duo these days. $125 for a 500GB 7200 Perpendicular Recording Drive from Seagate (not the cheapest around, especially if you don't mind IDE instead. (Granted no new monitor.) Did splurge on an overkill heatsink ($35 after rebate) as I'm tired of the old PC heating the upstairs office in summer. Hell, if you are patient enough it is probably possible to build a completely free after rebate PC. It probably won't break any speed records or run Vista, but that's a good thing. As far as laptops and full systems go, if anyone shops at Dell.com without coupon codes they deserve the crap they're getting. Oh and people buying 17"+ laptops/DESK replacements for $2,799 or $3,459 I mean are well... hmmm... the best customers! I have land in Florida! (Why the hell are 17in laptops so friggin popular? Do you any of you who have one actually take a train to work and use them regularly during the commute? I thought so. Buy a desktop instead.)
