After three years of playing different MMOGs, if there is any one thing that I am certain of it is that all virtual economies are faulted by a common flaw: programs and systems have flaws that can and will be exploited, and that the artificial adjustments demanded to repair them never work, because at the very moment an artificial adjustment is required the naturalality of the economy ceases.
For an example, just look at the dismal failure that each "fix" was to Ultima Online's economy. As soon as the developers started "fixing" things, the economy ceased being a natural evolution, and instead a predictable system that the cheaters began to utilize. Anyone that did not make full use of each new exploit could not compete. Everyone left, and all UO is left with is about thirty or so thousand people engaged in an never ending cycle of beating the system. If Origin had just started booting the cheaters than they would still have a viable product.

Let's face it though, pleasing the public and sparking it's interest makes you money, and makes it more likely that people will approve your funding "just because". When you are dealing with things that are obscure to the public but are in reality highly critical, winning public approval should be a top priority. Just hire a few really good PR people, that's all.
Whats really sad is that I actually got out and partied tonight (the girl/ball and chain is away with family). What is the first thing I did when I got home (after taking a leak)? Post on Slashdot.
I am a sad individual. So are you. So are we all. Long live Slashdot.

Is it just me, or does NASA tend to drop bomb shells on the public out of the blue? Rarely are NASAs projects made *largely* public during progress, but rather only at fruition.
NASA might win more more public approval if they loudly proclaimed their endeavours while they worked on them. As it stands, only their failures get much notice.
The reporter wrote this story as if he actually broke it.
MSNBC: we have known about the relationship between spam, lead generators, and legitimate businesses for years now. For example, when I filled out an add to enlarge my penis 3 years ago, I got all sorts of emails from GNC and other well known health and fitness companies.....oh wait, I mean, when I clicked on the "See Britney Nude XXX HOT Angelina J-Lo-XXX-HOT!" offer I got an ad from her record label and WareHouse Music in the mail. Yea, that's it.
Nintendo posted profits of 50+ million in Q1 (11bn yen), and sold over 500,000 copies of the new Pokemon game for the Gameboy Advance, and well over 1,000,000 of the GBA SP themselves. The combined sales of Zelda: The Wind Waker and Metroid Prime were better then any two game combo of any other system (excluding the GBA).
Just look at sites like gameindustry.biz, gameshark, and topconsoles for more information. Or, of course, you could just review Nintendo's financial filings.
Nintendo is hardly struggling. They sold about a 1-2 million less console units worldwide than expected. That's all. I don't get all of the doom and gloom about the company, or the quick need to write off a system that is doing better then one of their competitors.
My buddy lost his nice tech job at a bank and has been running the PC upgrade and repair shop at the local CompUSA (for about 50% the pay, but hell, beats unemployment). Anyways, sales of Mandrake Linux constently beat Red Hat right up until Red Hat 8 was shipped. And all together Suse, Red Hat, and Mandrake has actually sold more then Windows XP since XP's release. Only the Windows XP upgrade and Office XP has sold more copies then the Big 3 of Linux.
I don't care if the excess light inhibits further evolution or causes intense sleep disorder - I just want to be able to use my $350 telescope without having to drive to the fucking boonies!
"The provider said safeguards were in place to protect civil liberties."
That's how it always starts. As more and more companies use it, and when corporations finally control it, those safeguards will slowly be peeled away in the name of security and efficiency - by then it will be so common that most of us probably won't even notice the loss of privacy at all, and others will even encourage it in order to help catch criminals.
WOW! What a wild and radical new advancement in technology! This is going to alter the landscape of computing! Things will never be the same again! The Information Age has just evolved!
Geez editors, this isn't techtv.com, you don't have to write adverts for Microsoft. Taco, how much do you earn for ads like this by the way?

I hear that you can avoid litigation yourself by leasing his IP for $699 for small auction sites, $1499 for sites utilizing 20 servers or more.
