Why do you think books use serif fonts? Because they are faster and easier to read.

Yes, but print is different from screens because it has a much higher resolution. In a high resolution medium (print) serifs help readability; in a low resolution medium (most computer screens) the added complexity of serifs hinders readability.

See e.g. Use sans-serif face for all body copy or HTML E-Mail: Text Font Readability Study and form your own opinion.

Hmm, the article got the cost of Opera wrong, too. Opera is completely free, it is just that the free version is ad supported. I don't understand why people are so turned off by this, it's not as if you're web browsing experience isn't overcome with advertising, anyway.

It is a while ago since I tried Opera, but as I remember it the Opera ads were animated and there was no way to turn the animation off ('don't animate animated gifs' settings for web pages didn't seem to have an effect on those ads).

  17. Apache on OpenBSD on OpenBSD 3.6 Live · · Score: 5, Informative

Apache on OpenBSD always had a lot of security-related patches compared to the regular Apache (chroot for example), but it seems that Apache on OpenBSD can now be considered a real fork:

After the 1.3.29 they decided to muck with their license, introducing stupid patent terms without understanding what they turned their license (that used to be a BSD-derived one) into with that, so we cannot import new versions unless they fix their license. It is not a big loss tho'. The Apache people have mostly given up on 1.3 anyway, and all that happened over the last years was bug fixes, documention work (actually, mainly translation), and some stupid code shuffling, that only made diffs bigger without improving anything. Now that it is certain that we don't have to worry about syncing to them any more, we can start making the mess of code readable tho'.
