Yep - I believe that Nintendo actually want to produce great games. Yes, they want to make money, but they want to do that by making games and game systems. Microsoft want to own the market. See the difference?

The one good game for the XBox (Halo - the most anticipated game ever on the Mac) was actually hijacked and re-ported to XBox. Even then, it seems entirely dumbed down and less innovative that what was shown at the MacWorld preview.

Nintendo is complaining because Microsoft doesn't really care about the quality of the games - it's not going to be a battle about who has the best games for their platform, it's going to be about "features" and "performance specs".

When I write about Microsoft "dying" (and I think Michael Malone means it in this sense too) I don't mean in an Enron style of explosion. They're not moving fast - they can't achieve their goals, they are influencing what happens in IT less and less. They've become so protective of their OS in it's current form that they fail to realise that other technologies may start to supersede them.

They know this too to some extent - hence their mad rush into a wide range of offshoots (ala XBox). They've been outflanked, and are trying to change strategies rather than developing from a solid position. In my opinion most of this comes from not embracing Open Source in some way.

Of course they'll still be around, but Motorola is still around too and chugging along happily. They're just not out to rock your world anymore. They're a follower, not a leader. But like the man says, maybe you have to die first to be reborn. In Motorola's case this may be as Freescale. With Microsoft...who knows.

No - they have a lot of assests. And "investments". In cash they are about equal with Apple. Have a look at their quarterly earnings.

Now granted, even with that amount of cash they're not going anywhere fast. But that doesn't mean they're not "dying". In IT dying means that you're not leading - companies not leading or competing for the lead in their respective fields (processors/memory/OS/cases/etc) are as good as dead. It just they way it is with IT.

I think many of us have known Microsoft is dying for a long time now. When was the last time they released anything truly innovative? Word 5 for Mac?

Hell, when Apple publicly makes jokes like "Redmond: start your photocopiers" when previewing OS X, you know you're so far behind that you think you're coming first.

    iTunes has both these capabilities.

    1. Requires airport express. You name the Airport Express(es) as "Living Room", "Kitchen", etc. You can then select these from any wi-fi Mac and stream to each one (ie - push). Airport Express has digital audio-out, BTW.

    2. You only need one central music library really. You then share that library with iTunes. Any other copies of iTunes on the network (Mac or PC) can the see that library and any playlists on it, and play music from it. I haven't noticed any lag when playing music shared this way, even over wireless networks even with 3 or 4 people sharing.

If you require true synchronisation of multiple libraries, then a little rsync is your friend. Here's the options I use to keep my 2 libraries in sync (note: I only add music on one machine, so this is a one way sync) - I'm not sure what Slashcode will do to the following, so you may have to remove spaces...

    rsync -v -r -C --ignore-existing --rsh="ssh" /users/my_local_account/music/itunes me@myserver_name_or_ip_address:/users/my_account_o n_the_server/music/

The one thing that iTunes lacks that annoys me is the ability to remotely control another copy of iTunes (like on the server) from my laptop. I actually have a script to do this through the shell, but I'd really like to be doing it through the iTunes interface.

Although I wouldn't claim to be reading at the forefront of evolutionary theory, there is quite a common understanding now that evolution is not a constant ongoing process for most cases, but rather happens in quite fast jumps or leaps. Or rather there is a slow on-going process, but most of the action happens in irregular spikes.

Although I wouldn't have the faintest what the exact process is, these jumps tend to end with a number groups rather than a myriad of individual variations. This seems to be more due to 'chaotic process' rather than anything specific to evolution.

Your point about the dogs would probably challenge this evolutionary theory if it wasn't for the fact that there are very very few real 'original' dog breeds. Most dogs are the product of centuries of human-controlled breeding for specific traits. The sheer number and variation of breeds is really due to this than any evolutionary process.

I'm sorry, this is just not true. Lots of people here have a great crack at Mac fanboys for them looking past Apple's fault - but you have taken this a great step further for the windows team.

What you're saying -might- be true if all you're doing is turning on the computer, typing an email, and then turning it back off. However, if you're using Windows (yes, especially XP) for any extended period of time (like more than 24hours) with multiple applications open that can stress then system (like cad/image editing/video editing/etc) then you will experience lockups and crashes fairly often. And it's not just because these other apps are 'poorly written'. It's easy to have an app lock up effect other apps, the whole system, and even crash Explorer (ie the desktop/window manager). The OS should not be letting this happen.

Most people just accept this as part of the game, recognise when Windows has 'had enough' and reboot. This doesn't mean it's good, right, or that windows is 'stable'.
