  1. Dropping the Tungsten and Zire names on Palm T|X and Z22 Reviewed · · Score: 1

Am I the only one who does not like Palm dropping the Tungsten and Zire names in favor of the T and Z prefixes? To new users unfamiliar with Palm, it would probably be seen as useless letters in front of a useless number that adds confusion as to what the letters stand for.

This seems to be something HP has done with the iPaqs, with their endless amount of models. Just from looking at their site, they have an h, hx, rx, and rz prefix, which is then followed by a series of 4 numbers. These numbers and prefixes mean nothing to me, since I am not an iPaq user, but I am assuming that the higher the number, the more features it has.

  2. From prior experience on LAN Party at a High School? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I atttended a LAN party at our crosstown rival's high school once, so I feel obliged to share my experience.

LAN parties at schools are risky because they are government buildings and you're basically leaching off their supplies and resources. Take for granted what you are offered. The whole trick to getting our LAN party off the ground was that the person who organized it had a friendly relationship with the head of technology at the school. You state that you're in a technology group, so that's a start. If it's a school sponsored group, that's even better.

If administration gives you the go-ahead, the next step might be sponsorship from a faculty member. School administration will probably be hesitent about a bunch of high school kids in the building after hours, so a faculty member with them to look after them will usually calm their nerves. If your group is sponsored, the leader of your group might be a good choice.

Chances are you'll want to bring your own computers because school computers are generally locked down and don't have the horsepower for games. If you're placed in a room that has Ethernet jacks, you might be tempted to just plug all the computers into that. I thought about doing that at ours, but I just plugged one cable into a wall jack for uplink to the Internet.

For network topology, we just had a hub and everyone plugged into that, and then we had one cable plugged into a wall port providing Ethernet. I don't think we told anyone about the uplink, but it worked fine.

We played WarCraft III the entire night because we were asked not to play violent games (Quake III and the like). Getting people to attend can be a challenge, but post flyers and tell your friends. Depending on who you hang out with, you may or may not draw a croud. In our case, we had about 10 people show up.

    >OOPS, PALM.

For those on the go, Frobnitz is a Z-Code machine for Palm Pilots, but I've found it has some weird display kinks. One really nice feature, though, is that you can extended-click a word on the screen and get a pop-up menu of common commands like Take, Examine, and so on, all pre-selected with the word in mind. It takes longer to explain than to learn how to use.

For those of us with a PalmOS device with OS 4.0 or later, I suggest trying CliFrotz from Sourceforge. It supports the high resolution displays often found on the Clies and the Tungstens. It's based on the Frotz core and supports V6 graphics. Nice.

If you know someone's screen name offhand, you can press the Instant Message button or whatever it's called and it'll prompt you for your buddy's screen name and then let you type in your message.

AIM for Palm OS is still available for free on AOL's UK site. I downloaded it today and installed it. It works, but it did not load my buddy list.

  6. Nintendo Products on What's the Hardiest Hardware You've Seen? · · Score: 1

Back in the days when Nintendo Power was in its prime, readers wrote in all sorts of stories where their Nintendo products got "tortured".

These concisted of their GameBoys getting dropped repeatedly, a GameBoy cartridge getting flushed down the toilet, SuperNES systems being caught up in house fires but still performed perfectly, etc.

I don't know if their products are still that tough as I have never had a bad experience with my stuff, but they are very strong

  7. Tubs on Game Console Organization? · · Score: 1

I don't really have an answer to stuff going into the TV, but we have our stuff organized (or at least we try to) into tubs that we have in a closet near our TV.

Our TV has 3 RCA style inputs so we use two of those for the GameCube and PS2. The GameCube port thingy is comparable with the N64 and SNES if we ever feel the need to play it. Our TV is on a rach/shelf that has our VCR and LaserDisc player (yeah!) Underneath we have a shelf where we can stuff stuff like controllers and games.

Our TV has an Svideo input but we don't use it cuz we don't have the cables, and I don't really think I need it. If I'd get one I'd probably get one for the GameCube because I play that more and I don't really care about the DVD quality on the PS2 because I don't play DVDs on it, plus the PS2 is my brother's and I don't think he knows what Svideo is, so he doesn't really care :).

Our games are then usually just lying around on the floor. My brother keeps his games all on the carpet because that's usually where he hangs out. My SNES and N64 games are in our closet and my PSX, PS2 and GCN games are on a DVD rack in my bedroom, along with any memory cards.

My mom has tried to organize all our junk (which resulted in the tubs), but it's kind of failed since we're too lazy to put stuff back in the tubs.

  8. Growing up on Top Ten Dying Game Genres · · Score: 5, Insightful

All of these genres seem like something that a young kid in the 80's grew up to. As the technology has advanced, so have the games. I mean you don't see any text based adventures anymore except with MUDs. The same with educational games. Many are still made but as we get older we tend not to play them anymore and therefore pay little attention to them.

I would have to agree with the puzzle genre dying. No one wants to slap down $50 when you can play the same game online for free. A puzzle game has to be more complex and have more detail than just moving blocks in order for me to buy it. I personally bought Pikmin and I loved it but I don't play it that often anymore.

This reminds me of the original GameBoys. When I subscribed to Nintendo Power, people would write in about their experience with their GameBoys and how it got destroyed, etc. Every time, they said that even after it got run over by a car, thrown out a window, etc, it still worked.

Yeah from what I've heard LCDs are not very good for fast games such as FPS because the liquid crystals can't "turn on or off" as fast as a CRT can. Until they get better for gaming and the prices for a 17-19" LCD come down, I probably won't be getting one.

Of course, I may be totally wrong :(
