I find it funny how nature itself defies the "survival of the fittest" theory. I mean so much of nature is dependant on other parts of nature. e.g. many plants that are totally dependant on animals for pollenation or transport of the seed. They even seem to be engineered to attract the right host to enable the transfer of the pollen. Whereas evolution theory would imply that to survive things would evolve to be less dependant on factors outside their own control. Our ecosystems are so finely balanced that it doesn't take much to screw the whole ecosystem with the introduction or removal of one factor.

Think about it. The GPL is price-fixing: the price is set at zero (or thereabouts). It's funny because it's true. It's right because it's true.

Wrong. There is nothing implied whatsoever that the software price is or has to be set at zero. You can produce and sell new software under the GPL at any price you like. People who buy it can resell it as-as, modified or incorporated into their own works for x times the price, or give it away even. Price doesn't matter. Price is not implied or restricted anywhere whatsoever. The requirement is the release of the sourcecode under the same GPL, and the making of it available to whoever buys/receives the product. The distribution of the source-code for free (plus maybe the cost of media) is the only part with implies price.

Two things that I have seen first-hand:
1). Indeed not all ID scientists belief in a 6000 y/o earth.
2). Not many darwinists (that I have met) objectively look at other theories. Most show the signs of religious attitude and defensiveness when their belief system is questioned.

All scientists (incl evolutionists and ID'ers) should be open to the following concept:
"If something is true it can stand being questioned, if it is not true it needs to be questioned".

Geez I wish I'd read this 3 days ago. I bought an ATI tv wonder pro thinking it had ok driver support but in my haste, I didn't realize the "pro" part of the name implied it had a completely different chip inside, the os driver is barely a hello world program, and of course ati driver support is shit.

Yeah man. I bought an ATI Radeon 8500DV because it had a reasonable chip, TV encoder, real-time h/w mpeg encodering, teletext, firewire, etc. What a POS it is. I get rhythmic static coming through on all Nicam Stereo channels (using a roof aerial even) which makes the TV unwatchable. The problem is not there all the time, occasionally it will be fine. No logical cause that I can locate though.

Their MMC software is flakey at best. Locks up, poor setup, etc, etc. Upgrading your drivers even to the latest WHQL drivers cause major nightmares. NEVER again will I buy ATI, or another TV tuner card. A box-top DVR with HD will be the go.

I wrote a long rant at ati.com but the session timed out before I could submit and now I'm all pissed off and now am seesawing between trying to help write the driver and just jacking out 150 on a different card.

Yes! Yes! I know the frustration. It happened to me. I had a couple of tickets open at ati.com. One issue was with their 98SE drivers which could not install properly. After frustration I upgraded to XP. They closed the ticket as being solved, yet upgrading OS when they should've fixed their software is not a solution for everyone.

There is currently no PVR software that allows capture to DVD. The ones that offer DVD burning, do it after the capture. Time consuming, not convenient. You still can't get close to the convenience of a box-top DVD recorder.

Also, just don't buy a TV card (or AGP card with TV tuner) made by ATI. You'll have nightmares with drivers and ATI software like the rest of us ATI users do.

I see what you are saying, and realize it may be a concern for some. But CALs we can handle. A full desktop OS installed, we do not want. The specs on the clients would be minimal to re-use older hardware, without having to upgrade every machine in our organization to run XP efficiently.

I've been waiting for a bootable CD-ROM that does only this:

1). Detects simple hardware i.e. video, mouse, lan, enough for 2D X Windows.

2). Gets an IP address via DCHP and generates a unique computer name.

3). Boots to a Remote Desktop login screen without needing to know beforehand a list of computers. Simply, the same as MSTSC where you enter the username, password and computer/server name/address.

This would cut down many licenses and make Windows thin client networking a breeze. I guess there are numerous systems that can do all this, but either they are complicated to setup, or have extra stuff that is not wanted (i.e. an entire operating system and desktop apps). A simple MSTSC bootdisk would be ideal.
