Mods please mod parent down. I have a via system at work and it's been running for months without issue, however my nforce3 based box here at home routinely has issues.
Which makes more money? Microsoft our apple? i'll give you a hint, it's not the fruit.
Oh and by the way, if Apple sold OSX for the PC, i know of 5 people right now that'd jump ship. Me included. I've tried this leaked version, and I'm already spending more time in OSX than in Windows...something i could never do with linux.
A simple solution:
GET RID OF SOFTWARE PATENTS.
Software patents totally hurt competition. Open source projects such as FreeDOS, ReactOS, FreeType, and Linux all either can't implement something due to patent issues, or are in violation of patents. Software patents are just ludicrous.
Anyone who's used Yahoo's Mindset beta search engine will quickly agree that google could use improvement. Often i find that when i can't find something in google, i do find it using Yahoo's mindset. Come on google, where is your answer to mindset?
DISCLAIMER: I don't like yahoo...hell I HATE yahoo.
FYI RealVNC can be used to remotely hijack someone's computer without their knowledge, that's why it's blacklisted. Sure tech savvy users know it's there, but what about joe sixpack, who doesn't even know what a VNC is?
In the past this would have been true, but compare the price of a top end mac to a similarly equipped PC and you'll notice that this isn't necessarily true anymore.
I've been holding back on upgrading for a LONG time. I Almost upgraded when PCI Express and DDR2 came about, but with the news that dual-core CPUs were just around the corner, i decided to wait for that. I'd prefer AMD over Intel.
FYI running on an AMD Athlon 2400+, MSI K7T-Turbo2 (KT133a chipset), 3 GB RAM, Geforce 6800Ultra, SB Audigy, Maxtor 80 GB special edition. While this PC isn't exactly a slouch in it's own right. (tends to outrun every machine i've touched, and since i do freelance computer repair, i touch alot of them!) I feel that new technology has passed me by and it's FINALLY time to catch up!
Bring it on!

Not really any truly great ones. Please note that trillian is bloated and phones home. I'd have to recommend GAIM, or deadaim (www.jdennis.net) + yahoo + msn, but the latest yahoo client is buggy.

Where exactly is it you get your (mis)information? A P4 Extreme will NEVER be $100, especially since it has a 2 meg cache. Memory prices are too high to allow this, and prices for memory are going UP not down. This is why certain CPUs have raised in price, not lowered.
And the athlon 64 3000+ is neck in neck with a 3.2 p4ee anyways, and 64bitness isn't just about memory, it's about more registers, the ability to manipulate larger amounts of data (larger registers) and in general all around goodness...
Disclaimer: I am not an AMD fanboy. I buy what gives me the most bang for my buck. For the past few years that has been AMD.
Actually, Sprint offers unlimited 'vision' service for $15/mo, if the pipe were wide enough (i think it's only 14.4 though) then you could technically port it to java and do this;)
Installing Software:
In Windows: Double click exe file
In Linux: Unpack source code, run configure, run make, run make install and pray that you have the right versions of various libs. Yeah, debian may have apt and redhat may have rpm, but the setup files that run on windows are universal, and install to ANY version of windows.
Changing settings for software:
Windows: Open convienent settings dialog, press apply or simply press ok to close the dialog when done, changes are applied.
Linux: Edit cryptic config files, restart app
Installing Drivers:
Windows: Double click the setup file, worse case scenario, open device manager and do things that way or right click on the inf file and hit install. Linux: compile the driver, possibly recompile the linux kernel due to a missing dependency. use insmod to install the driver. Edit several config files to get the driver to load. Even IF you get this far driver may not work because the kernel is 0.00.000001th of a revision off.
You can argue it's the software developer's fault, but forcing a user to compile EVERYTHING they use is a waste of time and no user will ever use an operating environment that promotes such primitive behavior.
Flame me all you want, i'm one of over a billion windows users, i also use linux, it has it's places (Servers) but it's NOT ready for the desktop, no matter what you may say/think.
The day you can install and run apps with the click of an icon on ANY distro, the day you can edit ALL aspects of your system via a nice GUI, will be the day that linux stands a chance.
I JUST put together a new PC on newegg for $190 + shipping. The parent is correct.
7.50/hr? Working for krogers 5 years ago i got paid 5.75/hour...
actually, current games only use ONE of the 3 cores. Games that use all 3 cores will not become available until later.

You've been on that road too huh? :P
Hehe, well, wait until oblivion comes out...i'm not a console gamer, but i'll probably buy a 360 just for that game ;)
Nope, it supports PostGreSQL, SQLlite, etc.
that has got to be the funniest damn thing i've EVER read on slashdot.

Hey don't shoot the messenger :P
wrong. Avalon is still part of Longhorn, WinFS was the only thing pulled.

his carrier is probably sprint. $15/mo for unlimited data.

and i love you intel zealots, you make MY computing cheaper (keep in mind that AMD chips are cheaper/have more bang per buck then intel chips)

These arguments get old after a while.
Reasons why linux isn't ready for the desktop:
