Perhaps Google can actually afford to pay users this time around, but still. The former MP3.com CEO has shown little ability to actually turn a profit wiht any venture he touches. However, it is proof that Google will then go on to make their own version of Linux. Maybe they'll call it Gindows or Ginspire.
However, at least for some printers the turboprint drivers are not free for full quality printing. Also, there is some work on reverse engineering the scanner drivers on cannon multifunctions (this is where I give HP some credit as their multifunction printers mostly work on Linux), but it is pretty hit and miss. However, HP printers suck despite working on Linux. Turboprint give you low quality printing, though you can network from a Windows machine to Linux and print with full quality with the free turboprint driver.
THat said, Cannon still has the best stuff these days. Epson beats them slightly on print quality, but their customer service sucks serious ass.
That on the Mac could get me to consider a Mac... Seriously. I know on the audio front many love Pro Tools, but I can't stand it. It was always bloated and slower to work with than Cool Edit (personal experience). If Adobe release that for Mac (which they don't seem to be doing yet), that would be a big deal. Unlike Premiere, Audition/Cool Edit is an excellent alternative (better imo). I also wish the Ardour folks would do a Cool Edit skin a la Gimpshop.
Now there are 2 other stupid ones, of course, but give me a break. I saw her talk about alternative energy and she was completely uninformed (in my opinion). That said, she did look hot in Splash.
It is based on reading candlesticks (look that up) and ideal info for the swing trader. As with any of these things, you have to know when it is out of whack, but candlesticks have been used for centuries.
I actually download TV shows on occasion (gasp in horror!) and a media PC/myth PC would make some sense for me, but the economics don't really work out either. Media PCs with Viiv or AMD Live are pricey to start out. I'd prefer a smaller ITX thingy so I could hide it, but those PCs lack horsepower.
So it comes down to this...
Reliable DVD recorder $100-$200 that "just works" and using the laptop for Mame and watching downloads instead.
or
$500-$700 for an itx setup that might be flaky, annoying and underpowered just so I don't have to reach for the laptop for Mame and watching downloads.
Uhhhh no thanks.
(Tivo is not an option as I hate monthly fees.)
I assume it has to do with performance royalties. AM/FM radio were legally grandfathered in to avoid those fees. Webcasters do have to pay those fees and I assume they feel satellite radio should pay up now too.
because it doesn't account for what a system can do. Look at PCs for instance. The old IBM PCs sold for over $3000 back in the 80s depending on your system and what it did. Also, add in what today's faster (and cheaper even without inflation) computers can do and it really is amazing. The interesting thing to me is that the console market does get more expensive (leaving out inflation) when these things should be either staying the same or getting cheaper.
For consoles though, there should be another graph representing fun to compare against inflation as console power is less important than the games it runs (unlike a PC).
Right on!
This could be the thing that gets Grandmas blogging. I don't think it is a must have by any stretch, but it is a good move. Even if it isn't a reason to buy, MS could make it work with some MSN blogging thing that links readers and authors to Microsft's relevant advertising network. Nice extra income stream, even on pirated software (assuming they don't send the software police after you). Smart move if you ask me.
See my other comment in this thread regarding HP Officejets. Yes scanning works, but the HP MFC printers suck in every other way. I got sucked in by that Linux support thing (which is nice), but I recommend steering clear of the Officejets.
In response to the comment about why not use X printer just beacause it supports Linux...
First off, I used to buy only HP printers. A year ago I bought an Officejet 7110 to have the ability to print AND scan in Linux. (It didn't fax in Linux, but 2 out of 3 ain't bad.) Scanning from Gimp in Linux was fantastic for bulk scanning projects. I really miss that. However, the printer was never quite right (as in flaky). The print quality (when working properly) was identical to the HP printer we had 4 years earlier. Finally the whole thing crapped out right after the one year mark. I did some research and found out that Cannon had the best all around multifunction in my price range (Pixma 780). I can't scan in Linux which pisses me right off. Cannon won't provide drivers for printing. I think that some CUPS drivers supposedly sort of work, but I downloaded proprietary drivers from Germany that only let me print in draft mode (though are fine as a shared printing device using Windows drivers from another machine).
Just noticed today that there are hacked scanner drivers that I will have to test out... http://pixma.schewe.com/
Anyway, I based my purchase decision on... Cannon Lower cost of printer, Lower cost of ink Better print quality Fax really works all the time! scanning in Windows only (for now) Printer is rock solid
vs. HP Most functions supported in Linux Lesser print quality Fax half-worked (has this annoying power save feature that has it crap out after about 8 hours of idle on a UPS that cannot be disabled) More expensive ink Printer was flaky more expensive purchase price for printer
I think most sane people (not necessarily on Slashdot) would agree that full Linux support isn't everything if the product still kind of sucks.
OH and to reply to my own comment. Does anyone else feel another Internet stock bubble coming? I can't wait.

Tesla doesn't use batteries. He's A/C not D/C!

Soon our oceans will be much cleaner thanks to extra tires!
I love looking at flying shits!
I'd settle for an Accord cake.
Apple hardware is made in China too. At least the ipods are dropshipped from Shanghai
Imagine a computer as smart as our president!

SpeedswitchXP. Okay so that's meant for speedstep and powernow, but still.

Whoever he is, there's no way he can beat the Hulkster! Granted, Hogan is a little older these days.
"...making blinded capacitos out of economics"
So there is a use for economics!
Yahoo Finance is very good. Not perfect, but far more useful than Google's.

I got really ripped off on my computer purchase at an S&M store!! It was fun though.
