ZigBee was never designed for streaming music or transferring files, so shockingly, it doesn't do that well. How many bytes do you need to open a window shade? X10??

Actually ZigBee was designed for interoperability. Check out ZigBee Application Layers:: http://ftp1.digi.com/support/documentation/90000976_C.pdf I think part of the problem with automated light switches is they're high liability and low volume. It burned down your house? oops sorry.

I have to agree with you about ZigBee. If you're into tinkering with electronics, you can get XBees for about $20 a pop http://www.digi.com/products/wireless/zigbee-mesh/xbee-zb-module.jsp I have used them for a few projects and found them to be very reliable, well documented and having a good support community. There's also a fair amount of open source software out there for interfacing with them. However if you want a commercial solution, it's Control4 and you're going to pay out the wazoo. It's too bad someone can't step up with a low cost alternative. The RF chip itself is under $10 in volume.

  9. my two cents on Which Phone To Develop For? · · Score: 1

iPhone and Android are different in that they provide a consistent, well designed interface on all phones (of course iphone is just one) and a online store to buy/download apps. These two facts lead to a superior user experience.

With Java/Windows you have carrier branded interfaces that are inconsistent and your app is not truly integrated into the phone software. Also all the JavaME apps I've seen are sluggish and the pain of using them exceeds their value. I had a windows mobile device for a year and it was anything but stable. My wife has a RIM curve that reboots and I know others who are frustrated with their windows mobile devices.

I think Android will be a hit. I understand it is very well designed, and all apps run as first class citizens. It should be relatively painless to port a JavaMe app to Android but I suspect they will have no shortage of excellent applications. And eventually we will see more phones.

  11. Not only are US goods cheaper for us.. on Software Price Gap Between the US and Europe · · Score: 1

In at least one case, we pay less for european goods, than europeans. I purchased a BMW last year for around 45K USD. That same car costs around 45K in euros for European buyers! While the dollar has continued to slide, the price has not increased, yet.

Also, I learned recently that european employees at a well known int'l consultancy make significantly less than their US counterparts, for the same job? What's going on here? Is europe haves and have-nots (i.e. lack of middle class)? I'm not a hater, just curious.
