Linux, on the other hand, is a random helter-skelter mess of half-implemented and incompatible software systems that's lucky to run at all much less be intuitive to the user.
Please explain all the many people in the world (corpations and individuals) that have managed to get it running? You telling me all these people have got the luck of the irish or do you just have the brains of a blonde polish pop-star? (sorry to all the blond polish orck stars).
>You know, I'd just be happy with documentation on par with the FreeBSD Handbook. Seriously. I picked up a copy years ago (BSD 4.4 >I believe) and it covered just about everything you'd ever need to know to get started and was extremely well-written.

that people (linux users) would have not known about How-to's. Makes me wonder if they are also unfamilar with other means of getting thier linux questions answered. So here goes:
Get some questions answered in "real-time" on IRC, connect to any Visit Freenode Server! and join channels like: #linuxhelp, #Gentoo, #xf86, #security, #Debian, #etc....etc...etc...
So they change the Name of the company and the website, but forgot to rename Gator(R) eWallet !
Yeah, cause I'd trust these folks with any of my financial info.
Why is it so great to put MIT on your resume? I can think of a 100 different place I would rather at before the MIT NOC. Seriously what does MIT do at their NOC that makes it so special. Hell I could use those tools at home on my linksys router, save the Cisco Netflow stuff.
Kretchmar is a network engineer for MIT and has gotten a lot of practical experience in managing large networks and unruly hosts.
I'd say, we all know how MIT loves its pranks/hacks. This has to be one intersting and challenging job. Someone should publish a book (or just a website) on the pranks/hacks that happens on their network. For the most part the other pranks are all well documented, bu I'd love to see what these kids cook up for the New Admin.
I can just picture a bunch of pimply faced geeks with thick glasses joining the military to use super cool linux gadget.
The US Armed Forces has been activley recruiting "pimply faced geeks with thick glasses" for....well since forever.
My personal favortive was seening them setup shop at DEFCON. The CIA and FBI were also on hand doing a little recriuting. I'm sure they were also there in a differnt capacity.
I'm sure there will be "experts" for the other side saying otherwise. I would have loved for him to back this up with some datea. Not that I (or most of the/. crowd need that).
I guess ARMY $$$ should be enough "data" for others.
The website redesign won't make Mozilla more successful. Advertising is what's needed, plain and simple. How the site looks won't affect people's awareness of Mozilla, advertising will.
Making the site UI more streamlined does make sense though.
Its all part of a joint effort. They are not just re-doing the website for shits-&-giggles. Its all an effort to look more "professional" as they offer new services.
Absolutely parents should be the key to general surfing. However, in looking for information relating to a book report can find porn, uncensored and in many cases, with no warning whatsoever by clicking a seemingly innocuous link (www.whitehouse.com etc.) It's illegal for a 711 to allow children access to adult magazines, and that's done using the reasonable method of looking at the apparent age of the person. Why should web sites be immune to reasonable standards as well?
I don't think anyone would disagree with you there, however it is the execution of these standards that is in question. Who is there to just "look" at everyone who surfs up to a site and eyeball wheather the person is old enough or not?
for at least a few people that are unemployed in the area. 130,000 Laptops, means more than a few people to roll them out, support them, etc. Hope this deal doesn't fall through. Also it means that sooner or later other states will follow suit. I don't think this is the answer to the problem with education in the US, but its a step in a "good" direction.
so/. must have been hacked. Or everyone is on vacation and the monkeys are running the show. Everyone thought they would come up with Hamlet but it appears they instead wrote a story on/.

So on this the 10th anniversary of the How-to, here is a little "up-yours-clippy" :)~
This one works... !

Well I would have followed the stories but I read /. and they NEVER post anything.....
Who the hell am I kidding. I've changed my /. bookmark to read "Slashdot, News for Nerds. SCO Matters!"
Thousands of geeks *already* inside your network

Your lost of vision will be a direct result of those lonely friday nights you spend dreaming of beowulf clusters while handle the ol' 'joy stick'.
Ahhhhh, sweet revenge.
I can install gentoo in less than 2 days. 'Course I'll never be able to afford one, but one can dream.
Don't foeget, its one more thing they can budle with their PC sales. Much like they do with printers and cameras.
Therer are lots of people that enjoy getting all their accesories in one place. Makes them feel like they are:
A: Getting a deal
B: Can get support from one company.

Would give a whole new meaning to the president getting "a little head"!

Some form of a "HTTP Bittoernt" would stop the /. effect on the little guys. Everyone who views it gets to serve it.

Wasn't it: " We'll spy on *them* as they spy on us"?

Don't forget the hairy palm syndrome.
