...oh, and I should say, I AM aware of the fact that there are already a number of similar models already in existance for internet technologies. I just don't like it. : /
totally centralizing anything. No one company or organization should have complete control over the practical functionality of something as pervasive as email technology.
Also, a note on things you may be able to take tax deductions on:
A percentage of your rent if you lease or rent, or of your home loan interest if you have a mortgage.
A portion of real estate taxes and interest cost "above the line" (before payroll taxes are calculated)
some depreciation for the office part of your home
utility costs and trash collection fees you can attribute to your home office
maintenance and repair of your home office
household furniture you converted or purchased for use in your home office
As always, these depend on your situation... and DO consult an accountant every year! Often it's the best money you can spend.
I heard someone else suggest that some stores can supply regular mail addresses, but that is something you'd have to call on. I actually just pulled out the xerox of my LLC-5.5 (Illinois Limited Liability Company Act - Articles of Organization) paperwork, and the exact wording is "The address of its principal place of business: (Post office box and c/o are unacceptable.)". Similarly your registration with the Illinois Department of Revenue (NUC-1 Illinois Business Registration) reads "Principal business address: (Do not use a p.o. box number)".
It seems my memory is still functioning.:)
Particularly in the state of Illinois, this is not permittable. If you register with the Secretary of State as a sole proprietorship, partnership, LLC, LLP, or C-Corp you cannot use a P.O. Box as the registered business address. Note that in most places, you don't have to deal with zoning if you won't have foot traffic, parking, or signs. This works well for internet based companies like the one you're talking about starting.
It's the idea of all this legal action over internet behavior that scares me. I'd rather the network were a giant, dangerous wasteland... than the over-legislated political mess that it is. I'd rather find ways to block spam, than make more laws. I'd rather have to institute functional security measures, than see everyone who scans a subnet get arrested. I'd also rather people made better protection systems, than prosecuting the people that beat them.
I agree that our legal system can be compared, in the worst way, to a runaway train. On the other hand, the US is the most powerful nation in the world... and that kinda puts the 'world cop' job on our shoulders, whether we want it or not. I support our right to criticize how our gov. does the job, but I also don't think anyone else is more deserving or capable. The U.N. is both ineffective, and totally impotent without the U.S. and England. I wish it weren't so... I wish the U.N. weren't a failed model in world government... but it is.
First, NO country DESERVES superpower status. They take it. Furthermore, I never said that the system should remain as it is... or that we shouldn't fight for what we believe is right. Nor did I make a plea for government intervention. Finally, I think you might want to rewrite that last sentence... it wasn't very coherent.
Despite initial misgivings, I think perhaps the slashdot readers might want to consider supporting this person vigorously. If not to validate the person, to enhance the political might of her division. From what I see on this site regularly, the peoples privacy rights are going to hell in a handbasket... with nobody of power to actually slow it down. How well have our current representatives really done? Seems to me that they're worthless, or even part of the problem.
I agree with alot of what people suggest things SHOULD be like. But things as they are... the term fits. When I was in HS, my only motivation was being accepted to a decent college. It wasn't about preparing people for life, except maybe for the kids who took shop... and they caught shit for it.
I have this problem in a class now. ONE teacher has decided to correct the grade inflation problem. Now most of the students in this class will get a C that will hurt a GPA that is reviewed by people that EXPECT that your grades are a product of grade inflation. Until every teacher, and every institution commits to appropriate grading... you can't correct the situation without unfair damage to studets' academic careers.
...God forbid someone asks a stupid tech support question in the linux community, though. I see this all the time.
Someguy: "Hey, can anyone tell me why my soundcard doesn't work in linux?"
Uberprick: "Whut sndcard & distro"
SG: "Who's distro?"
Uberprick: "Whut kernel?"
SG: "huh?"
UP: "Fsck'n n00b."
Everyone: "YEAH!! I HATE THAT CRAP!!! RTFM ASSHOLE!!"
SG: - Cries himself to sleep -
The Upper Penninsula of Michigan also has a giant underground fungus. I wonder if this one tops it. Seriously, they sell t-shirts and other junk sporting "There's a humungous fungus among us".
I think we'd recreate what would start with higher standards... and swiftly gravitate to what we do have now. I think people are actually very comfortable with it. A system that functions on regular elections is apparently people-serving... even if I disagree with some of what everyone seems to want.
Oh, and this alarmist "Look at what's happening!" yelp that I hear so often is getting really old. You haven't seen anything that is actually new. The "Profits Uber Alles" is not a new US motto. To be honest, I have a hard time finding a point of view on this topic from ANY country that doesn't have likely subverted intentions. Frech, German, Soviet, Korean... all have noble and ignoble reasons to object. The U.S. also has noble and ignoble reasons to commit. I was with the age old paranoia movement up through, and including Palladium... but someone has to take a stand somewhere to remind people how it is.
but is there a legal file-swapping schema out there that functionally masks the participants?
Oh, I get it. Like the opposite of firewall rules. :)
I agree, this is an important point... it would have take the whole forum in a different direction. Someone please moderate his post to a 5!

If I were in High School, I know my parents would suddenly have very serious problems using their home computer. End of Problem. ;)
Uh, yeah... yay socialism. ??? WTF ???

Is there another nation's flag anywhere in the slashdot topics icon library?
It seems this now qualifies as "due process of law". Kindof a logical loop there. All it says is that you can't hold someone illegally. :)

/me dizzy. Were you saying that war is right, because Saddam wouldn't leave, because Bush made an unfair request?

Can we all pause in respect of a moment of clarity?

That is so weird. I never post anonymously, and I've never been persecuted by my government for it. I must be an agent.... BEWARE ALL!
