Typically you end up using less bandwidth with AJAX because you are sending just the data and not the HTML. Not sure about the older computer argument as Outlook web (reportedly the first ajax app) always worked fine for me 5 or so years ago.
why I itunes or equivalent can't offer movie downloads? The already have the technology. I just want to download a movie (mpeg-4 is fine) and watch it once. I don't want a STB, Directv movie selection is abysmal, and netflix requires several days advance planning.
you can get a dell axim x51v for about the same price and it works pretty good. its display resolution is a bit smaller at 640x480, but it is also lighter and it supports ms office docs and windows media. install orb and you can watch tv over wifi.
X10 may have its issues but it has a ton of open source software. I might like to record events to a database, or send an IM when someone is at my front door. Is there an sdk for insteon? is it open? last I checked there wasn't.
Seeing a lot of X10 bashing here and rightly so. It is what it is - cheap and full of quirks. I use it to 1. turn my porch lights on in the evening and 2. record motion events (e.g. front door, garage etc..) I use a hacked up version of the excellent X10Controller http://sourceforge.net/projects/x10controller/ I find it quite reliable w.r.t. the motion events, but less so w/ the porch lights (maybe works about 80% of the time).. was better until I installed a UPS. To improve the reliability I simply send multiple on events. The light will eventually go on, maybe not exactly at dusk. I bought the smarthome phase coupler (plugs into dryer outlet) and solved the 2 phase problem, for the most part. So in short you just have to accept the reliability issues decide if you can live w/ something that works most of the time, or shell out the cash for something better.
would be a calculator that you could plug in gas price, miles driven per year, percentage city driving, cost differential between hybrid and gas model, etc. and get a cost analysis.
until you accidently reboot during a recording or install some software that breaks Sage - ask me how I know. You need a dedicated device to do it right. Typically PCs don't fall into that category and if they do they are an expensive tivo.
Here's my suggestion: get newspaper or magazine (with big letters preferrably), glue, scissors and some paper. Cut letters of liking, assemble and paste to paper. Oh and wear gloves.
'if downloading episodes over the Internet proves popular, analysts believe Apple will get permission to offer shows with better-fidelity pictures.
That's what it would take to get me interested since (live most geeks) I can already record stuff on my pvr/tivo at standard definition. Short of live events, I'd prefer this model for tv viewing. Maybe we'll see an apple set-top box.
what about when I stumble out of a bar or after a tough leg workout - will it still work? what if I get injured and really need to use the phone. ofcourse I didn't RTFA
I can see this being useful for hosting providers, such as mine that for security reasons do not allow access to the io.* package in.NET. Also nice for a consolodating log messages in a cluster/farm. For mission critical stuff, you can't beat a log file, unless maybe you run out of disk space.
run nstruts, nspring, nhibernate etc on tomcat. Seriously though, I applaud their effort from a wow-thats-kind-of-cool standpoint but I can't imagine anyone having a need for this.
when my laptop (running mandrake 9) crashed while I was attempting to give a presentation on the benefits of leveraging opensource technologies in our applications. Turns out it didn't like the video source being switched to a projector. Nonetheless talk about embarassing and no I'm not making this up. I'm a huge linux/opensource proponent but this story is just one-sided.

You can debug JSPs w/ any app server that preserves JSP servlet source files. In Eclipse you just add the folder of the jsp_servlet source files to the project source and debug as usual. I imagine you could do the same w/ Netbeans.
I like the idea of a pay service, but just want to point out that from a cost perspective, sagetv or beyondtv would be cheaper after about one year, (assumming you already have xp) since they don't charge for the guide service.
What I'd like to see is a company offer a point and click install for mythtv along w/ support. That is something I'd pay for.
can't one attach a micro drive to most pdas e.g. dell axim? I remember my boss had a microdrive on his hp jornada (?).. this was about 5 years ago and it was only 350mb, but same idea.

great. any suggestions for equipment/providers?
a side effect is that they will scratch your eyes out while you're sleeping.

hit you in the ass on the way out
doesn't it come standard w/ just about any computer? I looked into building a PC, but the dell deals where much cheaper + comes w/ xp.

so basically I can thwart this "weapon" w/ some heavy duty ear plugs?

Fyi, the PST software is proprietary Motorola and is not free by any definition and I don't think a consumer could even legally buy it.
