This, along with the zealots who recommend debian to everyone (newbies included), is why debian will fail. No one is interested in doing what it takes to make things interoperate well out of the box. Every debian 'expert' has hundreds of workarounds dancing in their heads. A system like this doesn't scale.

I'm not familiar with OpenOffice development, but a big question in my mind is if Mozilla can interoperate with anyone.

I think the evidence clearly suggests NOT.

For instance, take look at this bug:

    http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1644 40
(you'll have to cut and paste it into a new window because bugzilla doesn't allow links from slashdot)

Asa, a highly regarded mozilla member, goes apeshit on a well reasoned suggestion for change. Worse yet, Asa doesn't even provide a good argument against the bug! When mozilla bigshots have this hostile attitude, well meaning people are bound to give mozilla the middle finger and take their skills elsewhere.

  24. Production tools on Apple Sues Sorenson Over QuickTime Codec · · Score: 2, Interesting

Apple is hurting themselves in the production tools market by not having a linux player. I'm in a position where I recommend technology. I'm also a linux user. I'm fully aware that some movie formats will play on linux (MPEG/DIVX/Real) while others (Windows media, Quicktime) will not. I don't really care much of the reason why apple and microsoft don't release native linux players. The bottom line is that they are NOT there. So of course, I will be recommending against the QT and WMF technology in favor of something that WILL run on linux.
