  1. Why you should calibrate your monitors on FBI Conducts Raids Over Half-Life 2 Source Theft · · Score: 4, Interesting

The exact address is blacked out in these scans, but if you have your monitor calibrated properly, you can see the censored parts of page 3 shining through in page 2. Of course on uncalibrated monitors, which they presumably used to scan these documents, you only see white.

Another reason to calibrate your monitors before creating stuff that you publish :-)

That was a very simple explanation, thank you.

Could you tell me one thing, because I still don't understand this supersolid thing perfectly: If I had a cubic block of supersolid matter, and I would put it on a table... would it flow away or stay in cubic form?

I guess your example means that if somebody would blow a bit of air to one side of this cube, there would be "bubbles" forming that would move through, right? And if I would tap on one side, the shockwave of that tap would go through the whole cube like a little earthquake, right? Strange stuff indeed.

However, if you say that it would not stay in cubic form, then me as a layman would just say "well it might be solid for scientists, but for me it's liquid".

Hope you can reply on that one, thanks :-)

Actually, the problem is the lack of fine-control in most democracies. There are thousands of issues to decide, but as a voter, you can vote every 4 years and choose just one of 2 to 4 major parties.

The amount of choices translate very badly from the voter to the final decision.

And on the temporal part, a politician can tell A and the proceed doing B for 4 years without any possibility of intervention.

There are actually countries that have much more fine control (like Switzerland), but unfortunately most countries don't have.

I guess if the voters would be asked wheter they want more fine control, they said yes, but they don't have the control in the first place to make sure the question gets asked.

And this is actually perfect, because you wouldn't search for "London Hyatt" neither, but rather for "Hyatt London". It's the more natural thing to type in the product followed by some restrictions, and I think most people automatically search the same way.

Bottom line: The example is already squewed and doesn't prove a point at all.

A big part of the fun of movie entertainment is the surprise factor, that you don't know what is going to happen.

You seem like you want to compare the act of buying a movie ticket with the act of buying tennis shoes: You want to know everything beforehand. But with movies, this won't work.

Entertainment has been this way since Shakespeare: You pay first, you might be happy afterwards. The risk was always on the viewers side.

I suggest you relax a bit more. It's not like movies are very expensive, compared with the other things you pay at a night out (dinner, dance,...).

    Have fun!

The DRM layer is a bitch, though

Good point. I'm asking myself right now "Can a open standard include DRM without completely jeapardizing DRM"? I don't think so. Formats including DRM always have to be closed. If they are open, anybody can recreate the App that accesses the content but leave away any restrictions.

So, in short, the initiative to create "a open eBook standard", which presumes some DRM, is already dead in its tracks.

    Blinkenlights Reloaded
