You mean an "Apple Authorized" store, because the closest Apple store to me at the time was > 500 miles away, yet there were at least 5 places that had it in our metro area... Then there are places like Albuquerque, NM where there is not a Mac store to be found.... (Except 1 CompUSA)
The powerbooks also have larger/faster cache, and a faster system bus and main memory. I don't know enough about the graphics cards - but they are probably better in the powerbooks as well. Basically the new iBook looks like the first revision iLamp iMac specwise...
Over 2500 for two stories. This iTunes for Windows is at least generating a buzz...;) Can't hurt Apple. Heck, they even mentioned iTunes on the morning news today.
So then the problem is simply one of file format? I wonder what that could be, since the Windows iTunes supports AAC on FAT partitions - you would think that it wouldn't be a problem with the iPod. Or maybe is it just that they have not released an update program for the Windows (FAT) iPods? If that is the case, then I wonder what the HFS is giving the iPod software that FAT can't provide?
And now that WiniTunes is out - could you convert your iPod to HFS and thus get the new software version as well? Of course you would need a HFS kludge for Windows to access it outside of iTunes though...
What is the point of having RAM if you can't use it? Or do you just like to see that you have 800MB free? Heck then shut the whole box down, then it will ALL be free!
This hint at MacOSXHints.com has a comment regarding ripping from multiple disks. I know it is a Mac OSX site, and all that - but it might help. I dunno...
Really? My 1st generation player plays AAC files just fine. Is there not an updater for Windows? If not - I would say go to a store where they sell Macs and let them update your iPod software from a Mac.
quote from Jesus:/* Because the word "enjoy" does not immediately come to mind when the words "Linkin Park" are uttered, you can safely say you "enjoy" them just as easily as the typical Windows user by not watching them at all. */
Actually, if you take record sales into consideration - more people "enjoy" Linkin Park than "enjoy" Macintosh computers.
So your snooty attitude is not actually "Funny" but annoying... I for one, like Linkin Park.
That is not to say that you won't have options - there are all sorts of hacks to install OSX on unsupported hardware. But the requiremenst for a supported system say G3 or G4 Powerbook AND Built-in USB.
As it is, the performance of Panther is "Snappy!"(TM) which should help on older machines. Of course they might call the user switching "slow like molasses in january" user switching, if it takes as many CPU cycles as it looks like it would... And it might be faster for you to manually open and close all your apps than use Expose without a Quartz Extreme capable video card... But who knows? I haven't had a build running, and Those who have legally can't say anything until October 24 - so all of you pyr8s - any info on how fast the new features that look "heavy" are on older hardware?
Hmmm. I see almost no comments in favor of this. I am in favor of it, and I would support it locally with my own tax dollars...
But I have to ask - how many of the people responding even HAVE kids?
Everyone slams 6th graders like they couldn't handle a computer if it killed them. When I was in 6th grade I already had two computers. Now that was the 80's so I was unusual then, but NOW? They already know more about the computers than most adults.
If you treat them like they are too young and immature to have a laptop - then they will be. If you teach them and allow them to learn - they will grow and expand. Children expand to fit their environment. Too many people treat children like they are stupid because they are young. Lack of experience is NOT THE SAME as lack of knowlege. Kids are AMAZINGLY smart. And they will never GET the experience you all want them to have, if you never ALLOW THEM TO.
6th graders are perfectly capable of keeping laptops.
And why not start using technology in the classroom? As long as it is just a TOOL - and not the focus of the course, it is fine... What if people had said the same thing about pen and paper? "We already have chalk and slate. We don't need any new gadgets. Kids won't be able to learn." Technology moves forward, we should use the technology as a TOOL to move forward as well.
Give kids some credit - they need to learn and grow sometime!
Oh yeah, and in my opinion the iBook is more durable than most Dell offerings.
I have the same problem! Mine arrived the 3rd, ordered it the day they announced them. What bothers me is that all the G5s get the upgrade FREE, but the NEW Powerbooks are NEWER than the G5s!!! And the laptops are not even considered...grrr.
No bother anyway though, cause my laptop will fit under the family pack that I have to buy for my older machines anyway, it's just the point of it all. They should say - anyone with a computer that SHIPPED with 10.2.7 should get a free (or $20) 10.3 upgrade.
Apple started shipping ALL of their computers with USB around the same time. Those are the oldest computers that Apple is supporting Panther on. Thus it is easiest to say that they require the Apples with USB built-in, instead of naming all of the oldest computers that they support.
So it's not USB that is required - but the "spec" of the Apple computers that come with USB built in that is required.
I just felt the need to post because of all the noise in here.
I applied the original update to an iMac DVSE 500Mhz G3, and an iMac G4800 superdrive. Neither machine had any problems that I could notice, and none of the problems that I read about.
I have applied the new 10.2.8 to both machines with success as well, and as yet no adverse side effects that I can note.
Strangely, I just recieved my brand new 1Ghz 12' AlBook, and it came with 10.2.7 installed - which I had thought was just for G5s? I have updated it to the new 10.2.8 with no problems that I can tell.
All is well in Appleville for this little resident...
Exactly! I was gonna say - instead of providing gimmics like this, they should pick up the trash in and around the harbor. That might help attract tourists and customers! I have been all over the counrty, and Baltimore and the inner harbor was almost the dirtiest place I have seen (excluding New Orleans during Mardi Gras).
I don't know much about the crime rate, since I was only there one day . But the homeless people will enjoy the free internet access!
Seriously though, if the harbor were clean and nice, I would just go there to sit and work!
I have used several hotspots here in Portland, OR to just sit outside and enjoy the day while I am working on stuff. Not everyone using it will be on vacation...
I don't know if anyone will read this, it's a bit late. But the Linksys upgrade hosed my network, and I had to downgrade to get connectivity back. And not just OSX boxes, Linux and Windows as well.

I have 2 machines upgraded, an 800Mhz G4 flat panel iMac, and a 500Mhz G3 iMac DVSE. Both running 10.2.8 just fine, none of the problems I have seen reported have affected me. YMM(will?)V
If non-California residents (legal or illegal) find it interesting that almost all California government websites look similar, it is no coincidence. All webpages are supposed to be coded using Frontpage (even while the State Attorney General's Office was persuing the antitrust case with Microsoft)..
What does coding it in Front Page have to do with how it looks? Or were they forced to use a canned Front Page layout or template? That would be different, and just as bad as being forced to use a DreamWeaver canned template or anything else. Microsoft bashing for the sake of Microsoft bashing - while fun - is counter productive.

But what about giving us a simple html editor?
One of the greatest editors ever conceived. (IMO of course). SubEthaEdit

Not to mention finding a 802.11g card that is supported under Linux, and then installing it... Linux: PnHnCnSnR (Plug-n-Hack-n-Compile-n-Swear=n=Redo)

Is Bluetooth Dead?
No, it's just hiding on a remote tropical island with BSD...
cue drum: ba da bah!
Unless it's a really cool image for people with really low resolution monitors...
So did mine. And the re-install DVD contains 10.2.7 as well.
My guess is - no.

Is anyone keeping an archive of the variations of that troll? What is being used to create it?
It would be interesting to see all the variations. (I have seen fruits, pets, computers, and cars)...

Why not download the combo updater and burn a CD and mail it to her? Or if she lives close by you can go visit her, give her the CD and a big hug...
Your Dell mouse ate my term paper... And it was a really good term paper.
